Reconciliation and Penance ± An essential element of how we grow in communion with our Lord is through honestly looking into the eyes of Our Lord as we come face to face with our sinfulness and Our Lord’s mercy and love. As you do, contemplate His mercy and then celebrate it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and do your penance received, as together having each done this regular work of the spiritual life, we find our way back to Him, renewed. The sacrament will be available each weekday (now including Thursday) after the 12:10 pm Mass at Sacred Heart, as well as on Saturday afternoons at our Cathedral from 35 pm.
Reconciliation Liturgy this Week ± Joined by over 20 brother priests, our parish reconciliation liturgy with individual confession will be celebrated at our Cathedral on this coming Tuesday, March 26th at 7 pm. Plan to join us as we fulfill with God’s mercy, His call to us: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart….” (Joel 2: 12)
For your use in preparing for the sacrament and examining your conscience, may I recommend the following questions for reflection, based on the Ten Commandments:
1) I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before me. Do I give God time every day in prayer? Have I been involved with superstitious practices or have I been involved with the occult? Have I created other "gods" in my life, such as money, security, power, people, substance abuse, etc., that place Our Lord second or even last in my life? 2) You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have I used God´s name in vain: lightly or carelessly? Have I wished evil upon any other person? 3) Remember to keep holy the Lord´s Day. Have I deliberately missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation? Do I do needless work on Sunday, avoid rest or spending time with family or friends? 4) Honor your father and your mother. Have I neglected my duties to my parents, spouse and children? Have I given my family good religious example? Do I try to bring peace into my home life? Do I care for my aged and infirm relatives? 5) You shall not kill. Have I physically harmed anyone? Have I encouraged or helped anyone to have an abortion? Have I encouraged or condoned sterilization? Have I engaged in artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization? Have I participated in or approved of euthanasia? Have I purposefully injured the good reputation of another? 6) You shall not commit adultery. Have I been faithful to my vocation of life, to vows of marriage in thought and action? Have I respected all members of the opposite sex, or have I thought of other people as mere objects? 7) You shall not steal. Have I stolen what is not mine? Have I returned or made restitution for what I have stolen? Do I waste time at work, school, and home? Do I gamble excessively, thereby denying my family of their needs? 8) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I lied? Have I gossiped Do I speak badly of others behind their back? Am I sincere in my dealings with others? Am I critical, negative or uncharitable in my thoughts of others? 9) You shall not desire your neighbor´s wife. Have I consented to impure thoughts or actions? Have I used reading, movies, television, internet or conversation to engage impurity? 10) You shall not desire your neighbor´s goods. Am I jealous of what other people have? Am I greedy or selfish? Do I regularly participate giving thanks to God for His blessings by supporting the mission of our parish through offering and our Diocese through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal? Are material possessions the purpose of my life?
UPDATE: New Parish Center, Gym and Athletic Fields ± Information Meetings Times Set ± Note that planning for our new athletic fields, parish center and gym on the Holy Name of Jesus campus, as well as further development and renovation of our downtown campus has not been forgotten and has been a high priority for me, as I know the great needs. Steady work on planning and pricing has been ongoing since my arrival as pastor last summer, with our Parish Council, Finance Council and our Building Committee, staff and many others working diligently on all the details.
Information sessions on the phases of the project have been ongoing and are now completed for our school parents. These can still join our parish community for additional information sessions planned on the dates, as follows:
Entire Parish ± March 27, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the Cathedral School Hall March 28, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the Cathedral School Hall (Note meeting place)
My renewed thanks to Paul Bedo, who is the Chair of our Building Committee, as well as all the Committee members Steve Raper, Chris Derrenbacher and Carmen Liuzzo, for their great dedication to this important project Parish Council Nominations ± The principal advisory body for pastors is the parish council, which in most parishes is comprised of members which are nominated and elected by the parishioners of the parish for a term of service. This service is to assist the pastor in strategic planning in the mission of Our Lord for the parish. There is much to consider, especially and not only with the rapid expansion of our parish, but also the work of evangelization to assist all of us in our growth in the spiritual life and discipleship of Our Lord Jesus ± an important reminder as growth in number does not always equal growth in Our Lord.
I am grateful for all those who have served on this important council and especially Joseph Batta, Carlos Calderon, Erlinda Garcia Estrada, Peter Ferket, AnnaMaria Taylor, Elizabeth White, and Jose Zavala who will be shortly completing their term of service on the Council.
Prayerfully consider offering a nomination of one who you believe would be helpful to advise me in the ministry and mission of our parish. Nominees must be registered parishioners of the Cathedral, over the age of 18, and in good standing with the Church. Nominations will conclude this weekend with nomination forms located in the pews at each Mass. Once these have been received, the election for new Council members will take place by paper ballot and online balloting after our celebration of Easter.

The First Scrutiny will be observed at the 10:00 am Mass this weekend. Readings for Year A can be found on www.USCCB.org
First Reading Ex 3:18a, 1315
Moses was tending the flock of his fatherinlaw Jethro, the priest of Midian. Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There an angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in fire flaming out of a bush. As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed. So Moses decided, “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight, and see why the bush is not burned.”
Second Reading 1 Cor 10:16, 1012
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.
These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely, Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. God called out to him from the bush, “Moses! Moses!” These things happened to them as an example, He answered, “Here I am.” and they have been written down as a warning to us, God said, “Come no nearer! upon whom the end of the ages has come. Remove the sandals from your feet, Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure for the place where you stand is holy ground. should take care not to fall. I am the God of your fathers, “ he continued, “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.” The Word of the Lord R. Thanks be to God. Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. But the LORD said, Verse before the Gospel Mt 4:17 “I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt R. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory! and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, Repent, says the Lord; the kingdom of heaven is at hand. so I know well what they are suffering. R.Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory! Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians Gospel Lk 13:19 and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious land, Some people told Jesus about the Galileans a land flowing with milk and honey.” whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Moses said to God, “But when I go to the Israelites Jesus said to them in reply, and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way if they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? God replied, “I am who am.” By no means! Then he added, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: But I tell you, if you do not repent, I AM sent me to you.” you will all perish as they did! God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites: Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them² The LORD, the God of your fathers, do you think they were more guilty the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? has sent me to you. By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, “This is my name forever; you will all perish as they did!" thus am I to be remembered through all generations.” And he told them this parable: The Word of the Lord R. Thanks be to God. "There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his or chard, Responsorial Psalm Ps 103: 12, 34, 67, 8, 11. and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, R. The Lord is kind and merciful. 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree For the 5p, 7a and 10a Masses: but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?' He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.'" For the 12:00 pm Mass:

Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.
1 Corinthians 10: 12
Ooh! No doubt about it, this passage is a rebuke against overconfidence and feeling completely secure in your faith. The warning is immediately balanced in the next sentence by a reassurance that God will provide a way to correct.
In this season of selfexamination, we should go beyond personal sin and think about our part in corporate sin or as the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) refers to it, “social sin.” The catechetical tradition recalls that there are “sins that cry to heaven” including the cry of the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan. . . (1867). The Catechism gets very specific how this occurs when it states that “we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them: by participating directly and voluntarily in them; by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them; by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so; by protecting evildoers (1868). Sins give rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to divine goodness. “Structures of sin” are the expression and effect of personal sins. . .they constitute a “social sin” (1869). Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI reminds us: The Church cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has many committees working on, advocating for or against, and issuing documents on areas of injustice.
However, the work of justice must begin at the personal level. “Widespread poverty, discrimination, denial of basic rights, and violence result from many peoples’ actions (or failures to act) because of greed, racism, selfishness, or indifference (Reconciliatio et Paenitentia, nos. 2, 16). We are all called to consider how we contribute to structures of sin in our personal, economic, and public choices. For example, do we take into account the treatment of workers when we make purchases? How do our consumption choices contribute to environmental degradation? Are we aware and informed? Do we take the time to educate ourselves about issues that affect the community and advocate on behalf of those who are poor and vulnerable?” (USCCB reflection on the social dimensions of the Sacrament of Penance: http:// www.usccb.org/about/justicepeaceandhumandevelopment/ upload/Penancehandout.pdf )
As you seek God’s forgiveness in your daily prayer, ask to be strengthened to work toward justice, peace, and reconciliation in situations of conflict and oppression in your own lives and in the larger community.

Primera Lectura Ex 3, 18a. 1315
