The days are getting longer – it is the beginning of Lent. Disciples of Jesus are human beings who have chosen to live under the “discipline” of Jesus Christ, who practice self-discipline, denial of self, and desire for God and their neighbor. We are inheritors of a great “apostolic” tradition, of belief in a particular way of Holy Scripture, the Creeds, the value of Bishops, and the desire to be one with our fellow Christians and other human beings (The Chicago -Lambeth Quadrilateral, BCP pp. 876-878). Our Bishop, Greg Rickel, has every year suggested a book for the Diocese of Olympia to read for Lent. This year he is suggesting the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). The way to do this is to take your BCP and undertake to touch every page from the front to the back. Not read, just touch. Inevitably you will want to stop and read through something that catches your eye. For Sunday Topics during Lent, starting February 18, at 11:45, every Sunday until Holy Week (Palm Sunday March 25), I will offer time to reflect on what you are finding in the BCP. In the BCP reside what we believe in the Episcopal Church. We follow an ancient discipline called lex orand i, lex credend: We pray our beliefs. The BCP is also formed by the Benedictine rule of ora et labora: prayer and work, a healthy cycle of human life in relationship with God. Come in at any time with your observation to share, your question to ask, and your curiosity to be satisfied. You will learn what the Episcopal way of living under God’s discipline is made of. Rev. FEBRUARY 2018 FEBRERO 2018 Los días se hacen más largas – es el comienzo de Cuaresma. Los discípulos de Jesús son seres humanos que han escogido vivir bajo la disciplina de Jesucristo, que practican auto-disciplina, auto-negación, y deseo de Dios y sus prójimos. Somos herederos de una gran tradición “apostólica”, de la creencia de una manera particular en las Sagradas Escrituras, Los Credos y el valor de Obispos, y el deseo de ser reunido con nuestros compañeros cristianos y otros seres humanos (El Cuadrilátero Chicago-Lambeth, LOC pág. 771-772). Nuestro Obispo, Greg Rickel, cada año ha sugerido un libro a la Diócesis de Olympia para leer durante Cuaresma. Este año sugiere el Libro de Oración Común (LOC). La manera de hacerlos es tomar su LOC y embarcarse a tocar cada página, desde el principio hasta el fin. No leer, sino tocar. Inevitablemente algo te llame la atención y leerás una parte. Para los domingos en Cuaresma, a partir del 18 de febrero, a las 11:45 hasta Semana Santa (Domingo de Ramos es 25 de marzo) ofreceré tiempo para reflexionar sobre lo que encuentren en el LOC. El LOC es donde reside lo que creemos en la Iglesia Episcopal. Seguimos una disciplina antigua llamada lex orandi, lex cred end i: lo que oramos contiene lo que creemos. El LOC también fue formado bajo la disciplina Benedictina de ora et labora: orar y trabajar, un ciclo saludable de la vida humana en relación con Dios. NUEVO AMANECER La conferencia Nuevo Am anecer se lleva cabo en el campamento de la Iglesia Episcopal en Kanuga el 27-30 de agosto. La conferencia equipa a los participantes con las herramientas y el apoyo para conectar con la comunidad latina/hispana. SL2 ha enviado Ernesto Zurita, Marlene Pérez y Lee

OPORTUNIDADES EN CUARESMA Cuaresma comienza el 14 de febrero con Miércoles de Ceniza. La noche antes, martes el 13 de febrero vamos a preparar nuestra fiesta de panqueques, chorizos y huevos. Nuestra tradición es colorear los panqueques. Para lanzar la comida, les invitamos a ayudar, o en la preparación, o para servir la comida, o después para limpiar. Traigan sus niños para encender las Palmas del año pasado para las Cenizas. También, vamos a enterar las Aleluyas durante Cuaresma. Miércoles de Ceniza, 14 de febrero, ofrecemos dos misas para el comienzo de Cuaresma: A las doce 12:00 en inglés y a las 7:00 PM bilingüe (inglés y español). Se hace la solemne exhortación de observar una Santa Cuaresma. Se ofrece las cenizas. Comenzando viernes, 16 de febrero, a las doce y quince (12:15) se ofrece las devociones del Vía Crucis. Las devociones continúan cada viernes hasta Viernes Santo, el 30 de Marzo. Acompáñenos para estas devociones.

Meta 2: Expandir Programas Sociales ESTACIÓN DE INVIERNO Comenzamos otro invierno abriendo las puertas a las 7:30am con el programa para servicio a los necesitados cuando las temperaturas bajan menos de 32o. A esa hora pueden llegar los que duermen a la intemperie toda la noche y no tienen refugios. Pueden venir a comer y tomar algo caliente. Tenemos varias personas que cocinamos y proveemos sopa caliente. Estaría bien ofrecerlo por más días pero los voluntarios son limitados. Sería bien que hubiera más por supuesto. Por ahora lo que ofrecemos es tan apreciado por las personas quienes pasan frio y duermen bajo el viento y la lluvia. El tiempo que pasan en un lugar seco les ayuda a tolerar mucho más el clima. VOLUNTARIOS PARA AYUDAR EN EL REFUGIO DE HOMBRES 25 FEB-3 MARZO, 2018 Desde el año 2005 de San Luke’s ~ San Lucas ha provisto voluntarios para ayudar en refugio de hombres sin hogar. En el 2018 ayudaremos en la semana del 25 de febrero al 3 de marzo en la iglesia St Paul Lutheran en Franklin en el centro de Vancouver. Hay tres turnos de 4-5 horas cada una de las 7 noches. Los voluntarios reciben instrucciones claras sobre lo que debe hacer en cada turno. No se necesita experiencia . Por favor, ver a P. Jaime después de los servicios para inscribirse en un turno.

PROGRAMA DE AYUDA A LOS NECESITADOS Para mí, el comienzo del año es tiempo de reflexión, Tiempo para ver las bendiciones, frustraciones, logros cumplidas, errores hechos, y la presencia de Dios. Como voluntarios durante el día en el programa para los más necesitados se puede ver todo esto en solo un día. Un hombre mayor vino un día y dijo que le comentaron que aquí podía obtener comida y ropa. Él estaba llorando cuando nos dijo que es la primera vez que está sin hogar. Ha desarrollado una infección en sus huesos y tuvo que estar hospitalizado por un tiempo. Cuando estaba en el hospital se dio cuenta que lo habían desalojado de su apartamento. Ahora está viviendo en su almacén. Gracias a la generosidad de nuestra congregación pudimos darle almuerzo, comida para el camino, calcetines, guantes, sombrero y boleto para el autobús. Él estaba muy agradecido por las cosas y por el apoyo emocional. Un hombre joven vino y claramente se veía que duerme en la calle y necesitaba suministros. Pudimos ayudarle con una mochila, ropa calientita, pase de autobús, zapatos, calcetines y almuerzo. Las semanas siguientes tuvo días buenos y otros no tan buenos. Eventualmente decidió regresar a su casa y recibir tratamiento. Se notaba su júbilo basado en la esperanza por un futuro mejor. SAN LUCAS– WHAT MINISTERIO Y también tengo otras ovejas que no son de este redil; aquellas también debo traer, y oirán mi voz; y habrá un rebaño, y un pastor. Juan 10:16 Dieciocho mujeres están dentro del rebaño de St. Luke’s ~ Lucas que se ha creado para ellas. Están protegidas de los elementos humanos y ambientales por unas horas cada día. Recientemente la directora de WHAT, Cassie Sorensen, describió una de nuestras historias exitosas. “Nuestra residente ha estado sin vivienda por 7 años. Ha estado batallando con problemas diagnosticados de salud mental. Cuando llego a WHAT no tenía propuesta para vivienda. No tenía Buena relación con su hija y no había contactado a su familia por más de 10 años. Ella batallaba con experiencias traumáticas por haber vivido en la calle y regularmente sufría de ataques de ansiedad. Mientras las trabajadoras de su caso trabajaban con ella para enrolarla en cada programa de vivienda que pudieran pensar, nosotros también trabajábamos con ella en reducir el impacto y daño que su salud mental le había causado en sus relaciones. Después de tiempo y con apoyo ella pudo contactar y hablar con su hija. Ahora están en contacto semanalmente y trabajando en reconstruir su relación. También fue reencontrada con su hermana y su cuñado. También se involucró en terapia terapéutica para reducir sus ataques de pánico y ansiedad. Estamos muy emocionados que a finales de Noviembre recibimos noticias de que ha sido aceptada en un programa de vivienda. Yeyy!!” Es muy gratificante saber que St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas ha tomado una pequeña parte en esta historia exitosa. Si sientes el llamado de hacer más, así es como puedes hacerlo: Donar a el programa WHAT por medio del programa Share por medio de su website o por correo con tu donativo. Trabajadores de caso usaran tu donativo para necesidades específicas como gasolina, pases para el camión etc. O ayudando a residentes a acomodar su nueva casa. Por $50 las mujeres pueden comprar artículos para su vivienda. En ocasiones necesitan un camión de mudanza para llevar sus cosas que cuesta $45. Muchas de ellas no pueden cubrir este costo. Esta clase incluye consejos de cómo cocinar de 3-4 diferentes platillos con poca carne. Las mujeres que están programadas para moverse pronto estarán invitadas. SE OFRECEN BAUTISMOS En Marzo 31, 8PM la gran Vigilia de Pascua y en Abril 1, Domingo de Pascua, 8AM, 10AM o 1PM si esta interesado en bautizarse o a algún miembro de su familia, por favor contacte la oficina de la parroquia o al Rev. Jaime.

HACE FRIO AFUERA En 1877, la Cofradía de St. Luke’s dice que “la madera se compraba por $2.50 por cierta cantidad específica, pero un miembro dijo que su esposo vendía a $2.00 la misma cantidad”. Solemos olvidar que la única manera de mantenerse calientes era quemando madera. Los rectes de San Lucas y los parroquianos experimentaron inviernos muy fríos, y necesitaban lo caliente de un buen fuego en la chimenea o caldera de la iglesia. Ha habido “malos” invierno localmente, con tormentas, nieve, y hielo, seguidos de muchos otros años “Buenos”. Fue un año malo lleno de nieve cuando el P. McCarty llego en 1853, y muchos se preguntaban cómo podía transportarse de Vancouver a Portland cada semana. Lo peor pudo haber pasado de enero a febrero en 1862, cuando la nieve y el hielo duró por 60 días. En ese entonces, St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas solo tenía que mantener caliente el cuarto pequeño, y probablemente solamente los Domingos. En el invierno de 1885 los ríos se congelaron con hielo que los puertos tuvieron que cerrar, y los trenes que venían del este, norte y sur no pudieron pasar por 3 semanas. Debe de haber sido un tiempo muy difícil para vivir. El invierno de 1888 trajo una tormenta que azotó con vientos muy fuertes, y se extendió por el Noroeste. Después se comprobó que fue causado por un volcán en el Sureste de Asia arrojando carbón en la atmosfera. Se puede leer en las minutas de la junta parroquial que repetidamente se compraron ciertas cantidades de madera, con una cantidad que aumenta pero el precio fue estable de $4.00. Conforme la iglesia fue creciendo y el edificio se hizo más grande, los eventos aumentaron donde se necesitaba mantener caliente. Es probable que todavía se utilizara un sistema de calefacción con madera cuando la iglesia se incendió. Afortunadamente nuestro sistema de calefacción ha mejorado. NOTAS DEL SALÓN DE MÚSICA El pianista Mike Horsfall regresa a St. Luke-San Lucas a dirigir nuestro servicio de Jazz vespertino el sábado, Febrero 3 a las 6PM con un invitado especial Allan Mair. Alan es un especialista en instrumentos de viento quien toca regularmente el saxofón y ha tocado con nosotros anteriormente al igual que Mary Sue Tobin, John Nastros, y David Evans. Por favor acompáñenos a recibir a Allan en nuestro “famoso salón de Jazz de la Parroquia”. El servicio de la Oración Vespertina se llena de estándar de jazz y provee una buena oportunidad para que nuestra comunidad cante, ore, una homilía y salmos litúrgicos. No se celebrará la eucaristía en este servicio así que nos da la oportunidad de invitar confortablemente a cualquier miembro de nuestra comunidad. ASEGURANZA DE SAUL: La Junta Parroquial voto a favor de hacer un manual del empleado compuesto con normas diocesanas para la aseguradora de cobertura dental. 2018 PRESUPUESTO: La j unta parroquial presento un balance del presupuesto para el 2018. Gracias a toda su generosidad con sus promesas, y el arduo trabajo de nuestro tesorero, Doug Goodlett. NOMINACIONES PARA DELEGADOS: Este año la convención diocesana será en octubre 26-27 en hotel Double Tree en el aeropuerto Sea-Tac. Necesitamos dos hombres y una mujer para llenar el contingente asignado. NOMINACIONES PARA LA JUNTA PARROQUIAL: Beth Femling, Michelle Hamann, y Jill McClellan son candidatos para la Junta Parroquial del 2018-2021. Cuenta Corriente: El presupuesto de Ingresos termino en el año en $21,950 sobre lo que estimamos. Desembolso: Después de todo el desembolso en el 2017 termino bajo presupuesto por $5,047. Por segundo año consecutivo terminamos el año con un balase positivo. Esto lo anticipamos porque teníamos posiciones presupuestados pero no fueron llenadas. Planeando el presupuesto para 2018 la junta parroquial sabia de estos fondos anticipados y dejo la promesa como estaba. De cualquier manera, los costos salariales, beneficios, y utilidades continúan aumentando. La campaña de promesa excedió nuestras expectaciones, y como resultado hay pocas reducciones a nuestros ministerios y programas Sin el servicio de Navidad por causa de el mal clima, las donaciones han sido dispersas, pero por nuestra generosidad de nuestros feligreses, contribuciones que hicieron casi como si el Servicio se hubiera oficiado. Contribuciones que son constantes. Comentarios Adicionales: La propuesta del presupuesto 2018 incluye fondos para el cuidado pastoral, una categoría B salarial aumenta por el aumento de nuestra congregación, Nuevo soporte financiar para el asistente del rector, el P. Dennis Cole, un tres porciento de aumento en el salario de trabajadores y un pequeño aumento de apoyo para nuestro música y el programa del albergue WHAT, y mantenimiento de nuestras antiguas instalaciones. Habiendo dicho esto, lo que no ha sido financiado para el 2018 son la posición de Coordinador de Jóvenes y Asistente de la Administradora de la Parroquia y una reducción en el financiamiento de la conferencia en Tennessee. NUEVO AMANECER The biennial conference to equip participants with the tools and resources to support and spiritually connect with the Latino/Hispanic community is the purpose of this national conference of the Episcopal Church. SPANISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE: IDIAM (Instituto de Español de la Iglesia Anglicana de México = “Spanish institute of the Anglican Church of Mexico”). It is located in Cuernavaca, capitol of Mexico’s Morelos state. It is sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of Cuernavaca, and held in their diocesan compound. Father Jaime started the Instituto in 2003. It is a total-immersion course in Spanish culture, language, dance, and cuisine. The 2018, dates are August 4- 18. The program is limited to 18 persons, at $1,800 each. Stu and Catherine Hennessey took part in the Instituto last year. They liked it well enough to return this year, Lizzy will join them. Rev. Jaime

So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” John 10:16 I love the visual and spiritual connections between this verse and St. Luke’s ~San Lucas’s Women’s Shelter. As of this date we have sheltered 25 women. Of those women: 2 have exited to permanent housing, 18 are still with us, and 5 have exited to other places – 2 to the street due to an inability to adhere to program expectations, 2 to Homestead on a shelter transfer (physical illness made it too difficult to be outside all day), and 1 to a treatment program. Unfortunately the shelter has not received funding to be open 24 hours a day; however we recently have been given a $10,000 grant to work to improve and meet the shelter’s needs. This grant is from the Ed and Dollie Lynch Fund, a charitable fund of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. Jamie and John Mathieu have continued to improve our shelter space by converting the janitor’s closet into a mini kitchen/storage area. DAYTIME OUTREACH For me the beginning of a new year is a time of reflection. A time to look at blessings, frustrations, hopes

fulfilled, mistakes made, and signs of God’s presence. As volunteers for Daytime Outreach we may see all of these in just one shift. An older gentleman came in one day and said he heard we provide food and clothing. He had tears in his eyes when he explained that he had never been homeless. He had developed a bone infection and had to be hospitalized for some time. When he was released from the hospital he discovered that he had been evicted from his apartment. He is now living in his storage unit. Due to the generosity of this congregation we were able to give him a lunch, groceries, socks, gloves, hat, and a bus pass. He was grateful for the material goods and the emotional support. A young man came in and was clearly new to the streets and in need of supplies. We were able to set him up with a backpack, warm clothing, bus pass, shoes, socks, and a lunch. In the following weeks he had some good days and some not so good days. He eventually decided to return home and to seek treatment. His joy and hope for a better future were palpable. Each time I finish a shift there, I leave with a profound sense of having made a difference, and a renewed sense of gratitude for my warm and comfortable home. I am so very thankful to be in a position to be the "hands and feet" of Jesus for a group of individuals who are struggling at the edge of life. I always look forward to my next opportunity to serve. WINTER WARMING STATION WHO – Winter Housing Overflow WHO is in DESPERATE need of compassionate hearts. Although St. Luke’s week is not till the end of February, volunteer staffing is at crisis level now! The St. Paul’s shelter, 13th and Franklin St., is open 6pm to 8 am the following morning: shifts are 4 hours, except for the 2 hour shift, 6am-8am. The shelter residents are very grateful, polite, and respectful. In my 2 seasons of volunteering for WHO, I have never felt unsafe or disrespected. The role reminds me of being a house parent in a well behaved fraternity. This is likely the easiest volunteer " gig" out there- no heavy chores- the 24 men sign up for a chore as they enter for the evening, after passing a breathalyzer test. In an evening I might help serve a crock pot meal, supervise the shower schedule, or do a load of laundry. I always bring crocheting or have something to work on, as there is a lot of " relaxing time" towards the end of the 6-10pm shift. If you work any of the late shifts, it is all "down time"- bring a book! Volunteers are there to be a friendly and calm-

We’ve begun another winter of opening at 7:30AM on outreach days when 7am temp is forecasted to be at or below 32o. That timing catches people who are leaving overnight shelters and brings unsheltered people inside for warm-up drinks and food. We have several cooks who provide soup. It would be cool to offer this more days, but volunteer time is limited. That could increase, of course. For now, what we offer is much appreciated by people who routinely endure cold and wind and rain. Warm dry hours help raise the tolerance level, a lot! Thank you for supporting this ministry. LENTEN OFFERINGS Lent begins on Wednesday, February 14th. The night before, Tuesday, February 13, we will have a pancake supper to mark Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras), the last blow out before the disciplines of Lent. Traditionally we have colored pancakes, sausage, and eggs. To put on the supper you are invited to help arrange the event, help during serving or help cleaning up. Bring your young pyromaniacs to burn up the Palms from last year for the Ashes. We will also be burying the Alleluias for Lent. On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, we will offer two services for marking the beginning of Lent: 12:00 will be in English, and 7:00 pm will be a bilingual (SpanishEnglish) service. The solemn exhortation to keep a Holy Lent will be read, and ashes will be offered. Starting Friday, February 16, at Noon there will be a devotion of the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis). The devotions will happen every Friday until Good Friday, March 30. Please join us for the devotions.

WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP All women are welcome to join us for our February monthly session on Saturday, February 10 when we will gather from 10AM to 12PM. This will be a time to come together and expand our spiritual experiences with a feminine view. As part of taking action to help those in the margins of our society, we are requesting donations of feminine sanitary products to donate to the Outreach Ministry. Revenues: revenues collected ended the year $21,950 ahead of our year-end predictions. Expenses: overall expenses at the end of the 2017 were under budget by $5,047. For the second year in a row we expected to end the year with a positive balance, and we did. This was anticipated because two budgeted positions were budgeted but not filled. In planning the 2018 budget the vestry knew of these anticipated funds and thus set a “stay put” pledge drive. However, costs for salaries, benefits, and utilities continue to climb. The pledge drive exceeded expectations, and as a result, there are very few reductions to our ministries and programs. Without an evening Christmas service due to weather, donations should have been very sparse, but due to the generosity of parishioners, contributions were made almost as if the service had occurred. Congratulations to all who have contributed so much, and so often.

St. Luke’s rectors and parishioners experienced some frigid winters, and needed the warmth of a good fire in the stove or furnace at church. There have been a number of “bad” winters locally, with several “good” years followed by a bad year of storms, snow, and ice. There was a bad year of snow when Rev. McCarty arrived in 1853, so one wonders how he got back and forth between Vancouver and Portland each week. The worst may have been January – February in 1862, when there was a duration of snow and ice for 60 days. Back then, St. Luke’s only had to heat their small one room church near the Fort, and probably only did so on Sundays. In the Winter of 1885 the rivers were frozen or clogged with ice, the ports were closed, and the trains from the East, North, and South didn’t run for 3 weeks. It must have been a difficult time to live. The Winter of 1888 saw a gigantic storm hit the upper Midwest, and to some extent the Northwest. It was later found to have been partially caused by a volcano in Southeast Asia spewing carbon into the atmosphere. Research of Vestry Minutes repeatedly show purchases of cords of wood, with the quantity increasing but the price staying at around $4.00 a cord. As the church grew, new and larger buildings were added, as were events that needed heating. It is probable that we were still using wood for heating when our second church caught fire and burned down. Fortunately our heating systems have greatly improved. Here’s hoping that we don’t suffer another of those terrible winters of the past. Pat Lawless, Parish Archivist and Historian

Allan is a woodwind specialist who plays regularly with saxophone soloists who have played here before, including Mary Sue Tobin, John Nastos, and David Evans. Please come and welcome Allan into our own “Parish Jazz Hall of Fame.” The evening service is anchored by jazz standards and provides a good oppor-

tunity for community singing, prayers, a homily, and the chanting of psalms. The eucharist is not celebrated at this service so it is an ideal time to bring unchurched people comfortably into our community. LUNCH BUNCH The February Lunch Bunch will meet at noon on Tuesday, February 13th. Joseph Ziemba will present a program that he gave to the Clark County Master Gardeners entitled “Thomas Jefferson – Farmer”. Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, President of the U.S., Ambassador to France, Architect and book collector was most of all a man of the earth and wanted to be known as a farmer above all. He wrote to Painter Charles Willson Peale “I have thought that if heaven had given me a choice, it should have been on a rich spot of earth, and near good market for the productions of the garden. No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden”. He nurtured 330 varie-

Additional Comments: The proposed 2018 budget includes funds for pastoral care, a category B salary raise for the rector due to increased size of our congregation, new financial support for the assistant rector, The Reverend Dennis Cole, a three percent salary increase for hourly employees, a small increase to outreach, support of our music and WHAT Women’s Shelter programs, and increased maintenance of our aging facilities. This being said, what has not been funded for next year are two key positions; youth coordinator and assistant to the parish administrator; and, a reduction in the funding of a conference in Tennessee. Thanks to all who have pledged for 2018. It is not too late to pledge. Currently we have 115 units promising $391,343 which is greater than anticipated by $33,343. A commendation is in order for those who have made full pre-pledge payments. This helps us meet our first quarter expenses without borrowing from savings. VESTRY SUMMARY -- January 2018 WHAT SHELTER: The parish has a $10,000 grant from the Community Fund for shelter-related expenses. IMMIGRATION: The diocese provided help for two of our Hispanic members: they are back with their families. INSURANCE COVERAGE: The Vestry voted to make the Employee Handbook comply with Diocesan guidelines for health and dental insurance coverage. 2018 BUDGET: The Vestry approved a balanced budget for 2018. Thanks to all our generous pledgers, and to the hard work of our Treasurer, Doug Goodlett. DELEGATE NOMINATIONS: Diocesan Convention this year will be on October 26-27 in the Double Tree hotel at Sea-Tac airport. We need two men and one woman to fill our allotted contingent. VESTRY NOMINATIONS: Beth Femling, Michelle Hamann, and Jill McClellan are candidates for the 2018-2021 Vestry class. Persons may also be nominated at the Annual Parish Meeting (January 28 at 11:30 a.m.) INTERIM HELP: Kris Lawless filled in as Parish Administrator when Erika Carranza had pneumonia. She is also producing the Annual Report. PRESIDING BISHOP: The Most Reverend Michael Curry will be in the Diocese of Olympia on July 14-17.
