PARISH NEWS: St. Mary Church Pilgrimage, Pendleton A group of 32 from St. Mary’s in Pendleton traveled to the Portland Grotto on August 22nd (the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Memorial) to begin celebrating their 100th anniversary of the church cornerstone being laid. On September 8, 1912 (The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary) Bishop Charles O’Reilly, our founding Bishop, laid the cornerstone for St. Mary’s Church. The pilgrimage to the Grotto was very spiritual with prayers at 6:00 a.m. in the parking lot just before boarding a charter bus. “Praying the rosary and listening to a talk given by Father Bailey Clemens, our pastor, was the highlight of our bus ride to Portland,” said Karla Willman.

Volume 3, Number 21

St. Mary’s Pilgrimage continued Father Clemens celebrated Mass at 2:00 p.m. at the Grotto and afterwards they processed into the Chapel of Mary singing “Panis Angelicus”. They spent an hour in adoration, which included a prayer of Consecration to our Blessed Mother.

After arriving at the Grotto they enjoyed a tour of the grounds as well as learning the history of the Grotto and they enjoyed a lunch that was prepared by the Grotto staff.

At 3:30 p.m. they boarded our bus and headed home. Again, they prayed a rosary and enjoyed sharing the day’s experience together. They shared an evening meal together in The Dalles before returning home. “It was a perfect day for us all,” said Karla. As part of their Centennial Celebration, St. Mary’s Parish has gathered 245 family recipes into a cookbook called “A Taste of Heaven 100th Anniversary”. The cost of the cookbook is $12.00. If you are interested in purchasing one or more, please contact Karla Willman at Page 1 the parish office. (541) 276-3615.

FORWARD IN FAITH APPEAL Beginning this October, Pope Benedict has called the Catholic world to observe a Year of Faith in remembrance of two important anniversaries: the opening of the Second Vatican Council fifty years ago and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church twenty-five years ago. These two events profoundly affected the way we live our Catholic faith in the 21st century. The Year of Faith is a time to make the faith of the Church our own – to understand it more clearly and live it more truly.

As we approach the Year of Faith, then, let me pose three simple questions:

Al acercarnos al Año de la Fe, permítanme hacerles tres preguntas simples:

• Are you continuing to grow in faith? • Do you feel connected to those who share your faith? • Do you respond to God’s call to live your faith in love?

We will soon be mailing out an information packet to flesh out these matters more fully. Please take time to think about and pray about what you can do to forward the works of faith in our diocese in the year to come.

Forward In Faith

Avanzar en la Fe

This year’s Appeal is based on these questions. “Forward in Faith” will draw attention to three areas in particular that are crucial to the life of faith in this diocese: • welcoming a new generation of faith to change the

world; • providing new leaders in faith to shepherd God’s flock; • honoring those who have long served us faithfully.

- Matthew 4:21-22

- Mateo 4: 21-22

Honoring Those Who’ve Served Faithfully

Honrar a los que han servido fielmente

“We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?” - Matthew 19:27

"Nosotros lo hemos dejado todo y te hemos seguido. ¿Qué nos espera? " - Mateo 19:27

Moving Forward In Faith Together

Avanzando Juntos en la Fe

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN: There are many suitable strategies for helping assure the safety of our children. The Parishes and the Diocese is doing what they can but everyone in the Church needs to take an active role. Parents, particularly, must be engaged. Diocesan Statutes for the Protection of Children are available at Parish Offices as well as the Diocesan website: http://dioceseofbaker.org/protection_of_children.htm The persons to whom child abuse may be reported are located there. You may also contact the County Attorney or the Department of Human Services for help with the procedure to report suspected child abuse. The Diocese of Baker together with Praesidium, Inc. is pleased to offer this last training component of being in compliance with USCCB’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. In August, the teachers and staff of our five schools attended an inservice day where they were instructed in the use of this program. After this training session, along with the one held earlier in the year for our DREs and Youth Ministers we are ready to present it to the parents and children of our parishes this month. In addition, this program will be available in Spanish. For more information on the program log on to: http://www.praesidiuminc.com/ . Our children are a treasure and the future of our Holy, Catholic Church. Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to Me and do not hinder them.’ Let us pledge ourselves to love and protect our children as Jesus calls us to love one another.
