P REPARING FOR THE C ONSECRATION OF THE A RCHDIOCESE OF S AN F RANCISCO TO THE I MMACULATE H EART OF M ARY Part 47 WHEN THE PHYSICIANS FIRST MENTIONED THE OPERATION to Jacinta, she warned them that it would be useless because Our Lady was going to take her to Heaven. “It is all in vain. Our Lady told me that I am going to die soon.” Jacinta even had someone write to Lucia to tell her the very day and hour of her future death. However, out of humility and obedience, she yielded to the insistence of the physicians. Jacinta was found too weak to be able to receive general anesthesia. The local anesthetic was very weak in 1917. The pure Jacinta appears to have suffered more from having to expose her body and to place herself in the hands of strange men than from the physical effects of the intensely painful operation. The operation was a prolonged participation in the Passion of Christ. The surgeons removed two of her ribs. The open wound on her chest was the size of a fist and had to be bathed and cleansed often. It was a constant source of pain. During the operation, the suffering saint allowed only a few words to escape her lips: “Oh, Our Lady! Oh! Our The Martos, parents of Jacinta and Francisco Lady! Patience. We must suffer [from Ignatius Press book, Fatima Mysteries] to go to Heaven.” There is no doubt that the child was conformed to the physical sufferings of the martyrs. Jacinta rejoiced in the physical suffering of the operation because she knew that it would deliver many souls unto salvation, escaping the terrible fire of Hell. “Now you can convert many sinners,” she prayed, “for I suffer a great deal, my Jesus.” Our Lady continued to visit her to strengthen her. On February 16, she said, “I am not complaining anymore. Our Lady has appeared again and said that she was coming for me soon. She took all my pains away.” Indeed, for the final four days of her life, the physician reports that Jacinta’s pains were entirely absent and that the saint busied herself in

the hospital looking at religious pictures, among which was Our Lady of the Sameiro, which Jacinta said most resembled Our Lady. The Mother Superior continued to visit Jacinta every day, bringing different friends with her. If anyone happened to sit near the bed where Our Lady stood when she appeared, Jacinta would say, “Please move aside for Our Lady stood there.” When asked if she wanted to see her mother again, Jacinta replied with serenity: “My family will not live long and soon we will all meet in Heaven. Our Lady shall appear again but not to me, for I am going to die, as Our Lady told me.” †
