La primavera ha vuelto al Barrio de las Letras

a primavera le vuelve a sentar bien al Barrio de las Letras de Madrid, que recibió la nueva estación, el pasado sábado 2 de abril, con la celebración de la primera edición del Día de las Ranas-Edición Cervantes, con todo tipo de actividades especiales para disfrute de todos, desde los más pequeños a los más mayores. La Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras organiza estos sábados especiales que se repetirán otros sábados del año, en un barrio que ya se prepara para celebrar, del 8 al 14 de junio, DecorAccion, un gran evento organizado por la Asociación de Comerciantes en colaboración con la revista Nuevo Estilo y el Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Esta cita con el diseño, el arte y el interiorismo, con mercadillos a pie de calle, se ha convertido en el mayor evento urbano de la decoración en España, en esta ocasión con el Sol como protagonista de esta convocatoria a la que dedicamos nuestro reportaje de portada. Además, en estas páginas podréis pasear por la historia de calles como León y Prado, pasar a algunas de las librerías de un barrio cultural como pocos, y visitar la exposición dedicada a Cervantes, uno de nuestros vecinos ilustres, en la Bibioteca Nacional. Y tomar nota de las recomendaciones de nuestras guía de espectáculos, exposiciones y propuestas gastronómicas. Quedáis invitados.

Spring has returned to the Barrio de las Letras Spring has returned to the Barrio de las Letras, where the new season was rung in on Saturday 2 April with the celebration of Frogs Day-Cervantes Edition, with all manner of special activities enjoyed by all, from the youngest to the oldest. The Barrio de las Letras Traders Association organises these special Saturdays throughout the year and the latest was held in a neighbourhood already gearing up for DecorAccion 2016 from 8 to 14 June, a great event organised by Barrio de las Letras Business Asociation with Nuevo Estilo magazine and Madrid City Council. This design, art and interiors

festival, complete with street market, has become a major urban decoration event in Spain. This year’s theme is the sun, and this issue’s cover story is dedicated to the event. These pages will also take you on a journey through the history of streets like Calle León and Calle Prado, passing by some of the Literary Quarter’s best bookshops and also visiting the Cervantes exhibition hosted by our friends at the Biblioteca Nacional. As always, take note of the recommendations in our Entertainment Guide with shows, exhibitions and recommendations for eating out. You’re all invited.

La revista Nuevo Estilo, el Barrio de Las Letras, a través de la Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras, y el Ayuntamiento de Madrid confirman su compromiso un año más con el diseño, el arte y el interiorismo en el que se ha convertido en el mayor evento urbano de la decoración en España, DecorAccion, una convocatoria que este año, en su séptima edición, contará con el Sol como motivo vertebrador de las acciones propuestas para todo tipo de públicos. Lo verás en los medios de comunicación, pero, además, tú puedes ser protagonista de estos días especiales si te acercas a disfrutar de ellos en el Barrio de las Letras The dates to mark in your diary are 8 to 14 June, when you can attend this celebration of style and imagination in one of Madrid’s most stylish neighbourhoods. The magazine Nuevo Estilo, in association with the Barrio de las Letras Traders Association and Madrid City Council have once more shown their commitment this year to design, art and interiors in what has become the biggest urban decoration event in Spain, DecorAccion. Celebrating its seventh edition this year, the common theme across all of the installations will be the Sun, with something for all tastes. They’ll be seen in the media but you can play your part in this unique event by visiting the Barrio de las Letras to enjoy the show.

Este año, DecorAccion, llega con más novedades que nunca. Y no solo porque se podrá disfrutar más días de este evento (hasta siete), sino por nuevas ideas en instalaciones, talleres, decoraciones, conferencias, encuentros etc., con más calles destinadas a mercadillos. El centro neurálgico será el Palacio de Santoña, sede histórica de la Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid en la calle Huertas, 13, donde se celebrarán todo tipo de actividades, además de ofrecer la posibilidad de tomar algo e informarse sobre este gran evento. Los puestos distribuidos por las calles Cervantes, San Agustín, Moratín, San Pedro y San José, estarán del 9 al 12 de junio en horario de 11.00 a 22.00 h. excepto el domingo, que cerrarán a las 18 h.Los visitantes de

III Concurso de Balcones del Barrio de las Letras This year, DecorAccion has more new features than ever. And not just because you can enjoy this event for longer (seven days), but for all new ideas in installations, workshops, decorations, conferences, meetings and even more street markets. The nerve centre will be the Palacio de Santoña on Calle Huertas, the historic headquarters of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where all kinds of activities will be held and where you can find all the information about this great event. Stalls on Calles Cervantes, San Agustín, Moratín, San Pedro and San José will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Sunday, when they’ll close at 6 p.m.

Visitors to DecorAccion can admire the temporary installations from interior designers, spaces designed for leisure where interior design, gastronomy and art go hand in hand, as well as antique and pop-up markets. What’s more, there’s also the Audi Innovative Design Talent Award, with the aim of discovering and supporting young emerging talent in the area of industrial design; meet-ups for bloggers; urban art installations and lots more. ada paseo por el Barrio de las Letras puede invitar a imaginar al paseante como eran siglos atrás sus calles. En el caso de la calle León, una de las moradas de Cervantes y, muchos años más tarde, del Nobel de Literatura Jacinto Benavente, podemos evocar los tiempos, siglo XVII, en los que la calle del Mentidero o del León (se dice que un extranjero residió en ella con un león enjaulado) acogía todo tipo de ciudadanos, varios de ellos literatos y actores… o aspirantes a ello. Los mentideros eran lugares de encuentro en los que se intercambiaban todo tipo de noticias e inclusos chismorreos de la época, y no era raro que alguno de ellos terminase en pelea. Años más tarde, ya en el 12

Still present today, the former has the honour of a street named after him, which crosses Calle León and, a few meters further down, is home to the Lope de Vega House Museum. Del Prado Street Calle León also crosses Calle del Prado, which runs the breadth of the Barrio de las Letras, from Plaza de Santa Ana to Plaza de las Cortes, from the statues of Calderón de la Barca to that of Miguel de Cervantes. This street is one of the main thoroughfares in

Se dice que el origen del nombre puede proceder de Francisco de Prado, un vecino de la calle o por su proximidad al antiguo prado de San Jerónimo, el actual Paseo del Prado. Y también acogía un mentidero, el de los Representantes, en intersección con la calle León, por lo que la animación quedaba garantizada. Desde entonces, sus aceras forjaron la historia de un recorrido que, en la actualidad, acoge librerías, anticuarios, hoteles, bares y restaurantes, moda y complementos… todos conviven en una calle que acoge un centro cultural de excepción: el Ateneo de Madrid, fundado en 1820, toda una institución y foro de todo tipo de saberes y pareceres. Como en el caso de la calle León, del Prado ha sido el escenario en estos últimos siglos de todo tipo de vivencias de personas ilustres y personas anónimas. Desde Cervantes, Lope, Calderón de la Barca, Valle Inclán, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Federico García Lorca, Luis Buñuel, el presidente José Canalejas, los actores y actrices más insignes de cada época… todos vivieron a fondo estas calles que tú, lector, tienes a tu disposición para disfrutar de un gratificante paseo. 14

this part of Madrid, offering shopping, culture and some of this neighborhood’s sites of special historical interest. It is said that is so named for Francisco de Prado, a local resident, or for its proximity to the prado, or meadow, of San Jerónimo, now the grand Paseo del Prado. This street was also home to a mentidero, the so-called Representantes, at the corner with Calle León, so it was always guaranteed to be lively. Over time it has become the street we see today, home to bookshops, antique shops, hotels, bars, restaurants, fashion boutiques and

accessories. It is also the address of the Ateneo de Madrid, founded in 1820 and an institution of knowledge and culture. Like Calle León, Calle del Prado has been witness to plenty of history and many illustrious and anonymous figures over the centuries. Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, Valle Inclán, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Federico García Lorca, Luis Buñuel, President José Canalejas and iconic actors and actresses from all eras have walked these streets, still preserved so that you, dear reader, can enjoy a pleasant stroll.

Toda una experiencia Desde el Paseo del Prado hasta la Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, desde Atocha a la Carrera de San Jerónimo, el Barrio de las Letras compone un espacio en el que los amantes de la literatura disponen de todo tipo de gratos encuentros. Curiously for the visitor, and something locals will already be familiar with, this tribute to literature, culture and history can be seen in more than 20 texts inscribed in golden letters on the streets of the neighbourhood. Miguel de Cervantes: From Life to Myth

L

a exposición 'Miguel de Cervantes: de la vida al mito (1616-2016)' forma parte, desde el pasado 4 de marzo y hasta el 22 de mayo, de los actos programados con motivo del IV centenario de la muerte del escritor y ha sido organizada por la Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) y Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). El catedrático de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Presidente de honor de la Asociación de Cervantistas, José Manuel Lucía Megías, es el comisario de la exposición, asesorado por un comité de expertos, como José Álvarez Junco, Javier Gomá y Carlos Reyero. Todos han contribuido a un loable esfuerzo conjunto para analizar la vida y obra del autor de 'Don Quijote de La Mancha'. La visita merece la pena, ya que se pueden contemplar hasta 200 piezas relacionadas con el protagonista y su tiempo, entre documentos, libros, esculturas, fotografías, óleos , etc. El propio fondo cervantino de la Biblioteca ha sido muy importante, además de préstamos excepcionales

Viaje con Cervantes La exposición comienza con una breve intervención artística en la que Cervantes se presenta y describe los tres ejes en los que se estructura la exposición: 'Un hombre llamado Miguel de Cervantes', 'Una imagen llamada Miguel de Cervantes' y 'Un mito llamado Miguel de Cervantes'. A partir de aquí, se inicia un muy recomendable recorrido por el que podemos conocer cómo se vivía en aquélla época y nos podemos acercar a todo tipo de información sobre la vida cotidiana del escritor y sobre la realización de sus obras, además de la combinación entre realidad y el mito, propia de cientos de interpretaciones sobre la existencia de un manchego universal convertido en símbolo tanto de la lengua española como de nuestra forma de ser, de vivir. „ A. Una excelente ocasión para conocer mejor la vida y obra de Cervantes An excellent opportunity to learn more about his life and work The exhibition 'Miguel de Cervantes: From Life to Myth (1616-2016)', from 4 March to May 22, is among the events programmed to commemorate the fourth centenary of the author’s death and has been organized by the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). The Professor of Philology at Complutense University of Madrid and Honorary President of the Association of Cervantistas, José Manuel Lucía Megías, is the curator of the exhibition, advised by a committee of experts in-

cluding José Álvarez Junco, Javier Gomá and Carlos Reyero. All contributed sterling efforts to a commendable collaboration, analysing the life and work of the author of 'Don Quixote of La Mancha'. The exhibition is well worth a visit, with over 200 pieces relating to the protagonist and his era on display, among them books, sculptures, photographs and oil paintings. The National Library’s own Cervantine resources have proved particularly important in compiling the exhibition, as have the

Todo un éxito de convocatoria para cientos de visitantes que pudieron disfrutar de las actividades institucionales y las propias de los comercios de la zona, con todo tipo de actividades infantiles, exposiciones, conferencias (como las celebradas en el Gabinete de Historia Natural), ofertas especiales, degustaciones, etc. 44

The Barrio de las Letras Traders’ Association were pleased to welcome two special guests, in Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, to join all those present for the first edition of El Día de las Ranas (Frogs’ Day) - Cervantes Edition. The occasion was a resounding success with hundreds of visitors enjoying activities organised by cultural institutions and the businesses themselves, with children’s activities, exhibitions, conferences – such as that held at the Gabinete de Historia Natural, special offers, tastings and lots more on offer. The event, covered widely in the media, also included activities like Somewhere in the Barrio de las Letras (Don Quixote-inspired decoration of the neighbourhood). Discover the Quixote in the Barrio de las Letras saw two actors playing Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, atop their respective steeds, trotting through the Barrio de las Letras recreating scenes from the novel and there were many more short theatrical interpretations of the adventures of the maestro of La Mancha.
