The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger

This year Fr Paolo Dayto will lead the RCIA Program, on Wednesday evenings, 6:30pm. We look forward to our excellent team of speakers continuing to share with those who are experiencing the promptings of the Holy Spirit, to "take a look at the Catholic Faith." If you're feeling this prompting, call the Parish Office 503 581-1623. RCIA is an acronym for "Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults" – the liturgical celebrations along the way to baptism at Easter Vigil. There is a three-phase process: Inquiry, for the first few months; then, Catechumenate, or "instruction," for the next several “Blessed are they who have months, but can extend over a longer time, because occasionally someone wants more kept the word with a gener- time for further study and prayer; and then Enlightenment, a rather different name, for the ous heart and yield a harvest time of Lent prior to baptism at Easter: at this point hesitation and confusion have evapothrough perseverance.” rated; it all just "clicks," "the light goes on," and now everything now starts to make sense in the "light of faith." People come to RCIA for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is a non-Catholic spouse, perhaps before the wedding, or maybe later during the marriage; either they see that they In Our Parish want a common religion as spouses, or they want a common religion for their family, or both are non-Catholic and just want some religion as a help in teaching children right and Baptism—Rite of Christian wrong, and giving them tools for good, decent, and holy living. Sometimes the nonInitiation Catholic has slowly been won over by the goodness seen in their Catholic spouse; spouses Alvaro Fabian Esquivel C. are not to pick on their mates about becoming Christian, but instead let their excellent beCataleya Ascencio havior speak for itself (1Cor 7:13ff, 1Pet 3:1). Indeed the vast majority of conversions Damian Garibay Ochoa occur in connection with the vocation of marriage and family life: the faith is seen as Ehitan Moreno Vazquez "saving truth for family life." A minority of folks turning Catholic are what might be Kainoa Mateo Kaipat Alvarez called "truth seekers." These are folks who are comparing and contrasting doctrines and Emilio Alonzo Martinez G. moral codes of different faiths and denominations, and weighing the reasons for, and coherence of, their teachings. Or, they may be individuals who have started tracing things Mia Inez Martinez G. back, deep into history, and come out convinced that the Catholic Church, in spite of the Selena Almanza Magaña foibles an weaknesses of its members (just like any other church or institution) is indeed Ramses Maldonado the "first" Christian Church, the one founded by Jesus Christ. Or, a Jewish inquirer may find various "loose ends" pull together, in Christianity, and particularly in Catholicism. Funeral—Rite of Christian One book is of interest, by Rosalind Moss: Home at Last: 11 Who Found Their Way to the Burial Catholic Church (Catholic Answers, San Diego, 2000); Ms. Moss found Passover fulfilled Manuel Paniagua in the Mass, and has since founded a religious order, based in Saint Louis. Ramon Arellano Hernandez I recently took a look at chnetwork.org (Coming Home Network). The Network was Salvador Garibay started by Marcus Grodi, who along with high-profile pastor figures like Scott Hahn or Steve Ray, converted from Protestant backgrounds. They generally describe how their attempt to "ground" their faith in fact, logic, completeness, and certainty, led them, maybe Catholic Young kicking and screaming, ineluctably into Catholicism, often at great loss professionally and Adults Dance personally. John Henry Cardinal Newman, of Oxford, is the 19th century Scott Hahn. Pope Francis will canonize him this coming October 13. The chnetwork.org website has Put on your dance shoes and many excellent resources, including videos of conference lectures by very thoughtful come join us for a social ball- speakers. Check it out. That said, for every new convert to Catholicism in the USA, seven leave the practice of room dance for young adults, the Catholic faith (Bishop Barron). They have their own reasons. Many Catholic parents ages 18-32, on July 28th live with great sadness, because maybe all their children have left the practice of the faith. from 6:00-9:00pm in St. Jo- Some join another Christian Church, others a non-Christian religion, others become seph's gym. "Nones" (no affiliation with any faith). Of course, the sadness works two ways: at Easter We will be dancing Waltz, Vigil, we rejoice in the newly baptized and received members of the Church; but while we rejoice, maybe some of their families are "mourning" the "loss" of their children to a Swing, Foxtrot and Cha Cha, "false religion." and basic instruction in The issue is ultimately this: where is "truth" to be found? God wants us all to be saved Swing will be given during and come to the knowledge of the truth (1Tim 2:4). The opposite of living in conscious the first half hour; beginners harmony with "truth" is to live a "lie." Sigmund Freud, in The Future of an Illusion, conwelcome! sidered religion to be a "lie," or "illusion" (not a "delusion"): a helpful fiction, to be sure, looking back historically, but one which bit by bit mankind will outgrow. I think Freud Suggested donation: $3. was wrong. If you think deeply enough about what "absolute truth" might look like, if it Entrance will be denied for were real, you will suddenly gasp, and say, "So that's what they were getting at when they those wearing narrow high talked about the Holy Trinity!" In the end we must answer the question: What is worthy of us to live and to die for? heels.

Adorers: If you must leave Jesus alone please gently close the tabernacle doors (the light will remain on). Laudato Si 61. On many concrete questions, the Church has no reason to offer a definitive opinion; she knows that honest debate must be encouraged among experts, while respecting divergent views. But we need only take a frank look at the facts to see that our common home is falling into serious disrepair. Hope would have us recognize that there is always a way out, that we can always redirect our steps, that we can always do something to solve our problems. Still, we can see signs that things are now reaching a breaking point, due to the rapid pace of change and degradation; these are evident in large-scale natural disasters as well as social and even financial crises, for the world’s problems cannot be analyzed or explained in isolation.
