In Spaceship Earth

Como su admirado Buckminster Fuller, Norman Foster piensa en la Tierra como una nave que se desplaza por el espacio llevándonos a bordo, y de cuyo cuidado somos todos responsables. Si hay un hilo conductor que enhebra cincuenta años de profesión es precisamente la voluntad de hallar soluciones genéricas a problemas singulares, de manera que la innovación se ponga al servicio del uso eficaz de los recursos y la ocupación sostenible del planeta. En 1963, cuando Foster regresó de Estados Unidos para iniciar en Londres su vida profesional, la NASA puso en órbita el primer satélite geoestacionario, iniciando una nueva era en las telecomunicaciones, y enredando el globo en una tupida malla informativa que actúa como la red neuronal de nuestro mundo; medio siglo después, en 2013, la sonda Voyager 1 ha abandonado el sistema solar, convirtiéndose en el primer objeto fabricado por el hombre que lo hace, y enfrentándonos acaso a nuestra radical soledad en el universo. Los cincuenta años de la carrera de Foster, que se extienden en el tiempo histórico desde John F. Kennedy hasta el papa Francisco, y en el espacio geográfico desde Europa hasta las costas pacíficas de América o Asia, se celebran aquí con cincuenta obras y proyectos del siglo xxi. El joven arquitecto al que en 1968 fascinaba la foto de la Tierra desde el Apolo 8, y que en 1975 redactó un plan urbanístico sostenible en La Gomera para aplicar la técnica última a las necesidades primeras, es hoy el que da forma a los empeños visionarios de Richard Branson en el Spaceport America o de Steve Jobs en la sede futurista de Apple, y el que proyecta la construcción de bases lunares con impresoras 3D; pero el arquitecto de aeropuertos y rascacielos es también el que levanta en África escuelas elementales, el que diseña lugares de encuentro y símbolos compartidos, y el que revitaliza ciudades históricas y edificios patrimoniales con admirable silencio y discreción. El trayecto de la revista AV es más corto que el de Foster, pero desde nuestros inicios en 1985 hemos seguido su extraordinario recorrido con especial atención, documentando hasta 320 obras, proyectos y noticias en las tres publicaciones que editamos. La actual monografía, que es la más voluminosa realizada por AV hasta la fecha, es la tercera que se le dedica, y en ella nos hemos beneficiado de su colaboración continuada, desde las innumerables versiones de la lista de proyectos a incluir o su agrupación narrativa, y hasta el extenso artículo que abre el número con una cartografía puntual de sus influencias. Las anteriores monografías aparecieron en 1992 (AV 38, que recogía su obra desde 1986) y 1999 (AV 78, que cubría de forma sucinta toda su carrera), pero esta nota introductoria se ilustra con un dibujo de Focho publicado en 1991 en Arquitectura Viva, que resume bien, creo, el talante inventivo, exigente y optimista de este tripulante de la nave espacial Tierra.

Like his admired Buckminster Fuller, Norman Foster thinks of Earth as a spaceship that travels through space taking us on board, and for whose care we are all responsible. If there is a guiding thread for fifty years of work it is precisely the desire to find generic solutions to unique problems, so that innovation is placed at the service of the efficient use of resources and the sustainable occupation of the planet. In 1963, when Foster returned from the United States to begin his professional life in London, NASA launched the first geosynchronous satellite, ushering in a new era in telecommunications, and tangling the globe in a dense information mesh that functions as the neural network of our world; half a century later, in 2013, the Voyager 1 space probe has abandoned the Solar System, becoming the first manmade object to do so, and perhaps facing us with our radical solitude in the Universe. The fifty years of Foster’s career, spanning in history from John F. Kennedy to Pope Francis, and in geography from Europe to the Pacific coasts of America or Asia, are celebrated here with fifty works and projects of the 21st century. The young architect who was fascinated by the 1968 photograph of the Earth from Apolo 8, and who in 1975 drafted a sustainable master plan in La Gomera to apply the latest techniques to primary needs, today gives shape to the visionary endeavors of Richard Branson at Spaceport America or of Steve Jobs in the futuristic headquarters for Apple, and designs the construction of lunar settlements with 3D printers; but the architect of airports and skyscrapers also builds elemental schools in Africa, plans places of encounter and shared symbols, and revitalizes historic cities and heritage buildings with admirable silence and discretion. AV’s journey is shorter than Foster’s, but since 1985 we have followed his extraordinary itinerary with special attention, documenting up to 320 works, projects and news items in our three magazines. The current monograph, the longest we have ever printed, is the third devoted to him, and in this case we have profited from his continued collaboration, from the endless versions of the list of projects to be included to their narrative grouping, and up to the comprehensive article that opens the issue, in which he traces his map of influences. The previous monographs appeared in 1992 (AV 38, covering his work since 1986) and 1999 (AV 78, offering a brief review of his whole career), but this introduction is illustrated with a drawing by Focho published in 1991 in Arquitectura Viva, and which sums up well, I think, the inventive, demanding and optimistic mood of this crew member of spaceship Earth.
