P REPARING FOR THE C ONSECRATION OF THE A RCHDIOCESE OF S AN F RANCISCO TO THE I MMACULATE H EART OF M ARY Part 3 AS LUCIA RELATED, the children were deeply affected by this apparition from the heavenly messenger: “I don't know why, but the apparitions of our Lady produced in us effects quite different from the angel's visitations We felt in both instances the same intimate happiness, peace and joy, but instead of the physical prostration the angel imposed, our Lady brought a feeling of expansion and freedom; and instead of this annihilation in the divine presence, we wished only to exult in our joy. The three little shepherd children had encountered a celestial being who, in his purely spiritual nature, communicated to them something of the awesome holiness and transcendence of Almighty God.

“His words sank so deeply into our minds that we never forgot them, and ever after we used to spend long periods on our knees repeating them, sometimes until we fell down exhausted.” Later that year of 1916, in the summer, the children received a second apparition from the angel, as they were playing in the heat of day. Lucia relates: “Suddenly we saw the same angel near us. ‘What are you doing? You must pray! Pray! The hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs for you. You must offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most High.’ “’But how are we to sacrifice?’ I asked.” ‘In every way you can offer sacrifice to God in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for sinners. In this way you will bring peace to our country, for I am its guardian angel, the Angel of Portugal. Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.’ The children were again deeply affected by the magnificence and awesomeness of the holiness of God, communicated through the Angel of Portugal. Francisco could only see the apparitions but he could not hear the words spoken either by the angel or by Our Lady the next year. Try as he might, he could not get the girls to tell him what the angel had said, so overcome were they by the holiness of the encounter. “The Angels' words sank deeply into our souls like a gleaming torch, showing us Who God is, what is His love for us, and how he wants us to love Him too; the value of sacrifice and how it pleases Him; how He receives it for the conversion of sinners. That is why from that moment we began to offer Him whatever mortified us.” †

COMO LUCÍA RELATÓ, los niños fueron afectados profundamente por esta aparición del mensajero celestial: “No sé por qué, pero la aparición de nuestra Señora produjo en nosotros efectos completamente diferentes de las visitaciones del ángel. Sentimos en ambos casos la misma felicidad íntima, paz y alegría, pero en vez de la postración física que el ángel impuso, nuestra Señora trajo un sentimiento de expansión y libertad; y en vez de esta aniquilación en la presencia divina, sólo deseamos regocijarnos en nuestra alegría. No hubo dificultad para hablar cuando Nuestra Señora se apareció; hubo más de mi parte un deseo de comunicar". Los tres pastorcillos habían encontrado a un ser celeste que, en su naturaleza puramente espiritual, comunicó a ellos algo de la impresionante santidad y de la trascendencia de Dios Todopoderoso. “Sus palabras se hundieron tan profundamente en nuestras mentes que nunca las olvidamos, y aun después solíamos pasar largos períodos de tiempo arrodillados repitiéndolas, a veces hasta que nos caíamos de tan agotados”. Más adelante ese mismo año de 1916, en el verano, los niños recibieron una segunda aparición del ángel, cuando jugaban en el calor del día. Lucía relata: “De repente vimos al mismo ángel cerca de nosotros. ‘¿Qué hacen? ¡Ustedes deben orar! ¡Orar! Los corazones de Jesús y María tienen diseños misericordiosos para ustedes. Deben ofrecer sus oraciones y sacrificios a Dios, el Altísimo.' “‘¿Pero, cómo debemos sacrificar?’ pregunté.” ‘En todos los sentidos, puedes ofrecer sacrificio a Dios en reparación por los pecados por los cuales es ofendido, y de súplica por los pecadores. De esta manera, traerá la paz a nuestro país, ya que soy su ángel de la guarda, el Ángel de Portugal. Sobre todo, aguante y acepte con paciencia los sufrimientos que Dios le enviará.' Los niños fueron, una vez más, profundamente afectada por la magnificencia e impresionante santidad de Dios, comunicado a través del Ángel de Portugal. El próximo año Francisco sólo podía ver a las apariciones, pero no podía oír las palabras dichas por el ángel o por nuestra señora. Al intentar como pudiera, no podía hacer que las niñas le dijeran lo que el ángel les había dicho ya que fueron superados por la santidad del encuentro. “Las palabras del ángel se hundieron profundamente en nuestras almas como una antorcha reluciente, mostrándonos quién es Dios, lo que es su amor por nosotros, y cómo él quiere que lo amemos a él también; el valor del sacrificio y cómo le agrada; cómo lo recibe para la conversión de pecadores. Es por eso que desde ese momento comenzamos a ofrecerle todo lo que nos mortificaba.” †
