A Survey of Andean Ascents Part II. Chile and Argentina E v e l io E c h e v a r r ía C .

I

ncluded in this work are the Andean areas that have registered the oldest high mountain ascents in the history of mountaineering, dating back to before the 16th century, when the Inca and Atacameñan Indians climbed peaks over 22,000 feet in the northern deserts of the two Andean countries here reviewed. Besides, modern moun tain clim bing was being practiced here at the beginning of the present century; therefore, with such long activity, only first ascents are often listed. However, all the ascents accomplished in areas visited only by sporadic expeditions are listed whenever possible. Ascents through the year 1960 are given. The writer cannot close these lines without thanking Mr. H. Adams Carter for his participation in this work and for his guidance toward its completion. Besides, thanks are due to Señor V. Arko, Argentina, for advice on the Bariloche-Les Alerces district, and to the American Alpine Club and the Appalachian Mountain Club for the use of their libraries, and to the Chilean Federación de Andinismo for supplying valuable infor mation. This second part of the survey has again been compiled from moun taineering and scientific literature as w ell as from correspondence and conversations with mountaineers. The initials p .c . stand for personal communication ; other abbreviations follow.

The general plan of this S u rv ey is the same as that of Part I, published in this Jo u rn a l in 1962. It should again be noted that a few omissions have been corrected by the insertion of an item with a letter attached to the number of the ascent, such as 469a. The letter has no significance and there is no particular connection between mountains bearing the same number. The writer again would welcome a d d itio n s and c o r r e c tio n s to be sent to him c/o American Alpine Club, 113 East 90th Street, New York 28, N. Y.

CHILEAN ANDES and PEAKS on the FRONTIER The Andes of Chile are simply classified, for mountaineering purposes, in Northern Andes or Puna, Central Andes, Southern Andes, Patagonian Andes and Tierra del Fuego. Peaks on the Peruvian border have been reviewed in the Peruvian chapter of its Cordillera Occidental. Peaks on the Bolivian and Argentinian borders have been included in this chapter. Northern Andes (Puna) This area of high volcanic peaks was populated by the Inca and Ataca meñan people; since the mountains were technically easy it is certain nowadays that a number of very high peaks were ascended by them, par ticularly by the latter. Further, more ascents were accomplished by local miners in the late 1800’s. First ascents, therefore, must be ascertained by a careful check of the mountain tops before being claimed. 438.
