Este año el Área Profesional del Bafici vuelve a ofrecerse como espacio en el que se cruzan los diversos actores del mundo del cine en una serie de mesas, encuentros y asesorías que, contra todo pronóstico, son cada vez más necesarias. Porque aquello que aprendimos ayer está cambiando ahora mismo y habrá que encontrar el modo de aplicarlo mañana. Pasa con las herramientas de filmación, pero también con los modelos de distribución, la crisis de la exhibición, las nuevas formas de financiar los proyectos y de crear interés en torno a ellos, aun antes de que se conviertan en películas. Todo cambia a cada momento, todo cambia muy rápidamente, salvo algo central: la pulsión del cine, las ganas de hacer películas y que esas películas encuentren un público. Por eso y porque es parte fundamental de nuestros deberes como anfitriones, el Área Profesional se pone al día, tiene respuestas y también piensa en nuevas preguntas (y esto, es justo decirlo, tampoco ha cambiado en los últimos años) y, un año más, le da una cálida bienvenida a Buenos Aires.

This year, Bafici’s Professional Area is, once more, the space in which diverse parties from the world of film gather in a series of roundtables, encounters and consultancies that, against all odds, become more and more of a necessity. Because what we have learnt yesterday is changing right now, and we’ll have to find a way of putting it into practice tomorrow. It happens with filming equipment, but also with the distribution models, the crisis in exhibition, the new ways of financing projects and creating interest around them, even before they become films. Everything changes all the time, everything changes quickly, except for something crucial: the drive of film, the will to make films and for those films to find an audience. Because of that, and also due to the fact that it’s a fundamental part of our duties as hosts, the Professional Area is putting itself up to date, has answers and also thinks of new questions (and this, it’s fair to say, also hasn’t changed in the last few years) and, once more, gives you a warm welcome to Buenos Aires.

FILMFEST HAMBURG FESTIVAL

Filmfest Hamburg es uno de los festivales más importantes de Alemania, cuya programación privilegia películas que no tienen distribución comercial en ese país. El festival cuenta con una sección dedicada a Iberoamérica llamada Vitrina, sección abierta a otros modelos narrativos y a un cine que apuesta por el riesgo formal y temático. Si bien el festival no tiene una competencia oficial, sí cuenta con una competencia transversal. Filmfest Hamburg is one of Germany’s most important film festivals, whose programming favors films that have no commercial distribution in Germany. The festival has a section called Vitrina, dedicated to Latin America and open to other narrative models and formally and thematically risqué films. Even though the festival does not have an official competition, it does have a transverse competition.

MOOOV FESTIVAL

MOOOV está arraigado en los festivales Cinema Novo (Brujas) y Open Doek (Turnhout). Su objetivo es proveer una experiencia audiovisual de alta calidad, proyectando películas de todas partes del mundo para una gran cantidad de público a través de Flandes, Bélgica, y seleccionando el mejor cine del mundo. MOOOV intenta ser un importante distribuidor independiente de cine arte y documentales. Se lleva a cabo a fines de abril en siete ciudades flamencas. MOOOV is rooted in the Cinema Novo (Bruges) and Open Doek (Turnhout) festivals. Its main goal is to provide a high-quality audiovisual experience, screening films from around the world for the widest audiences throughout Flanders, Belgium, and selecting the best world cinema. MOOOV intends to be an important independent distributor of arthouse films and documentaries. It takes place at the end of April in 7 Flemish cities.

Actualmente desarrolla dos nuevos proyectos de largometraje: Until the Way, de Davi Prietto, y Cologne, la ópera prima de Richard Tavares. También es productora de Plataform Session y de otras exhibiciones y retrospectivas de cine en Brasil. Paola Wink is producer and partner at Tokyo Filmes since 2009. FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE CINE DE VALDIVIA FESTIVAL

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia exhibe cine chileno e internacional en cuatro categorías competitivas: Largometraje Internacional, Largometraje Chileno, Cortometraje de Escuelas de Cine Latinoamericanas y Cortometraje Wallmapu-Los Ríos. Su programa no competitivo incluye retrospectivas históricas, focos de cineastas contemporáneos, cine político y de vanguardia. Además de una sección de cine para niños y sus familias, que cuenta con su propia competencia para obras latinoamericanas. The Valdivia International Film Festival shows Chilean and international films in four competitive categories: International Features, Chilean Features, Short Films from Latin American Film Schools, and WallmapuLos Ríos shorts. Its non-competitive program includes historical retrospectives, focuses on contemporary filmmakers, political and avantgarde films. Also, a section with films for children and their families, which has its own competition for Latin American works.

The Cali International Film Festival, held in Colombia, is an independent film festival. This year, it will carry out its sixth edition on October 9th through the 13th. Organizado por la Fundación Cine Posible, el festival promueve un cine independiente basado más en su vitalidad que en su presupuesto. Se celebra en septiembre en el pueblo de Villa de Leyva, fundado en 1572. Cuenta con una competencia internacional de cortos, una muestra de largometrajes, proyecciones al aire libre, un festival para niños y una convocatoria para proyectos en desarrollo de directores colombianos. Organized by the Cine Posible Foundation, the festival promotes independent films that rely more on their vitality than their budgets. It is held in September in the town of Villa de Leyva, founded in 1572. It has an international competition for short films, a feature film exhibit, outdoor screenings, a festival for children and a call for projects in development by Colombian directors.

This festival is a meeting place for making, distributing, exhibiting, watching, and discussing films; educational opportunities; a foundation for an informed appreciation of cinema among a non-specialist public; and a platform for collaboration among local, UK, and international film communities. EIFF shows fiction, documentary, experimental and animated features and shorts. Its 68th edition takes place June 18-29, 2014.

An institution that depends on the Government of Galicia (Spain), whose mission is safeguarding, preserving, and spreading the cinematic heritage. Apart from the screenings of its archive, it programs around twenty film seasons and 300 screenings throughout the year of classics as well as contemporary pictures. No es competitivo pero sí se elige la película más popular con el voto del público. Su fundador en 1975 y actual director es el colombiano Pepe Vargas. One of the most experienced and important Latin American film festivals in the US, it is already in its 30th edition. Always in search of material that represents its country of origin, from renowned filmmakers as well as newcomers. It is not competitive, but it does choose the most popular film through an audience vote. It was founded in 1975 by its current director, Colombia-born Pepe Vargas.

Brazilian-born Sandro Fiorin founded FiGa Films in Los Angeles in 2006 with Cuban-American partner Alex García, to discover and distribute Latin American content in North America, and represent it worldwide. La Sudestada fue fundada en 1999 por Nora Sack-Rofman, su directora y programadora. Su objetivo principal es difundir el cine argentino en París (proyecciones, presentaciones, conferencias y mesas redondas). Sus actividades, de ingreso gratuito, son el Festival (anual) y el Ciné-Club Argentin (mensual), que siempre cuentan con la presentación de Nora Sack-Rofman. Este año el festival se realizará del 14 al 23 de mayo. La Sudestada was founded in 1999 by Nora Sack-Rofman, its director and programmer. Its main goal is to spread Argentine cinema in Paris (screenings, presentations, conferences, and round tables). Its activities, which are free, are the Festival (annual) and the Cine Club Argentin (monthly), which are always presented by Nora Sack-Rofman. This year’s festival dates are May 14-23.

Este es el octavo año de Grainne Humphreys como directora artística del principal festival público de cine. Comenzó su carrera en educación cinematográfica, como docente y programadora para público joven. Trabajó en el cine independiente durante más de diecinueve años. Fue directora del Festival de Documentales Stranger Than Fiction y el Festival de Cine Francés de Dublín entre 2002 y 2007. Fue coeditora de Ireland into Film. También habla acerca del arte en radio y televisión. This is Grainne Humphreys’s eighth year as Artistic Director. She began her career in film education, teaching and programming for young audiences. She has worked in independent cinema for over nineteen years. She was the Director of both Stranger Than Fiction Documentary Festival and the Dublin French Film Festival from 2002-2007. She was Co-Editor of Ireland into Film. She also regularly broadcasts on the arts for both radio and television.

FICUNAM FESTIVAL

Ficunam es el Festival Internacional de Cine de la UNAM, festival que defiende enfáticamente el cine de autor y de vanguardia, y que tiene una competencia internacional con dos premios de 9.000 dólares para directores con no más de tres películas en su haber. El festival siempre ofrece retrospectivas: Darezhan Omirbaev, Edward Yang, Jonas Mekas, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Otar Iosseliani, Alain Guiraudie y Gustavo Fontán, junto a otras secciones no competitivas dedicadas al cine contemporáneo. Ficunam is the UNAM’s International Film Festival, a festival that defends auteur and avant-garde cinema emphatically, and which has an international competitive section with two 9,000-dollar awards for directors with no more than three features made. The festival always offers retrospectives: Darezhan Omirbaev, Edward Yang, Jonas Mekas, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Otar Iosseliani, Alain Guiraudie and Gustavo Fontán, among other non-competitive sections devoted to contemporary film.

The Uruguay International Film Festival has been organized by the Uruguayan Cinematheque for more than three decades. Es productor asociado de Parabellum, película dirigida por Lukas Rinner y producida por Nabis Filmgroup que integra el programa WIP en la presente edición del BAL. In 2012, Alex Piperno created La Pobladora Cine with the aim of producing his first film, Chico ventana también quisera tener un submarino, currently in development. The fact that he alternates his residence between Montevideo and Buenos Aires also draws him close to the co-production of other projects with Argentina. Por el Taller Colón de Análisis de Proyectos Cinematográficos –iniciativa que lleva quince ediciones consecutivas– pasaron los más reconocidos directores de América latina. TyPA también coproduce, junto al Bafici, el Buenos Aires Lab (BAL) desde sus comienzos. The TyPA/Cine programs have the main goal of being an incentive for the creative work from the new filmmakers of the region, as well as favoring the integration of their projects in the worldwide film industry. Some of the most renowned directors in Latin America attended the Colón Film Project Analysis Workshop, an initiative that has held fifteen consecutive editions so far. TyPA also co-produces, along with Bafici, the Buenos Aires Lab (BAL) since its beginnings.

INSTITUTO MULTIMEDIA DERHUMALC – IMD El IMD fue concebido como centro de investigación, producción audiovisual, docencia y difusión de las problemáticas del desarrollo humano. Su objetivo es promover un cine crítico que contribuya a la transformación social. Entre sus actividades se cuentan: la 16ª edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de Derechos Humanos y la 2ª edición del Festival Internacional de Cine Ambiental. The IMD was conceived as a center for the investigation, audiovisual production, teaching and spreading the quandaries of human development. Its main goal is to promote critical cinema that contributes to social transformation. Its activities include: the 16th edition of the Human Rights International Film Festival and the 2nd edition of the International Festival of Environmental Film.
