The Rivalry Continues

The rivalry continued between the Warriors and the Reds when the varsity softball and baseball teams faced off.  Warriors baseball saw the Reds twice in March and split the series, losing the home game 1-5 and winning the away game 13-9. 

The annual Future Chefs Competition has returned to NCLUSD for the third year. 

In the lone game between the Lady Warriors and Lady Reds, the Warriors won 17-5. This season the Lady Warriors have incorporated themes into home  games, including First Responder Appreciation Night, NCLUSD Staff Appreciation Night and Armed Forces Appreciation Night. The night they played the GHS Reds was dedicated to late Newman Police Department Cpl. Ronil Singh. First Responders from Newman and Gustine were present to honor Cpl. Singh, players from both teams wore blue ribbons and a "Thin Blue Line" flag hung in center field. Instead of the OHS purple, the Lady Warriors wore special black jerseys that featured a memorial patch with black pants and white socks. 

This year the competition had three phases, a written portion, site competition and district-wide finals. All students 4th12th who wished to participate this year were required to submit a short writing sample describing why they love cooking. From there students were selected to advance to the site-level pizza competition. Hurd Barrington, Bonita, Hunt, Von Renner and Orestimba advanced two chefs to the final round, Yolo advanced three.  The finals were hosted at OHS, where students competed in a burger cook off! Overall four winners were chosen, an Elementary, Middle, High School and overall champion. All students who participated received certificates of recognition from Assemblyman Adam Gray. Winners: Overall- Mallory Solano (Barrington) Middle- Pedro Castillo (Yolo), Elementary- Jhordin Foster (Bonita), High School- Bryanna Moncada.

Footsteps2Brilliance Reading Madness Tournament

To follow up on the success of the 8, 16 and 25 million word challenges NLCUSD took inspiration from the March Madness college basketball tournament and launched the first Footsteps2Brilliance Reading Madness Tournament. All 43 TK-3 classes were entered into the 6 week long tournament and have been competing in weekly head to head classroom reading challenges. The tournament rules were as follows: each class began the tournament with a total of zero words, and competed in a week A. Marroquin long, Thursday-Friday, reading face off with another class, at the end of each week the class with the most words read advanced on to the next round and the other class was eliminated, once a class advanced to another round they would begin the new week at zero and start again. To reward students for advancing from one week to the next a variety of prizes were awarded. Classes who advanced to the Sweet 16’s were given a $25.00 Amazon Purchase Order, the Elite 8 were surprised with a churro party, the Final Four will be attending a Modesto Nuts game and be recognized in a special pregame ceremony and the two teams in the finals were given $100 Amazon Purchase Orders. The Footsteps2Brilliance Reading Madness Champions were rewarded with a celebratory pizza party and Championship t-shirts! After all, what's a tournament without championship t-shirts? After 5 weeks of competition the field was narrowed down from 43 classes to 2; Ms. Marroquin’s 2nd Grade class from Von Renner and Ms. Van Dyke’s 2nd Grade class from Hurd Barrington! The two went head to head for the sixth and final  week of competition, totaling an incredible 5,227,830 words. Unfortunately there could be only one Footsteps2Brilliance Reading Madness Champion and that honor belongs to Ms. Marroquin's 2nd Grade Class! Congratulations Alex Haro, Anthony Gudiño, Pamela García, Andrés García, Sophia Navarro, Moel Gavino, Ali Contreras, Katie Hernandez, Dayanara Martínez, Rafael Vázquez Reyes, Oscar Carraño Heredia, Carlos Adán Romero, Ximena Astrid Jenkins, Ashley Díaz, Sergio González, Lillian Rodríguez, Sophia Gomes, Antasi Richardson, Yolanda Espinoza, Maricruz Sánchez-Barragán, Juan Benítez, Kiara Jackson, Nevaeh De la Cruz, Emma Medrano, Naomi Ledezma Millan and Pheonix Aries Carpenter! With all the success students and staff had in the previous challenges there was no doubt that the number of words read would continue to climb, however no one imagined they would skyrocket they way they did. The tournament ran from March 1, 2019 to April 12, 2019, during that time students read a total of 34,499,525 words!  While there can technically be only one tournament champion, the ultimate prize is literacy, and with over 70,000,000 words read this year every single student is a champion. Congratulations to all our students and staff who competed, stay tuned for the next challenge!

La Rivalidad Continúa

La rivalidad continúo entre los Warriors y los Reds Cuando los equipos de béisbol del equipo varsity se enfrentaron.  Los Warriors de béisbol vieron a los Reds dos ceves en Marzo y dividieron series, perdiendo el juego local 1-5 y ganando el juego de visitante 13-9. 

La Competición Annual de Chefs ha vuelto a NCLUSD para el tercer año. 

En el partido soliatrio entre las Lady Warriors y las damas Reds, las Warriors ganaron 17-5. Esta temporada las Lady Warriors tienen temas incorporados en los juegos de casa, incluyendo Primera noche de apreciación del respondedor, apreciación del personal de NCLUSD, y noche de apreciación de las fuerzas armadas. La noche que jugaron las GHS Red fue dedicado al Departamento de Policía de Newman Cpl. Ronil Singh. Primeros respondedores de Newman y Gustine estuvieron presentes en honor a Cpl. Singh, jugadores de ambos equipos llevaban cintas azules y colgaba una bandera de "Thin Blue Line" en lugar de la púrpura de OHS, las Warriors usaban jerseys negras espciales que presentaban un parche conmemorativo con pantalón negro y medias blancas. 

Este año el concurso tuvo tres fases, una parte escrita, competición de sitio y finales de todo el distrito. Todos los estudiantes de 4 to al 12 grado que deseaban participar este año debían presentar una breve muestra de escritura describiendo por qué les gusta cocinar. A partir de ahí los estudiantes fueron seleccionados para avanzar al concurso de pizza a nivel de sitio. Hurd Barrington, Bonita, Hunt Von Renner y Orestimba avanzaron do schefs a la ronda final Yolo avanzó a tres estudiantes. Las finales se llevaron a cabo en OHS, donde los estudiantes compitieron en cocinar hamburguesas. En total se eligieron cuatro ganadores, uno de primaria, secundaria, prepatoria y campaoa general. Todos los alumnos que participaron recibieron certificaods de reconocimiento del Asambleísta Adam Gra. Ganadores: En general: Mallory Solano (Barrington) Yolo: Pedro Castillo, Escuela Primaria: Jhordin Foster (Bonita), Escuela Secundaria: Bryanna Moncada.

Torneo de Lectura Footsteps2Brilliance

Para dar seguimiento al éxito del reto de 8, 16 y 25 milones de  palabras que tomó NCLUSD  insparación de lar marcha torneo de  baloncesto de la universidad y lanzó el primero torneo de todas las 43  clases de TK-3 fueron ingresadas en el torneo de 6 semanas de duración y han estado compitiendo cada semana cara a cara con retos  de lectura. Las reglas del torneo  fueron como sigue: cada clase  comenzó el torneo con un total de  cero palabras, y compitió en una  semana larga, de jueves a viernes,  competiendo con otra clase, al final de cada semana las clase con más palabras leídas avanzaron a la  A. Marroquin siguiente ronda y la otra clase se  eliminó, una vez que una clase  avanzó a otra ronda, comenzaríla nueva semana en cero y comenzarí de nuevo.  Para recompensar a los estudiantes por aanzar de una semana a la siguiente, se otorgaron una variedad de premios. Clases que avanzaron a las 16 palabras recibieron una orden de compra de Amazon de $25.00,  los Elite 8 se sorprendieron con una fiesta, los cuatro finalistas asistiran a un juego de Modesto Nuts y seran reconocidos en una ceremonia especial previa al juego y los dos equipos en las finales fueron entrgados $100 para compra de Amazon. Los campeones de Footsteps2Brilliance Reading Madness fueron recompensados con una fiesta de pizza y camisets! Después de todo, ¿Qué es un torneo sin camisetas de campeonato? Después de 5 semanas de competencia, el campo se redujo de 43 calses a 2; La clase de segundo grad de la Sra. Marroquín de Von Renner y la clase de segundo grado de la Sra. Van Dyke de Hurd Barrington! Los dos compitieron cara cara para la sexta y última semana de competencia, sumando un increíble 5,227,830 palabras. Desafortunadamente, solo puede haber un campeón de Locura de Lectura Footsteps2Brilliance, y ese honor pertenece a las clase de segundo grado de la Sra. Marroquín! Flicitaciones a Alex Haro, Anthony Gudiño, Pamela García, Andrés García, Sophia Navarro, Moel Gavino, Ali Contreras, Katie Hernández, Dayanra Martínez, Rafael Vázque Reyes, Oscar Carraño Heredia, Carlos Adán, Romero, Ximena Astrid Jenkins, Ashley Díaz, Sergio González, Lillian Rodríguez, Sophia Gomes, Antasi Richardson, Yolanda Espinoza, Maricruz Sánchez-Barragán, Juan Benítez, Kiara Jackson, Nevaeh De la Cruz, Emma Medrano, Naomi Ledezma Milan y Pheonix Aries Carpenter! Con todo el éxito que tuvieron los estudiantes y el personal en los desafíos anteriores, no había duda de que la cantidad de palabras leídas continúen subiendo, sin embargo, nadie imaginó que se dispararían como lo hicieron. El torneo se desarrolló desde el 1 de marzo de 2019 hasta el 12 de abril de 2019, durante ese tiempo los estudiantes leyeron un total de 34,499,525 palabras! Si bien técnicamente solo puede haber un torneo de campeón, el permio final es las alfabetización, y con más de 70,000,000 palabras leídas este año, cada estudiante es un campeón.  ¡Felicitaciones a todos nuestros estudiantes y personal que compitieron, esten atentos para el próximo desafío!
