The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger Not too long ago, Travis Rieder, of the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University, stated that the "climate crisis is a reproductive justice crisis." How dare people have babies which will grow up to become consumers of non-renewable materials, which will also harm global warming, or climate change, or whatever? The original sin of the human race is this: "we inflict the child on the world, and inflict the world onto the child." The child gets infected with human self-importance (species arrogance) and could care less about cutting off the limb on which it sits (destroying the planet). These are unpleasant imponderables, indeed. In addition, he is convinced that people wouldn't be doing all this bad stuff if they really had "choice." But, he says, people don't really have "choice" over reproduction, given so many pressures today (so more access to abortion and is needed, and more social approval for just not procreating). Similarly, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called it a "legitimate question" whether we should have children at all in an age of looming climate disasters." Is it okay, she wonders, to still have children? These indeed are weighty questions. Yet many societies have very low fertility rates (2.1 children per woman is required to keep the population stable, but rates as low as 1.1 are found). These countries face an aging population with no workforce base for social security but to promote immigration. However, as some European nations are noting, their language and cultural identity will disappear in the not too distant future. Countries like Hungary are, on the other hand, promoting pro-family policies: generous loans for first-time home buyers, early retirement for mothers of four or more children, and so on. In the wake of these changes, marriages have gone up by 43% and divorce rates dropped by almost 25%. Back in 1968 Paul Ehrlich (in a three-week writing frenzy) wrote the book The Population Bomb, with dire predictions that really never came true. Around the same time Garrett Hardin wrote "The Tragedy of the Commons" (Science, 1968). The "commons" means a pasture or forest or farming area where no one "owns" anything, but all may use it. The "tragedy" of the commons, where there is "freedom," is that some will reap excessive benefits for themselves, so that their short-term greed occurs at the expense of others, and has the ultimate long-term effect of destroying the resource itself. This is inevitable because each person attempts to expand his tribe relentlessly (reproduction and accumulation), and that is the "tragedy" of each seeking his own self-interest. Hardin felt that the world had enough resources for about 50 million people. The rest of the six or seven billion of us need to disappear, for good. Of course, the environmental impact of one American was perhaps 10 times that of a baby in India (1974), which provided the opening "people everywhere" scenario in Ehrlich's book. On the other hand, India and China are now rapidly moving toward American-style consumption patterns (and competing mightily for non-renewable resources, like oil). Some critics of Hardin proposed that the "commons" resource can be preserved by allowing private property, where the owner will work to sustain his piece. Others noted that the terim "commons" referred to community-owned grazing area, which could be ruined if not managed. Hardin should have called it "tragedy of the open-access commons." Eilnor Ostrom received a Nobel Prize in economics for demonstrating in "Governing the Commons" how local communities were in fact able to do sustainable regulation without top-down regulations. Obviously, the universe, and the earth, are finite. But what if new humans can find new sources of energy, or do better at using renewable resources? Is the universe itself a resource indefinitely renewable, for sustaining life, even human life? Is there a life beyond this life that does not consume limited global resources? Does Easter hope in the resurrection enable us to live more simply, rather than "Eat, drink, be merry, for tomorrow we die"? What about "poverty, chastity, obedience, for the sake of the kingdom"? That's directly opposed to Hardin's idea that each will extend his tribe in order to extend his power in order to grab more than his share of the commons. He also felt that the resources of the commons were static, and that increased numbers were on a collision course with even minimum pieces of pie to go around to each. Here we call to mind the two siblings arguing about dessert at table. The last in line got the smallest piece, and told the first to be polite, when selecting his piece. So the younger asked him, "Which would you take, if you had first pick?" The older said, "I'd be polite and take the smaller one." His brother responded, "OK, you've got the piece you want!"
