GOVERNING BOARD CANDIDATE STATEMENT SUNNYSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 12 REBECCA “BEKI” QUINTERO My interest in serving on the Sunnyside Unified School District School Board is to promote positive change that will benefit our children. I believe in our

children and the importance of their development into responsible citizens. I want to build a strong and cohesive school board, to rebuild community trust, to restore transparency and communication and to return our ratings to A+ and Blue Ribbon Schools.

I have been a strong advocate and steadfast community leader for the past

forty years working tirelessly to enact programs that engage and educate the youth of this District so that they may actively pursue opportunities that will

benefit others on a larger, more global scale.

I have worked and will continue to work with local businesses to develop

strong support for our schools. I have worked on programs like the

Community Justice Boards, volunteer graffiti abatement and the All American Awards, a recognition program sponsored by the Sunnyside Neighborhood

Association. I founded the Community Peace Garden in Manuel Herrera Jr.

Park where I have dedicated my time and efforts to children of the community on their journey of personal growth, giving them a chance to work the soil and learn life lessons.

All of these programs have positively impacted our children. I have dedicated

a lifetime to children guiding them to take on responsibilities and challenges

they are so capable of. I have seen juveniles change their lives because someone believed in them.

I have cultivated strong working relationships with elected officials and local

media to keep education and youth issues at the forefront of our collective

consciousness. I have learned to make hard and important decisions while

working with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association. These decisions affected the community as a whole.

My husband and I, both Sunnyside graduates, are proud to have lived in this district all of our lives. Our parents and siblings also make Sunnyside home.

I have the ability, the passion, the experience and commitment to fulfill these goals if given the opportunity to sit on this School Board.

CHANGE needs to happen. We must act now, there is too much at stake – Our children’s education – Our future!

DECLARACIÓN DEL CANDIDATO A LA JUNTA DE GOBIERNO DISTRICTO ESCOLAR UNIFICADO NO. 12 DE SUNNYSIDE

Mi interés por servir en la Junta Escolar del Distrito Escolar Unificado de

Sunnyside es para fomentar un cambio positivo que beneficie a nuestros hijos. Creo en nuestros hijos y en la importancia en que se transformen en ciudadanos responsables.

Quiero construir una junta escolar sólida y cohesiva, para rehacer la confianza

de la comunidad, restaurar la transparencia y comunicación y volver a nuestras calificaciones de Escuelas A+ y de Elite.

He sido una sólida defensora e inquebrantable líder de la comunidad durante los últimos 40 años trabajando incansablemente para establecer programas que promuevan y eduquen a la juventud en este distrito de forma que puedan

perseguir de una forma activa las oportunidades que beneficiaran a otros a

una escala más grande y más global. He trabajado y continuaré trabajando con las empresas locales para desarrollar un fuerte apoyo a nuestras escuelas. He

trabajado en programas como las Juntas de Justicia de la Comunidad,

eliminación del graffiti voluntaria y en los Premios All American, un programa

de reconocimiento patrocinado por la Asociación del Vecindario de Sunnyside. Fundé el Jardín de la Paz de la Comunidad en el parque de Manuel Herrera Jr.

donde he dedicado mi tiempo y esfuerzo a los niños de la comunidad en su jornada hacia el crecimiento personal, dándoles la oportunidad de trabajar la tierra y aprender las lecciones de la vida.

Todos estos programas han tenido un impacto positivo en nuestros niños. He dedicado toda una vida a los niños guiándoles para tomar responsabilidades y retos de los que son tan capaces. He visto a jóvenes cambiar sus vidas porque alguien creían en ellos.

He cultivado sólida relaciones de trabajo con los oficiales elegidos y los medios de información locales para mantener los temas educativos y de la juventud al frente de su conciencia colectiva. He aprendido a tomar decisiones difíciles e importantes mientras trabajaba con la Asociación del Vecindario de

Sunnyside. Estas decisiones afectaron a la comunidad en su totalidad.

Mi esposo y yo, ambos graduados de Sunnyside, nos sentimos orgullosos de haber vivido en este distrito todas nuestras vidas. Nuestros padres y hermanos también hicieron de Sunnyside su hogar.

Tengo la habilidad, la pasión, la experiencia y el compromiso de cumplir estos objetivos si se me da la oportunidad de estar en la Junta Escolar.

En necesario que haya CAMBIO. Debemos actuar ahora, hay mucho en la balanza. ¡La educación de nuestros niños, nuestro futuro! Gracias por su voto el día 20 de May, 2014
