2017 Hispanic Heritage Month

On behalf of the City of Hamilton and Council, it my great pleasure to offer congratulations to the Fraternity Hispanic Association as they celebrate the 2017 Hispanic Heritage Month during the month of October. Immigration is the life blood of Hamilton. Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate and educate our community on the great contributions made by the Hispanic culture and language to our city. It is an opportunity to talk about the immigrant story and its place within the history of the City of Hamilton. Hamilton is richer for its Hispanic Heritage. The impact of the Hispanic culture is found around us and across our city. Together let’s celebrate 2017 Hispanic Heritage Month.

  September 1, 2017 Dear friends, On behalf of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, I am pleased to offer best wishes to our many friends and supporters in the Hispanic community on the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated this October in Hamilton. This month is a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the Hispanic culture and heritage as reflected by the many art, music and food exhibits on display throughout the month of October, but to celebrate the many and significant contributions of Canadian Hispanics to the fabric of our community and country. Many of these contributions are commemorated in an art mural commissioned by the Fraternity Hispanic Association in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. The mural, located on the exterior wall of our St. Charles Adult Education Centre, chronicles the “Journey of Hope” that countless newcomers – including many from Hispanic backgrounds – have made to our welcoming land over the past century, and their work to build this country into the rich cultural and diverse nation that it is today. The official unveiling of the mural is one of the many activities planned for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Another activity will recognize the academic achievements of our local Hispanic youth. Through the generous support of local businesses and individuals, many of our high achieving students will be recognized with a José Eduardo López Memorial Scholarship. The hope is that they, like the award’s namesake, will use their special talents and gifts to make this community a better and more just place. In closing, I would like to extend a special thank you to the organizers for their work and dedication in planning this year’s event. Most particularly, I wish to thank members of the Hispanic Fraternity Association with whom our Catholic school board has partnered over the past many years in providing educational programs for learners of all ages. Together, we continue to provide invaluable opportunities for all Hamiltonians to enjoy and participate in the life of our community. Enjoy your celebrations.

Una madre y una hija luchan contra el Alzheimer en un país en guerra Este 24 de septiembre regresa Aluna Theatre a Hamilton con la lectura teatral en español de la premiada obra “Madre”, por la dramaturga y directora Beatriz Pizano. Madre cuenta la historia de Julia, una mujer colombiana en sus setenta, que sufre de alzhéimer, y de su hija, Ángela, que vive en Canadá. Es una historia que honra la vida de esta mujer real, y explora su descenso en el complejo mundo de su enfermedad. Ángela, como muchos de nosotros inmigrantes, tiene la dura lucha de ayudar a su madre desde otro país. Es una bella y emotiva historia sobre una madre y una hija, y cómo en medio de un momento tan difícil en la vida se vuelven a encontrar y amar. Guilt. Memory. A mother and daughter contend with Alzheimer´s in a country at war. Aluna Theatre returns to Hamilton on September 24th, with a reading, in Spanish, of the award-winning play Madre, by playwright and director Beatriz Pizano. Madre tells the story of Julia, a Colombian woman in her seventies, suffering from Alzheimer´s disease, and her daughter, Ángela, who lives in Canada. It´s a story that honors the life of this real woman, and explores the descent into the complex world of her sickness. Ángela, like many of us immigrants, lives the harsh struggle of helping her mother from another country. It´s a beautiful and emotional story about a mother and a daughter, and about how, in the middle of a difficult moment in life, they find and love each other again.

“Door of the Wind” Establecido el 1 de julio de 1991, el Grupo Ecuatoriano Etnocultural Huairapungo de Ontario, nace con el propósito de mantener y promover las raíces sociales, culturales y artísticas de Ecuador. Huairapungo es una palabra quechua que significa “Puerta del Viento”. Uno de los grupos más representativos de Casa Cultural Mexicana es The Mexicans Folk Ballet, una compañía de danza sin fines de lucro establecida en Toronto, creada con el objetivo de compartir y difundir las raíces culturales de México a través de actuaciones de danza basadas en el dinamismo y la estética de la Mexicana folklore One of the most representative groups of Casa Cultural Mexicana is The Mexicans Folk Ballet, a non profit dance company established in Toronto, created with the aim of sharing and spreading the cultural roots of Mexico through dance performances based in the dynamism and aesthetics of the Mexican folklore.

Journey of Hope Mural

land in Canada are a call of immigration to this large country, where the polar bear and goose are inviting to settle in these lands. The polar bear has high cultural and economic importance to the Inuit: it is wise, powerful, and similar to humans. They live in icy and snowy conditions, a presentation of the climate to be adapted. The Canada goose has a curious nobility: it is intelligent, loyal, brave, and hard to intimidate. Also, the Canada goose is recognized for its highly social nature, common value for fellowship, family and community; those very qualities that define us and our face to the rest of the world. The maple leaves, a symbol of Canada, which gives us a palette of vibrant colors during the year, cheerfully inviting all nature lovers to carry out outdoor activities. One of the leaves shows an Inuksuk, a human made stone landmark used by people of the Arctic region. It is a navigation tool as a point of reference, and depicts an open invitation for newcomers

Pamela Rojas The Canada 150 Art Mural “Journey of Hope” was sponsored by the Fraternity Hispanic Association with the support of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and funded by the Government of Canada and City of Hamilton. The Mural is displayed on the external wall at St Charles School East 5th Street, Hamilton, was created in in honour of Canada’s 150th Anniversary and in recognition of the many and significant contributions by newcomer Canadians to Hamilton’s diverse and multicultural community. Artist and muralist Pamela Rojas with the assistance of more than 60 volunteers worked on this mural that depicts the process of adapting to a new country from the struggle and heartache that immigrants experience in leaving their homeland to the excitement and joy

to find their way to settlement in Canada. The Settlement It is a tribute to those who have worked for decades in making it possible to develop a multicultural and diverse country, with its private sponsorship, church sponsorship, and government assisted refugee program. Their faces are represented in different colors. There is no a race, nor a dominant gender, but a mix of races and cultures; one of the biggest sources of Canadian pride. They all appear knitting and weaving because it is a great task to weave a great system that invites to settle in this great land. The bottom part of the mural shows books, in English and French to remind us that we are a bilingual country, and most of all, to remind us to be open to learn Canada’s official languages. The Departure Every beginning is a farewell to the past. Emigrating is leaving behind your country, family, friends, neighborhood, and familiar smells. The motives can vary, but its essence is a mixture of grief, sadness, joy, hope, and fear. The people in blue represent this state. The hot air balloons represent the beginning of the often unexpected journey that can take you to a new, unknown land. The sun symbolizes the hope of a new beginning: a new dawn, facing change with rays of optimism. The Invitation Snowy mountains and large tracts of

The sky in the mural’s design has a blueish and purple tinge, and connects the three sections of the mural as the common factor we all share in this world. The sky and its palette of colors, reminds us of our sky in our old countries. The purple color affects us physically, soothes our minds and offers spirituality and encourages creativity. El Mural de Arte de Canadá 150 “Viaje de la Esperanza” fue patrocinado por la Asociación Fraternidad Hispana con el apoyo de la Junta Escolar del Distrito Católico de HamiltonWentworth y financiada por el Gobierno de Canadá y la Ciudad de Hamilton. El Mural se muestra en el muro externo de la Escuela St. Charles, en la calle East 5th, Hamilton, en honor al 150 aniversario de Canadá y en reconocimiento a las numerosas y significativas contribuciones de los recién llegados canadienses a la diversa y multicultural comunidad de Hamilton. La artista y muralista Pamela Rojas con la

asistencia de más de 60 voluntarios trabajó en este mural que representa el proceso de adaptación a un nuevo país de la lucha y la angustia que experimentan los inmigrantes al dejar su patria a la emoción y alegría de comenzar una nueva vida en una tierra nueva y acogedora, Viaje de la Esperanza MURAL: La historia El mural está dividido en 3 secciones: la salida, la invitación y el asentamiento. La salida Cada comienzo es un adiós al pasado. Emigrar es dejar atrás su país, familia, amigos, barrio, y olores familiares. Los motivos pueden variar, pero su esencia es una mezcla de dolor, tristeza, alegría, esperanza y miedo. La gente en azul representa este estado. Los globos de aire caliente representan el comienzo del viaje a menudo inesperado que puede llevarle a una tierra nueva, desconocida. El sol simboliza la esperanza de un nuevo comienzo: un nuevo amanecer, frente al cambio con los rayos de optimismo. La invitación Montañas nevadas y grandes extensiones de tierra en Canadá son un llamado de inmigración a este gran país, donde el oso

polar y el ganso están invitando a establecerse en estas tierras. El oso polar tiene una gran importancia cultural y económica para los Inuit: es sabio, poderoso y similar a los humanos. Viven en condiciones heladas y nevadas, una presentación del clima a adaptarse. El ganso de Canadá tiene una nobleza curiosa: es inteligente, leal, valiente y difícil de intimidar. Además, el ganso de Canadá es reconocido por su naturaleza altamente social, valor común para el compañerismo, la familia y la comunidad; esas mismas cualidades que nos definen y que es nuestra cara frente al resto del mundo. Las hojas de arce, un símbolo de Canadá, que nos da una paleta de colores vibrantes durante el año, alegremente invitando a todos los amantes de la naturaleza para llevar a cabo actividades al aire libre. Una de las hojas muestra un Inuksuk, un hito humano piedra hito utilizado por la gente de la región ártica. Es una herramienta de navegación como punto de referencia, y representa una invitación abierta para que los recién llegados encuentren su camino hacia el asentamiento en Canadá. El asentamiento Es un homenaje a quienes han trabajado durante décadas en el desarrollo de un país

multicultural y diverso, con su patrocinio privado, patrocinio de iglesias y programa de refugiados asistidos por el gobierno. Sus caras están representadas en diferentes colores. No hay una raza, ni un género dominante, sino una mezcla de razas y culturas; una de las mayores fuentes de orgullo canadiense. Todos aparecen tricotando y tejiendo porque es una gran tarea para tejer un gran sistema que invita a asentarse en esta gran tierra. La parte inferior del mural muestra libros, en inglés y francés, para recordarnos que somos un país bilingüe y, sobre todo, para recordarnos que estamos abiertos a aprender los idiomas oficiales de Canadá. Los recién llegados de diferentes edades se inscriben en las escuelas ESL LINC y navegan a través de la experiencia de aprender un nuevo idioma. El cielo en el diseño del mural tiene un tinte azulado y púrpura, y conecta las tres secciones del mural como el factor común que todos compartimos en este mundo. El cielo y su paleta de colores, nos recuerda nuestro cielo en nuestros países antiguos. El color púrpura nos afecta físicamente, calma nuestras mentes, ofrece espiritualidad y fomenta la creatividad.

Pamela Rojas nació en Santiago, Chile. Se trasladó a España en 1995 y estudió en la prestigiosa escuela de cerámica Della Robbia en Sevilla, donde terminó la especialidad de escultura y modelado en cerámica. En 1996 se convirtió en la asistente muralista de la muralista española Ximena Ahumada y durante algunos años pintaron murales alrededor de la ciudad con un grupo de mujeres que necesitaban apoyo social e integración comunitaria.

PAMELA ROJAS

Pamela Rojas was born in Santiago, Chile. She moved in 1995 to Spain and studied in the prestigious ceramic school Della Robbia in Seville, where she finished the specialty of sculpture and modeling in ceramic. In 1996, she became the muralist assistant to the Spanish muralist Ximena Ahumada and for a few years they painted murals around the city with a group of women in need of social support and community integration.

Eddyth Gaviria nacida en Medellín –Colombia. Desde niña descubrió su talento para el arte y desde ese momento empezó a tomar clases de dibujo. Al finalizar su high school decidió estudiar publicidad enfocándose en el área de ilustración. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos tuvo la oportunidad de pintar varios murales para decorar interiores. Desde que llegó a Canadá en el 2008 decidió tomar clases de realismo en pastel y fue así como empezó a pintar varias de sus obras utilizando tanto pastel como acrílico, su estilo es realismo.

Eddyth Gaviria was born in Medellín -Colombia. As a little girl she discovered her talent for art and from that moment began to take classes in drawing. At the end of her high school career she decided to study advertising, focusing on the area of Illustration. Upon arriving in the United States, she had the opportunity to paint several murals as interior decorations. Since arriving to Canada in 2008, she decided to take classes in pastel realism and this is how she began to paint several of her realism works using both pastel and acrylic.

La Villa Goods es un emprendimiento social que trabaja con artesanos en El Salvador creando productos únicos y de alta calidad, que son elaborados éticamente, asegurando el pago justo de los artesanos, promoviendo la equidad de género, el desarrollo sostenible y el respeto al medio ambiente. La marca, cuya fundadora es una diseñadora salvadoreña, pretende conectar los productos artesanales con mercados internacionales, creando un impacto social positivo en El Salvador.

Los textiles, que son hechos a mano en telar tradicional de palanca rescatando y dando valor a la herencia cultural de la tejeduría en El Salvador, creando productos como: bufandas, colchas, toallas, manteles, individuales y servilletas. Se trabaja directamente con los talleres y de la mano con maestros artesanos innovando y cuidando cada detalle, desde los materiales hasta los acabados. La joyería y bisutería utiliza el coco como materia prima ecológica y local, mezclándola

con plata, enchape de oro de 14K, metales base, hilos y piedras naturales. Las piezas son elaboradas en asociación con Artesanos Callotl, una iniciativa económica para las comunidades locales, parte de un proyecto de conservación de tortugas marinas y desarrollo sostenible en la Costa del Sol, El Salvador. Pueden encontrar los productos en pop-up shops locales, el Hamilton Art Crawl and Mercado Navideño.

The brand, whose founder is a Salvadoran designer, aims to connect hand-made products with international markets, while creating a positive social impact in El Salvador. The textiles are handcrafted on traditional foot looms,

conserving and giving value to the cultural heritage of weaving in El Salvador, creating products such as: scarves, blankets, towels, tablecloths, placemats and napkins. Working directly with the workshops and hand in hand with master craftsmen, La Villa curates and innovates whilst taking care of every detail, from materials to finishes. The jewellery line uses coconut shell as an ecological and local raw material, mixed with silver, 14K gold plating, base

metals and natural stones. The pieces are made in partnership with Callotl Artisans, an economic initiative for local communities, part of a sea turtle conservation and sustainable development project in Costa del Sol, El Salvador. El coro de niñas de la AFH “Nuestras Voces” se inició varios años atrás. Sin embargo este año y bajo la dirección de Julia Clarke Isla, ha hecho un trabajo digno de destacar. Con solo una hora de práctica, el coro ha logrado hacer dos grabaciones en YouTube, siete presentaciones, ocho canciones en su repertorio y la participación en una competencia en Toronto dejando tan buena impresión en la audiencia que fueron invitadas especiales de Silvia Méndez para una entrevista de una hora con la radio Latina de Toronto. Para la competencia se trabajó con un grupo de catorce niñas de 6 a 12 años, con una preparación exigente en la que se contó con el compromiso incondicional de los padres. Las niñas han dado lo mejor de sí mismas, actuando con mucho profesionalismo a pesar de su temprana edad. AFH está orgullosa de tener un programa que cuenta con estudiantes y padres motivados, directora y coordinadora que han hecho un trabajo excepcional y han fomentado un excelente trabajo de equipo. Este programa no solo permite a las niñas cantar en un coro sino también practicar español, aumentar su autoestima, y reforzar la importancia de la colaboración, responsabilidad, y amor a las tradiciones hispanoamericanas. ¡FELICITACIONES!

The AFH Girls’ Choir “Our Voices” began their practices several years ago. However this year and under the direction of Julia Clarke Isla, has done a work worthy of note. With only one hour of practice, the choir has managed to make two recordings on YouTube, seven presentations, eight songs in its repertoire and a competition in Toronto leaving such a good impression in the audience that they were invited by Silvia Méndez for a one hour interview with the Latin radio of Toronto. For the competition, a group of fourteen girls from 6 to 12 years went through an intense and demanding preparation in which they had the unconditional commitment of their parents. The girls have done their best, acting very professionally despite their young age. AFH is proud to have a program with motivated students and parents, an excellent choir director and coordinator who have done exceptional work and have fostered superb teamwork. This program not only allows girls to sing in a choir but also helps them practicing Spanish, increasing their self-esteem, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, responsibility, and love for Hispanic American traditions. CONGRATULATIONS!

Its large territory that span from sea to sea to sea present with natural geologic challenges such as the Rocky Mountains, Arctic tundra, large lakes, extended plains and roughed costs. Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world. Its diverse and demanding climate that has challenged settlers’ ingenuity to overcame its extremes temperatures, extended winters, humidityplagued summers. Mirando hacia el futuro En la celebración de los 150 años de Canadá, hemos querido reflexionar sobre la contribución que jóvenes y nuevos inmigrantes hacen a este país. Dos jóvenes con raices hispanas comparten sus deseos de progresar y contribuir a Canadá, reprensentando el pensamiento de muchos jóvenes e inmigrantes hispanos

JULIA ELENA CLARKE ISLA

Julia Elena Clarke Isla nació en Hamilton. Actualmente ha sido aceptada para estudiar en la Universidad Mc Master lo que es su pasión, música. Julia, hija de madre chilena y padre canadiense, tuvo desde niña una relación muy cercana con miembros de la comunidad hispana y a temprana edad empezó a cantar como voluntaria en eventos y actividades de la Asociación Fraternidad Hispana (AFH). Las excelentes interpretaciones del himno a Canadá que hizo en inauguraciones de actividades de AFH y en su escuela le dio la experiencia suficiente para ser seleccionada para cantar el himno en su graduación en el Hamilton Convention Centre. Julia ha participado en diferentes competencias con el conservatorio de música de Ontario y producciones musicales. Además de sus habilidades

musicales que son excepcionales, Julia es reconocida por su gentileza, jovialidad y por estar siempre dispuesta a compartir su talento como voluntaria en beneficio de la comunidad. Ella empezó a cantar con el que hoy es el coro nuestras voces cuando fue formado el año 2005 y fue parte de este ininterrumpidamente hasta enero de este año que le ofrecieron hacerse cargo como directora del coro, lo cual ella lo considera un honor. Julia ha demostrado liderazgo y dedicación, compartiendo su conocimiento y convirtiéndose en modelo para las integrantes del coro. Julia tiene rendido el séptimo grado de conservatorio en piano y el 6 año de canto; Ella sigue participando como voluntaria de AFH, Iglesia All Souls y Centro de Sante Communautaire de Hamilton y está feliz de ser parte de esta comunidad Latina. Julia Elena has rendered the seventh degree of conservatory in piano, and the 6th year of singing; remains an AFH volunteer in all its activities, the All Souls Church giving retreats and the Sante Communautaire Center in Hamilton and is happy to be part of this hispanic community.

Looking into the future During Canada’s 150th celebration, we have wanted to reflect the contribution by youth and new immigrants in our community. Two young women with Hispanic roots share their desire to progress and contribute to Canada, representing the dreams of many young people and hispanic immigrants.

ANA MARÍA TRIANA

Soy Ana María Triana, llegue a Hamilton, Ontario en el año 2013 desde Colombia. Desde que llegué a Canadá, me di cuenta que es un país de oportunidades, donde los sueños se convierten en planes del futuro. Llegué a aprender inglés y con perseverancia, avancé rápido y finalmente empecé a estudiar mercadeo en el 2015. Este verano participé en un programa del gobierno llamado My Explore donde personas de todas las provincias tienen la oportunidad de aprender una segunda lengua (Ingles/francés). Estuve en Quebec por un mes y medio y la experiencia fue muy enriquecedora. No solo aprendí bases de francés, si no que también conocí una cultura nueva y personas maravillosas de muchas partes de Canadá. Esta experiencia me edificó mucho como persona, aprendí de los demás, fortalecí muchas debilidades, conocí otras facetas de mi misma y aprendí a dar mas valor a las cosas simples que tenemos. Me sentí muy afortunada de haber participado, pues este programa incluye la estadía, la comida, los materiales y el curso como tal. Después de esto, tuve la oportunidad de viajar a British

Columbia con el grupo de mi iglesia. Fue una experiencia hermosa, pues este lugar tiene muchos parques naturales con montaňas y lagos. Al final del verano pienso que todo esto es posible gracias a Dios, quien ha encaminado todo (tiempo, dinero y salud) para poder realizar todo eso. También gracias a el trabajo y al esfuerzo que he realizado desde que llegué a este país. Canadá es uno de los países con mas oportunidad para los inmigrantes. Tenemos que saberlas apreciar y aprovechar, ser sabios y tener en cuenta que primero se trabaja duro para después tener una recompensa. Y trabajo no siempre significa un sueldo, el trabajo también es hacia la comunidad, a estos que necesitan de nuestro tiempo. Aunque no se vea recompensado monetariamente, Dios y la vida lo devuelven en salud, trabajo, tiempo y oportunidades para disfrutar este mundo sin límites. Porque si vale la pena soñar y trabajar por lo que queremos pues las oportunidades las hacemos nosotros mismos. I am Ana Maria Triana, I arrived to Hamilton, Ontario in 2013 from Colombia. Since I came to Canada, I realized that it is a country of opportunities, where dreams are realized and become plans for the future. I learned English with perseverance, fast enough to start the marketing program in 2015. This summer I participated in a government program called My Explore where people from all provinces have the opportunity to learn a second language

(English / French). I was in Quebec for a month and a half, the experience was very enriching. Not only did I learn the basics of French, but I also got to know a new culture and wonderful people from many parts of Canada. This experience helped me to learn from others, strengthen many weaknesses, get to know other facets of myself and learn to give more value to the simple things we have. I felt very fortunate to go as this program includes accommodation, food, the materials and the course. After this, I had the opportunity to travel to British Columbia with my church. It was a beautiful experience, as this province has many natural parks with mountains and lakes. Currently, at the end of the summer, I think all this was achievable with thanks to God, who has made everything possible, (time, money and health) and to the work and effort I have made to move forward since arriving to the country. Canada is one of the countries with the most opportunities for immigrants. We have to learn how to appreciate and take advantage of these while being wise and keeping in mind that first, we must work hard to receive any reward. Work does not always mean receiving a salary, work is also giving back to our community, to those who need our time. Although this reward isn’t monetary, God and life return it back to us through health, work, time and other opportunities to enjoy this world without limits… because it is worth dreaming and working for what we want.

Reconociendo a nue stra gente MARTHA RIVERA Mi nombre es Martha Rivera y soy de Colombia; llegué a Canadá el 13 de Diciembre de 2004, con una mezcla de sentimientos; triste y entusiasmada. Triste por dejar a mi familia, mis costumbres, un país que me vio crecer y me dio mi identidad. Pero muy entusiasmada por tener una oportunidad de hacer parte de este hermoso país. Mis conocimientos acerca de este país eran muy limitados básicamente dirigido a su clima. El primer encuentro con la nieve fue una experiencia única y empecé a ver que el frio sería parte de mi vida si decidía quedarme en Canadá, con el conocimiento de que tenía que tomar el reto para tener una mejor calidad de vida. La meta fue aprender el inglés lo que más pudiera ya que soy comunicadora social; Hablar, socializar y trabajar con gente son mis pasiones; para seguir de alguna manera mi profesión necesitaba comunicarme. Por supuesto he tenido altos y bajos en todo sentido, pero pienso que Dios tiene un plan para todos y que si las cosas están mal no las debemos hacer peor; así que he tomado lo positivo de cada situación inesperada. Durante casi 13 años de vivir en Hamilton, mi amor y respeto por este país día a día es más grande me dio la oportunidad de ser mamá de un niño quien es mi compañero de vida, he tenido la oportunidad de conocer excelentes amigos que se han convertido en mi familia y la oportunidad de trabajar y de educarme, desarrollando habilidades que desconocía que tenía. El pasado Junio me gradué como trabajadora de servicios sociales y aspiro siempre como profesional y

My name is Martha Rivera, I am from Colombia and I arrived in Canada on December 13th, 2004. I came with a mix of feelings, both sad and excited. I was sad because I left behind my family, my customs, and my country which gave me my identity. However, I was excited because it was a very great opportunity to be a part of a wonderful country. My knowledge about Canada was very limited, basically only related to the weather. The first time I saw the snow was amazing and I understood that cold weather will be a part of my life if I decided to live here. Also, I knew that if I wanted to have a better quality of life, I needed to stay. My goal was to learn English; to have a good command of the language in order to continue having some jobs related with my profession as a social communicator. I love talking, socializing and working with people, English being the key to communicate in these areas. Certainly, I have had ups and downs in many ways, but I really believe that God has a plan for everybody and if we have some experiences that were not expected, we need to take the positive side of this and continue. For almost 13 years I have been here in Hamilton and my respect and love for this country is bigger every day. Canada gave me the opportunity to be the mother of a boy who is my life and partner in this journey through life. It also gave me wonderful friends which became my family. In Canada I have had the opportunity to learn, work and educate myself, and improve some skills I had no idea idea that I have. Last June I attained my Diploma in social service work and I hope to always work and encourage people to have a quality life, now as a professional and also as a friend. Lastly, I will keep my Hispanic roots and culture forever. I am very proud of being a Latin woman, proud of my people, our music, our happiness, our dancing, and our customs, I will keep these in my heart and my life. I am teaching that to my son who will know his roots as well.

I have known about the Jose Eduardo Lopez (JELMS) scholarship since I was young because it was, and continues to be, a very popular and supportive organization that helps young Hispanic students achieve their dreams. I was very fortunate to receive the first prize of the JELMS scholarship in 2016 and on that day, I have never felt so grateful and supported in my life. JELMS helped me take the first step in my future, which is attending post-secondary school. I am currently enrolled in the BScN collaborative program of Western –Fanshawe in London, ON. In my first year of nursing school, I have discovered who I am as a person, which is a strong faithful Hispanic nurse prepared to contribute to the society. The JELMS community has also helped me accept and love who I am by embracing my Hispanic roots. My parents immigrated to this country looking for a better. I am honoured to be a recipient of the JELMS scholarship and I encourage other Hispanic students to never stop dreaming because dreams can come true. I would like to thank the Jose Eduardo Lopez Scholarship board of directors for all their support and for believing in my nursing dream.

Tuve el gran honor de ganarme la beca JELMS en el 2014. Fue para mí no solo un inmenso aporte económico sino que también influyó de manera muy positiva en mi lado emocional. Gracias a esta beca pude lograr mis objetivos como estudiante que da sus primeros pasos en la universidad y tiene sueños y metas por cumplir. La beca JELMS es realmente importante para nosotros, los estudiantes hispanos, que no contamos con un apoyo económico pero que deseamos fervientemente hacer realidad nuestros sueños como profesionales al servicio de la comunidad. Es importante para mi mencionar el agradecimiento que sentimos los que hemos sido beneficiados con la beca JELMS y con todas las personas que han estado involucradas directa o indirectamente que con su esfuerzo y tenacidad han puesto su granito de arena en pro de esta noble causa. En este momento estoy empezando mi cuarto año de mi bachelor de honor de Ciencias Médicas en Brock University, con el anhelo de poder convertirme en un exitoso odontólogo con la ayuda de Dios. Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para hacer un llamado a los estudiantes hispanos para que se esfuercen por su futuro y terminen la high school, ojalá con un buen nivel académico y así se hagan merecedores a esta beca JELMS para continuar con el estudio avanzado.

Desde joven, sabía sobre la beca JELMS porque era y sigue siendo una organización muy popular y de apoyo que ayuda a estudiantes hispanos jóvenes a alcanzan sus sueños. Me siento muy afortunada de haber obtenido el primer premio de la beca JELMS en 2016 sintiéndome tan agradecida y apoyada en mi vida. JELMS me ayudó a tomar el primer paso en mi futuro, que es el de asistir a la escuela post-secundaria. Actualmente estoy inscrita en el programa BScN colaboración de Western -Fanshawe en London, ON. En mi primer año en la escuela de enfermería, he descubierto quién soy como persona, soy una enfermera hispana fuerte y fiel dispuesta a contribuir a la sociedad. La comunidad JELMS también me ha ayudado a aceptar y amar mis raíces hispanas. Mis padres inmigraron a este país buscando un futuro mejor. Me siento honrada de haber recibido la beca JELMS y animo a otros estudiantes hispanos a que nunca dejen de soñar porque los sueños pueden hacerse realidad. It was a great honour to be selected to win the JELMS scholarship in 2014. Not only was this an immense economic support, but it also had a great positive impact on my emotional well-being. Thanks to this scholarship, I was able to achieve my goals as a student who was taking his first steps in university with dreams to fulfill. The JELMS scholarship is vital for us, the hispanic students, who cannot count on financial support, but have aspirations to become professionals in order to better serve the community. It is important for me to mention how grateful those who have benefited from the JELMS scholarship program are. I would like to acknowledge all of those who have been involved directly or indirectly and with their effort and tenacity have contributed positively toward a noble cause. Currently, I am starting my fourth year at Brock University pursuing an Honours Medical Science Bachelor degree, with the desire of becoming a successful dentist, God willing. I want to take advantage of this opportunity to encourage all hispanic students to strive to finish high school at their full potential and thus, can become JELMS scholarship candidates, which will benefit their post-secondary education

a comunidad Hispana en especial nuestros queridos adultos mayores, han tenido a través del programa Adultos Mayores en Acción, la oportunidad de aprender a hacer trabajos manuales y como usar un libro electrónico. Entre las actividades que ellos más han disfrutado se encuentran; tejer en crochet y dos agujas, bordar, costura, y discutir las historias que han leído en su libro electrónico. Este programa ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de Service Canada, el cual ha permitido a las participantes compartir sus experiencias y habilidades entre ellas así como apoyarse mutuamente para aprender unas de otras. No hay duda que estos programas contribuyen no solo al mantenimiento de la capacidad cognitiva de estas personas sino también a romper su soledad contribuyendo a su salud mental y emocional, ayudando al mejoramiento de sus relaciones sociales. Las participantes han asumido con gran responsabilidad y puntualidad este proyecto, y es evidente el orgullo que sienten de haber aprendido algo nuevo y diferente. Algunas poseen más destreza que las otras en actividades específicas; sin embargo esto no es una barrera, por el contrario se motivan unas a otras y se esfuerzan por aprender. Los resultados de su esfuerzo se reflejan en la sonrisa y el rato agradable que han compartido creando vínculos de amistad y compañerismo entre ellas. AFH ratifica con este programa su compromiso de promover actividades para el adulto mayor y espera que otras oportunidades surjan en el futuro en beneficio de los adultos mayores de nuestra comunidad.

he Hispanic community, especially our beloved seniors, have had through the “ Seniors in Action program” the opportunity to learn how to do manual work and how to use an e-book. Among the activities they have most enjoyed are crochet knitting, two needles, embroidering, sewing, and discussing the stories they have read in their -ebook. This program has been made possible due to the support of Service Canada, which has allowed participants to share their experiences and skills with each other and to support each other to learn from each other. There is no doubt that these programs contribute not only to the maintenance of the cognitive capacity of the seniors but also to break their loneliness contributing to their mental and emotional health and helping improving their social relations. The participants have assumed with great responsibility and punctuality this project, and the pride they feel of having learned something new and different is evident. Some have more skills than others in specific activities; however this is not a barrier, on the contrary, it motivates each other striving them to learn. The results of their effort are reflected in the smile and the pleasant time they have shared creating bonds of friendship and fellowship between them. AFH ratifies with this program its commitment to promote activities for the elderly and hopes that other opportunities will arise in the future for the benefit of older adults in our community.

AFH Futsal Tournament

El Torneo de Futsal que se realizó durante este año marca la séptima jornada y la segunda nominada como “Julio Narváez AFH Futsal Tournament”. Sería la tercera jornada en colaboración con Hamilton Futsal el que nos ha brindado un nivel de profesionalismo y calidad en el torneo con árbitros de ligas mayores de Ontario. .El torneo se realizó con 6 equipos de entre 7-8 jugadores por equipo. Este año se logró activar la jornada de niños entre 9-13 años que fue una actividad muy placentera por la participación de nuestros niños de la comunidad y con una muy buena respuesta. En esta categoría se lograron 2 equipos con un total de 12 a 13 niños.. Se jugó por 7 semanas de Febrero a Abril. Esta acitivad deportiva que la AFH prepara para los jóvenes y familias de nuestra comunidad requiere de un gran esfuerzo personal, financiero y logístico al que la AFH se ha comprometido por ya 6 años. Este como muchos de nuestros programas y actividades no genera ganancias financieras, al contrario son calificadas como beneficios comunitarios de crecimiento y aprendizaje. AFH continuará evaluando el interés por este programa y

los recursos necesarios para seguir con la actividad que se desempeña para el bien de la comunidad. This year’s Futsal tournament will mark the 7th season and its 2nd year under the banner titled the Julio Narvaez AFH Futsal tournament. With the partnership and collaboration of Hamilton Futsal we formed a great level of professionalism and a quality tournament which provided quality refereeing. There were 6 adult teams with approximately 7-8 players on each team. This year’s highlight was the inclusion of 2 youth teams between the ages of 9-13 who played the same amount of games as the adult league, both consisting of 7 games played through February and April. The Futsal tournaments have been one of the many activities that the AFH has implemented since the beginning of our community service which requires a great deal of volunteers, logistical and financial resources. AFH will continue evaluating the interest for this program and the required resources to continue providing this activity in proceeding years.

El emigrar a otro país es por si ya una gran odisea, ésta es aún más grande cuando el país de destino es uno donde no se habla el mismo idioma. Este cambio tan radical en la vida de todo emigrante trae consigo muchas veces frustraciones, preocupaciones, pero también oportunidades. La gran mayoría de las personas adultas traen consigo experiencia, conocimientos y habilidades. El no poder trabajar en una área similar a lo que se hacía en el país de origen, puede tener una consecuencia bastante negativa en la personas. Es común que la necesidad de trabajar haga

que los inmigrantes empiecen a trabajar en el primer trabajo que encuentren, muchas veces en algo totalmente distinto a lo que solían hacer. Aunque pareciera que la experiencia, conocimientos y habilidades acumuladas no sirven mucho en el nuevo trabajo, la realidad es muy diferente. Estas características que traen las personas son en todo momento muy útiles, particularmente cuando se usan para re-inventarse e iniciar un nuevo oficio o trabajo. Hay muchos ejemplos en la comunidad hispana donde las personas tuvieron que cambiar de oficios y al

poner toda esa experiencia, conocimiento y habilidades, junto al tesón y deseos de progresar les ha permitido establecer sus propios negocios. Esta pequeña nota resalta la capacidad de adaptarse que han demostrado algunos hispanos en Hamilton y que demuestra que es posible, aunque no sea fácil, aprender un nuevo oficio y empezar un nuevo negocio usando la experiencia, conocimientos y habilidades que traen. Esperamos que el ejemplo de estas personas sirva de incentivo e inspire a otros que han llegado o que llegarán a nuestra ciudad.

Un Nuevo Comienzo A New Beginning The emigration to another country is already a great odyssey; this odyssey is an even bigger one when the destination country is one where the same language is not spoken. This radical change in the life of every immigrant often brings frustrations and worries, but also opportunities. The vast majority of adults bring with them experience, knowledge and skills. Not being able to work in an area similar to what was done in the country of origin can have a rather negative effect on people. It is common that the need to

work causes immigrants to start working on the first job they find, often in something totally different from what they are used to do. Although it seems that accumulated experience, knowledge and skills do not serve much in the new work, the reality is very different. These characteristics that people bring are always very useful, particularly when used to re-invent oneself and start a new job. There are many examples in the Hispanic community where people had to change jobs and putting all that experience, knowledge and skills together with the

determination and desire to progress has allowed them to establish their own businesses. This small note highlights the ability to adapt that some Hispanics have demonstrated in Hamilton and shows that it is possible, although not easy, to learn a new trade and start a new business using the experience, knowledge and skills they bring. We hope that the example of these people will serve as an incentive and inspire others who have arrived or who will arrive in the future to our city.

Antonio del Prete

Adriana Giraldo

Antonio fue funcionario de gobierno en Venezuela donde llegó a ser el Director Ejecutivo de Administración de la Fundación del Niño. En el 2008, Antonio y su familia establecen en Hamilton su hogar. Antonio aprendió a través del trabajo el oficio de Handyman y hoy, como trabajador independiente, ofrece sus servicios a sus clientes. El consejo de Antonio a otros inmigrantes hispanos es que no se rindan ante la adversidad y no abandonen sus metas. Que como familia se apoyen en sus decisiones y que con Fe en Dios, caminen juntos ya que más temprano que tarde los resultados de sus esfuerzos se materializarán.

Adriana, una Ingeniero Industrial originalmente de Colombia trabajó como administradora de empresas, con enfoque financiero, antes de venir a Canadá en el año 2007, En Canadá, Adriana estudió y se licenció como Esteticista y Terapeuta en Cuidado de Piel y Tratamiento Corporal y hoy orgullosamente atiende a su clientela en su salón en Stoney Creek, Ontario. Adriana dice que uno nunca sabe dónde o cuando una nueva oportunidad llega a nuestras vidas y por lo tanto, deberíamos tomar ventaja cada vez que llegan a nosotros. Para Adriana un pasatiempo favorito se convirtió en un trabajo y fuente de ingresos. Adriana esta agradecida de la vida, de Dios y de sus clientes.

Antonio was a government official in Venezuela where he became the Executive Director of Administration of the Children’s Foundation. In 2008, Antonio and his family established their home in Hamilton. Antonio learned through the work the trade of Handyman and today, as an independent worker, he offers his services to his clients. Antonio’s advice to other Hispanic immigrants is not to give up in the face of adversity and not abandon their goals, as a family, take and support the decisions. He adds that with Faith in God, the family should walk together and sooner rather than later, the results of such an effort will be materialized.

Adriana, an Industrial Engineer originally from Colombia, worked as a business administrator, with a financial focus, before coming to Canada in 2007. In Canada, Adriana studied and graduated as a Aesthetician and Skin Care and Body Treatment/Therapist and now proudly serves her clientele in her Beauty Salon in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Adriana says that one never knows where or when an opportunity comes to our lives and therefore, we should take advantage every time they come to us. For Adriana, a favorite pastime became a job and source of income. Adriana is grateful to life, to God and to her clients.

Sandy Ramírez Jorge Ortiz Sandy era profesor de idiomas en República Dominicana, llegó a Canadá en el año 2009. En Canadá, Sandy aprendió el oficio de la construcción. En este nuevo oficio, Sandy ofrece a su clientela trabajo de renovaciones, siendo su especialidad diseño exterior e instalación de murallas y pisos con piedras ornamentales. Sandy enfatiza que Canadá es un país que ofrece muchas oportunidades y que no importa el trabajo u oficio que se tenga, este se debe hacer siempre con amor.

Jorge llegó a Canadá en el 2005 y en su México natal era supervisor de un taller de mantención mecánico. Lleva 10 años trabajando en su nuevo oficio como diseñador de pisos e instalador de cerámicas, tanto en pisos como en murallas. El mensaje que Jorge les da a otros inmigrantes hispanos es que no importa el trabajo que hagan, deben tratar de hacerlo lo mejor posible para dar prestigio a nuestra comunidad.

Sandy was a language teacher in the Dominican Republic. He arrived in Canada in 2009. In Canada, Sandy learned the trade of construction. In this new trade, Sandy offers to its clientele home renovation services. Sandy’s specialty is exterior design and installation of walls and floors with ornamental stones. Sandy emphasizes that Canada is a country that offers many opportunities and that no matter what job or trade you have, this should always be done with love.

Jorge arrived to Canada in 2005. He was a supervisor in a mechanical maintenance workshop in his native Mexico. He has been working in his new trade for 10 years as a floor designer and ceramic installer, both in floors and in walls. The message Jorge gives to other Hispanic immigrants is that no matter what work they do, they should try to do their best to give prestige to our community.

Pi cn i c 2017 La Asociación Fraternidad Hispana celebró el 19 de Agosto, su picnic anual en el Dundas Driving Park. Este año se logró reunir a más de 180 personas. En esta celebración, niños y adultos disfrutaron de unas sabrosas hamburguesas y perros calientes así como entretenimiento para los niños. Fue una perfecta ocasión para compartir y conversar con otros miembros de nuestra comunidad. The Hispanic Fraternity Association celebrated on August 19th its annual picnic at the Dundas Driving Park. This year, the picnic was attended by more than 180 people. During this celebration, children and adults enjoyed a hamburger and hotdogs, entertainment for children. The event was a great opportunity to share and talk with other members of the community.
