PARISH NEWS: St. Elizabeth of Hungary, John Day Newly-ordained Bishop Liam Carey visited St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in John Day on May 26 and 27. He concelebrated Masses with new Pastor, Father Albert Lakra, in John Day as well as at Missions St. Anne in Monument and St. Katherine in Dale/Long Creek. They welcomed Bishop Liam at a reception in the parish hall following the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass. All felt highly honored by his visit and wish him well in his new ministry.
PARISH NEWS: St. Patrick Church, Lakeview The weekend of July 13-15, St. Patrick Church will celebrate its Centennial with three days of Liturgy, Prayer and Fellowship. Friday at 5:00 p.m. there will be a Mass with Bishop Cary along with former Priests and parishioners. There will be a Parish Dinner after Mass. A “Parking Lot / Street” Community Celebration Party will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday there will be a Confirmation Mass at 9:00 a.m. Fr. Anthony Mbaegbu has extended a welcome invitation to all Diocesan parishioners to come and join in the celebration. The Parish Banner (left) was made for the Ordination of Bishop Liam Cary on May 18, 2012. PARISH NEWS: St. Thomas, Redmond Each year St. Thomas K-5 CCD students have an opportunity to enter the Oregon Right to Life Drawing Contest. Students take time off from their regular CCD classes to pray a rosary for life and to work on contest entries. This year’s theme was Every Child Deserves a Birthday. First Place entries were sent on to the state contest and although we did not place in the state contest, the children learned to express their ideas through their artwork. This year’s local winners are: Kindergarten: 1st Place: Carolina Gradilla, 2nd Place: Sean Eastham, 3rd Place: Elise Meyer. Grades 1 - 2: 1st Place: Sophia LaPora, 2nd Place: Hana Miyashita, 3rd Place: Anna Belding. Grades 3 - 4 - 5: 1st Place: Sophia Pierce, 2nd Place: Maria Gradilla, 3rd Place: Grace Chadwick. St. Thomas students in 4-5 grades also have an opportunity to enter the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Education Contest. The themes for the contest were "Inspiring Others to Grow" and "Planting Seeds of Faith." Students were given the opportunity to choose the categories of art, poetry and photography to express their ideas about the themes. First place winners were sent on to the state contest. The fourteen days from June 21, the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom” - a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power, St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. In these final days of this campaign, your prayers and witness for religious liberty are needed. YOUTH NEWS: St. Thomas, Redmond The LaPora children, Sophia, Owen, Josephine and Charlotte with Mommy Sarah and Nana (Great Grandma) Irene met with Woody Medeiros, manager of Grandma’s House, to present to her, for the Activities Support of their programs, the money the children had been collecting for a few months. Sophia decided on this project several months ago and involved the other siblings, who were very happy to be of assistance. So in about six months, they accumulated $73.50. Sophia left her bag there but asked that it be retrieved for filling up again. Their ages are 7 yrs, 5 yrs, 3 yrs, and baby Charlotte at 7 weeks
HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP: St. Pius X, Sacred Heart and St. Francis Cabrini 28 High School Youth Group members from St. Pius X, Sacred Heart and Bonanza participated in the 30 Hr Food Famine in April. St. Pius X in Klamath Falls sponsored the event. The youth had a great time learning about third world countries and the challenges these countries face each and every day trying to provide food, shelter, schooling and medical care for their families. Their fast started on Friday after lunch and they broke their fast by receiving the Eucharist during the Saturday evening Vigil Mass.
Part of their time was spent doing a canned food drive for St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry. The youth went knocking on doors for an hour and a half collecting items. They brought in a total of 910 items for their local St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at St. Pius X. One of the activities over the weekend included the youth having to provide a “meal ticket” for their Breakthe-Fast Meal that occurred after Mass. They were instructed to write something they got from the weekend. While there were many things written from the youth, two things seemed to be repeated over and over: #1 – I have never really stopped to think about what I had until this weekend. This weekend has taught me to be more appreciative of what I have and to not take it for granite. #2 – I never imagined that going 30 hours without food could be so much fun! I had a great experience and cannot wait to do it again next year.

DIOCESAN RETREAT CENTER NEWS: Leadership Camp Monday, July 16 7:00 p.m. to Friday, July 20 2:00 p.m. For Grades 11 and 12 plus Freshman in College. $50 per person. This is a camp where we train youth to be strong Catholic Christian Leaders in their lives, their families, and their parishes. They are taught how to lead ice breakers, small group sharing, meal prayers, make up skits and cheers, teach and pass on the faith, plus have a really good time. These youth then immediately put their new skills to use by committing themselves to help at the following Middle School Camp or the Upper Elementary Camp later in the summer.
