Communicating with Your Texting Teen Is it tempting to communicate with your kids by sending them a text message? Those tapping thumbs tend to edit out attitude or an angry voice, and may improve parent/teen chat. Does editing face-to-face communication affect social skills and the parent/child relationship? Join a lively discussion of this issue that families of teens are facing for the first time!

A teen’s point of view:

Parents sound off:

“I am a LOT more open with my mom now that we text. . i text my mom when im having trouble at school, friend troubles, health problems.” [sic]

“children are getting phones way too young; we are losing too much face-to-face contact . . . wake up, do we need to lose connection with our teens any more than we already do in the teen years?” Other parents recognize that some kids “tell me more via text than he ever did verbally. It’s been a great ‘private’ way for us to communicate - even texting him encouragement when I hear him having difficulty with his siblings. This is a totally unexpected benefit for us. (Note: this was not true with his older brother).”
