Acapulco

The newer Acapulco Diamante area situated from Puerto Marques Bay to Revolcadero Beach offers first-class resorts, residential developments, modern shopping malls, 4 spectacular 18-holes golf courses, and one of kind tourist complex offering relaxation, business, entertainment and wellbeing, all in a single destination with a luxurious hotel, an spa, an avant-garde performance and entertainment venue, and a modern Convention and Exposition Center. The climate is tropical and humid with sun the greater part of the year, the rainy goes from June to October. The average temperature is 33°C and the minimum is 22°C. Today this beach destination is experiencing a renaissance like no other because private investments include opening hotels, spas, restaurants, malls and new attractions, improving infrastructure and tourism services. There is also a new public transit system known as Acabus. It is efficient, safe, comfortable and fast and connects the resort’s many tourism attractions and facilities. ACAPULCO ATTRACTIONS AND SIGHTSEEING San Diego Fort This is the most historic building in Acapulco, originally built in 1616 to protect the city from pirate attacks, since the luxury items brought from Asia attracted the attention of English and Dutch pirates. In the present times, the star-shaped fort serves as museum (Acapulco’s History Museum), illustrating Acapulco’s past, and is the most important historical monument of the Port. The 12 exhibit room displays objects that relate not only to the history of San Diego Fort but also to the city and its cultural influences. Open daily from 9:30 to 6:00. Closed Mondays.
Mural de Diego Rivera (Mosaic Mural) The Dolores Olmedo House is noted for the murals by Diego Rivera. It is also known as “La Casa de los Vientos” (The House of Winds) and was created in 1956, made with colored mosaics, stones and seashells. You can appreciate the mural located on the outside wall called Exekatlkalli, a sculpturepainting where the Gods Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc, important deities of the Aztec culture, can be appreciated.

Traditional Acapulco

The Old Acapulco district is a particularly historic part of the city and filled with character. It is also known as the “Acapulco Naútico” (Nautic Acapulco). Many of the main attractions lie within Acapulco’s Traditional Zone, such as: La Quebrada, the Yacht club, the San Diego Fort, and many restaurants, among others.

Roqueta Island Located just 10 minutes from Playa Caleta or Caletilla by boat. Take the glass bottom boat and admire the rich marine life and the underwater shrine of the Patron Saint of Fishermen, the Virgin of Guadalupe submerged in the bottom at just 7 m (23 ft.). On the island, the trail leads to the lighthouse, and then to the restaurants. This tropical paradise has quiet beaches where you can practice kayak and paddleboard, and 9 small coves teeming with colorful tropical fish, ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. It is also a nice place for trekking.

La Quebrada The popular show, features spectacular dives from a high cliff where divers, sometimes in pairs, plunge 135 feet into an inlet that is only 22 feet wide and 13 feet deep. The tradition started in 1934. Enjoy this spectacular sight daily at 13:00, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30 y 22:30 365 days a year. In the last dive, they carry flaming torches.

NATURAL Mapa de la Bahía de Santa WONDERS Lucía Coyuca Lagoon Located only 10 kilometers from the Bay of Acapulco the lagoon is 17 kilometers long and a maximum width of 5 kilometers. This jewel hides tow little islands: Los Pájaros and La Montosa. The exuberant tropical vegetation and mangroves are home to over 250 bird species and 14 species of edible fish. It is an excellent place for water sports like water ski, weakeboard or fishing. You can take a trip through the mangroves with a native boat and catch a glimpse of tropical birds and turtle, a unique experience. Tres Palos Lagoon It is located between Puerto Marqués and the international Airport, across from Barra Vieja beach. This huge freshwater lagoon (9 miles long and 3.6 miles wide) is surrounded by an impressive mangrove and is home to several species of fish as well as a diverse species of tropical birds, in fact this is one of the best places for bird watching in Acapulco. Several small boats are at hand to take a tour of the lagoon with a guide who will show you the unspoiled nature of the area. Try on this tour, a deeper cleansing experience with a facial mud exfoliator, the mud is taken from deep within the lagoon and it will not only exfoliate, it also helps in eliminating toxins and restoring moisture to your skin. In case you are more adventurous, you can rent your own jet ski and explore the canals around the lagoon. There is also horseback riding in the surrounding area. This huge lagoon was used as a set in the first Tarzan movie for its intact nature.

Turtle Protection Program in Acapulco From June through December, visitors can observe the nightly arrival of female turtles that leave the ocean to lay their eggs at Revolcadero Beach and in Pie de la Cuesta beaches. And from October through January you can watch the small turtles returning to the sea. There is a Turtle Camp in Playa Larga, where you can meet, learn much more about the sea turtle.

& LEISURE Mapa de la BahíaCULTURE de Santa Lucía Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra The orchestra is one of the port city’s most enjoyable assets and one of the best orchestras in the country. The orchestra relies on 90 talented and experienced professional musicians. The Philharmonic Orchestra performs approximately 25 concerts each year in the Juan Ruíz de Alarcón Theater located in the International Convention Center of Acapulco, in addition to sixty or more concerts for children and performances in other venues. It has shared the stage with world-class artists such as Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Vadem Brodsky, Eugene Fodor, Fernando de la Mora and Tania Libertad, among others. Acapulco Cultural Center Features cultural exhibits, paintings and photographs, as well as collections of artifacts and relics of ancient cultures of the State of Guerrero. Located in Av. Costera Miguel Alemán 4834, Fracc. Costa Azul.
Acapulco Botanical Garden It is located in the Southern Sierra Madre Mountains, which surround Acapulco at an altitude of between 660 and 1300 feet (200 and 400 meters) above sea level. The garden includes 6 hectares of subtropical deciduous forest. It has very comfortable trails where you can observe the two creeks, a collection of palms and cycads, desert plants, hardwoods as well as flowering and fruit trees, shrubs, heliconias and gingers, bromeliads, aeroids, ferns and vines among others. Along the trails you can also watch the regional fauna. There is a souvenir shop and an amphitheater used for concerts and conferences. Open daily from 9:00 to 18:00 hrs. Sundays the entrance is free.

Palma Sola Archaeological Site The archaeological site is located in El Veladero National Park on a mountainside high above Acapulco. There are a total of eighteen carved rocks in the area dating from 800 BC to 750 AD. You will spot dozens of designs ranging from anthromorphological to zoomorphological images created by the first settlers in the area. A steep, sturdy trail winds 400m uphill past the petroglyphs, all marked by Spanish and English signs, and ending with wonderful city views at 1200to-1300 feet above sea level, definitely worth the visit. It’s about a 25-minute taxi ride from Old Acapulco.
Tehuacalco Archeological Site Located a short distance from the state of Guerrero’s capital city of Chilpancingo, and about an hour from Acapulco, this ancient site is on a hill surrounded by taller mountains. It was occupied from about 650 and 1300CE. The site was a ceremonial center with a plaza surrounded by various pyramid bases and other structures with a distinct construction style, which consists of boulders with spaces between them filled in with layers of flat rock and red clay. The site has four aspects, areas with rock etchings, the surrounding mountain terrain, pyramidal structures and caves in the hills with offerings. There are various tours and scheduled trips. Open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.

BEACHES IN ACAPULCO
Acapulco has plenty of unique beautiful beaches, along the bayside, in the Traditional or Nautical area, the Golden Zone, the exclusivity of Pichilingue, the comfort of Punta Diamante, or the secluded beaches in Barra Vieja. Acapulco’s beaches are world renowned for their beauty and their services. Beside four beaches have been recognized by the Foundation for Environmental Education’s (FEE) Blue Flag program.
Pie de la Cuesta It is about 45 minutes north of Acapulco, is a lovely stretch of tropical beach that extends for 17 kilometers between the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Coyuca Lagoon. It has extremely high and dangerous waves, and it has hosted surfing events. Sometimes, you can spot some whales and dolphins, making this beach a unique place to admire the sunsets. You’ll find many local resorts and seafood restaurants, perfect for couples seeking secluded romance or for nature lovers. Playa La langosta It is a small beach located in a small cove opening directly into the Pacific Ocean beneath towering mountain cliffs. It’s much less crowded than other beaches and generally too rough for swimming, though is a great place to watch the sunset.

Caleta and Caletilla They are two of the most known and visited beaches of Acapulco located in the Traditional zone. Twin beaches separated by a small outcropping of land that sparkle brightly in the Old Acapulco. Here you will find thatched-roofed seafood restaurants and watersports equipment for rent. Since the beaches have gentle waves, they both are great to practice snorkel, paddle board and kayak. There are also glass bottom brightly painted boats that ferry passengers to Roqueta Island. Playa Roqueta and Marín These are two small beaches amidst a hilly forested terrain in the Roqueta Island. Playa Roqueta has thatched-roof restaurants where you can enjoy a snack and a cold beer, and Playa Marín is a more secluded beach with emerald waters. You can get here by boat departing from Playa Caleta. Playa Tlacopanocha
Playa Tamarindos
This small beach - only about 100 meters long - lies along at the end of the city’s Malecon (sea walk) and across from the Maritime Terminal. It’s probably the most popular spot for families with very small children for the little wave activity. Popular with locals, it’s a good place for observing fishermen, yachts and cruise ships.
It extends for about 700 meters and is located northwest of the Santa Lucía Bay close to Acapulco’s Traditional Zone. There are rows of large coconut palms and several good beach restaurants with the typical tropical style of old Acapulco. The water is somewhat calmer than in the beaches farther to the east in the Golden Zone.

Playa Tres Vidas
Playa Revolcadero Lovely wide stretch of sandy beach. Waves are large and surfing is popular here, especially in summer, but a strong undertow makes swimming dangerous. It is ideal for horseback riding. The beach has seen a recent explosion in luxury tourism and residential development. The beach was recognized by the Foundation for Environmental Education’s (FEE) Blue Flag program.
Here there’s an exclusive 18-hole golf course, many holes along the coastline, and a luxury boutique hotel. Big Wave Beach, excellent for surfing.
Playa Larga This long stretch of beach is a great place for people who love nature and long walks. Here is located a turtle protection camp where you can meet, learn and help to take care of sea turtles.
Playa Bonfil A popular beach with surfers, since the wave quality is described as “regional classic”. It is also ideal for walking or horseback riding. Additionally, it has excellent seafood restaurants where you can enjoy the famous “pescado a la talla”.
Barra Vieja A long beach that stretches for miles. Small restaurants that offer delicious “pescado a la talla” surround the beach. You can enjoy a horseback riding, or ATV riding, or just walk along the beach and watch the beautiful sunset.

Scuba Diving in Acapulco - The underwater landscape of Acapulco has a wide diversity that includes caves, walls, sunken ships and rocky reefs. November to May is considered the best season to dive because the sea conditions in the Pacific are calmest and the pelagic species are most easily seen during these months, beside divers have the chance of spotting the rare whale shark or even a migratory whale; however, visibility is not very good for the plankton blooms. The average water temperature is approximately 24ºC (75ºF). The visibility changes from one day to another because of the water currents, though the average visibility is from 18 to 38 feet (5 to16 meters). June to October the visibility is at its peak and the water warms significantly, reaching 75°F (24°C), especially during August and September. There are about 20 or so sites, for every level of diver, but the best spots are: El Bajo Depth: 8 mts. (15 ft.) - 50 mts. (150 ft.) It is located just one kilometer from La Quebrada the site of the famous cliff divers performance. It a huge rock formation covered with corals, mollusks and nudibranchs, among others. The peak of the mountain is located about 8 mts. (15 ft.) deep and extends to a depth of 50 m. (150 ft.). You can dive at different depths through different geological areas of the wall. It is highly recommended for those who like photography for its great biodiversity. Depending on the visibility and the current. You’ll find a huge school of fishes, green moray, boxfish, octopus, ballonfish and sometimes when it’s season humpback whales and whale sharks. Casa de Fabbri Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 30 mts. (100 ft.). It is a unique place with rock formations in the shape of pyramids and you can see a lot of fish at different depths. Only for Certified Divers with some experience. Siete Pulpos (Seven Octopuses) Depth: 15 mts. (45 ft.) - 26 mts. (78 ft.). In this site there are nice canyons and rock formations that reach a depth of up to 20 m (60 ft.). You can find a great variety of species among which are various nudibranchs and seahorses. Is a site for certified divers.

Casa del Árabe (Arab’s House) Depth: 10 mts. (30 ft.) - 16 mts (48 ft.). This site has a sandy bottom with some rock formations. It is ideal for drift diving and beginners. It’s perfect for snorkel. Los Suizos (The Swiss) Depth: 5 mts (15 ft.) - 15 mts. (50 ft.). It is a place for drift diving and you can observe different rock formations, eagle rays, turtles, octopuses and large schools of fish. El Canal (The Channel) Depth: 10 mts. (30 ft.) - 20 mts. (60 ft.). It is located the channel between the coast and the Roqueta Island. Depending on the season the current can be strong and you can have a drift dive. Not uncommon to see schools of fish among the rock formations. Palmititas Depth: 3 mts. (9 ft.) - 10 mts. (30 ft.). It is an ideal place for beginners and for snorkeling. In this site you can find some parts of a sunken ship. Palmitas Depth: 8 mts. (25 ft.) - 12 mts. (40 ft.). A great shallow dive or snorkel site with sandy bottoms and small formations of coral, eagle rays, mottled moray eels and butterfly fish, among others. It is ideal for beginners and usually done as a second dive for certified divers. El Rincón (The Corner) Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 15 mts. (45 ft.). This is an exciting site with artificial reefs and a tunnel where a large number of fish live. Divers of all experience levels can enjoy this place and it is also a nice option for snorkeling. El Jardín (The Garden) Depth: 8 mts. (24 ft.) - 15 mts. (45 ft.). This site offers easy dives that start on shallow, sandy bottoms with gradual descents over hard and soft corals that are ideal for beginners and snorkeling. Here you will find eagle rays, surgeons, spotted moray eels, butterfly fish, turtles and balloon fish, among others. Usually done as a second dive. El Guano Depth: 15 mts. (45 ft.) - 40 mts. (120 ft.). It takes its name from the rock totally covered with “guano” (accumulated excrement of seabirds). This is a site with strong currents and great visibility recommended for experienced divers. The site offers a great diversity of underwater life and you can easily see eagle rays, snappers, schools of tapons, surgeons and barracudas. During the winter months is not unusual to spot stingrays, whale sharks and some humpback whales.

Las Cuevas (The Caves) Depth: 10 mts. (30 ft.) - 40 mts. (130 ft.). This is a site only for Advanced Certified Divers with experience in drift and current dives with many swim through tunnels and caves where you can expect to see an array of marine creatures like eagle rays, stone fish, octopuses, mottled and green moray eels, mackerels, snapper and stingrays, among others. This site is a photographer’s paradise. It is highly advisable to dive early in the morning for the strong currents. El Bufadero Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 40 mts. (120 ft.). It is a place with huge rock formations and a great marine diversity. The current is very strong so it is only for experienced divers. Marina & Labyrinth Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 30 mts. (100 ft.). You can only dive in this site from October to May when the waters are shallow and it is only for experienced divers with a guide as there are several canyons where the divers can get lost. However, is a good place for snorkeling on the surface. Hawaii Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 27 mts. (80 ft.). This site is available only when the conditions are acceptable, it has strong currents and is only for advanced divers. Dive along some huge rock formations and you can spot abundant marine life. Reina de los Mares o la Virgen (Queen of the Seas or the Virgin) There is an underwater stylized sculpture of the Virgin of Guadalupe placed in the bottom of the sea near the islet of the Yerbabuena. The bonze statue is more tan eight feet and weight almost a thousand pounds. There are numerous glass bottom small boats, that allows you to observe the sea life as well as a submerged statue of the Virgin. Boca Chica Depth: 8 mts. (24 ft.) - 20 mts. (60 ft.). It is located in a small bay, so it is also a good place for snokeling. SDA Beach Depth: 2 mts. (6 ft.) - 14 mts. (42 ft.). It is an ideal site for night dives and for the beginner diver. Corsario (Privateer) Depth: 5 mts. (15 ft.) - 15 mts. (45 ft.). This is of the most popular dive sites in Acapulco, where you can explore the wreck of a luxury yacht. The boat crashed into rocks in 1950 and today you can dive thought the skeleton, the unique rock formations and a multitude of fish.

El Acapulco Depth: 3 mts. (10 ft.) - 22 mts. (70 ft.). This former American boat was sunk a few hundred feet from shore due to bad weather. This wreck diving site is interesting because the vessel is vertical and the bow remained just below the surface. Río de la Plata Depth: 15 mts. (45 ft.) - 30 mts. (90 ft.). This is another wreck diving site. This boat was Argentinian and sank in 1944 after catching fire; with time it has transformed into a habitat for an array of species. It is a site for experienced divers where it is recommended to go with local divers. This area is teeming with school of tarpons, grunts and eagle rays. Punta Bruja Depth: 10 mts. (30 ft.) - 35 mts. (115 ft.). The wall terraces and rocky formations allows for great dive at your desired depth. The wave-carved granite cliffs are the refuge of a great amount of fish, anemones and sea stars. Punta Sirena It is a small secluded cove with the sandy bottom. This site is rarely visited because the currents can be very strong. The landscape is similar to “Las Cuevas” in the Roqueta Island and you can find an enormous variety of fish and invertebrates. The maximum depth is 40 m (130 ft.).
Morro de Puerto Marqués The dive site is located just off shore, about 600 feet from the cost in the bay of Puerto Marques. It is an interesting place to dive with rock formations that form small caves, as well as massive richly colored sponges, giant sea fans and teeming with a large array of marine life.t
Piedra Gallo Only very experienced divers should attempt to dive here. The wave action here is powerful most of the year, and diving can be done only with extreme caution. The depths between 49 to 65 feet highlight an abundance of marine life. It is one of the best places in Acapulco for underwater photography. The diving conditions can change very fast; the visibility can vary widely and shift abruptly in minutes. The best season to visit is from November to January very early in the morning.

Playa Revolcadero and Playa Pie de la Cuesta, are some of the best places for surfing with waves ranging between two and eight meters high (six feet to twelve feet). Playa Revolcadero is a wide sand beach with the best-shaped waves and a sandy bottom, a nice place for beginners. Playa Bonfil, the waves break all day all year round right and left, with a size of three to six feet during November to February, and five to ten feet from June to October; the waver are fast, powerful and has hollow sections and it has sandy bottom.

If you want to kitesurf, there are different kite beaches, such as: Playa Revolcadero, Playa Bonfil, and Playa Barra Vieja. Usually the wind picks up in the afternoon after the 13:00 hrs.

The calm waters of Acapulco Bay are perfect for the Stand Up Paddle Board, a new sport that uses tables longer and wider than those used in the surf. It is an easy and enjoyable sport for the whole family that can be practiced along the bay, especially in the area of Roqueta Island, Pie de la Cuesta Lagoon and the Coyuca Lagoon.

One of the best places for fishing in the Pacific coast all year round, although the best time of the year to go fishing goes from December to August. For deep-sea fishing, sailfish abounds during December to January, and during June and July; the black marlin in January, May, and December; the blue marlin and the yellowfin tuna in August and from November to January; wahoo in January, February, November, and December; grouper, snook, barracuda, Spanish mackerel, bonito, pompano, shark, red snapper, and other species abound all year long. The Coyuca Lagoon and Tres Palos Lagoon are just perfect for freshwater fishing. Gastronomy & Typical Cuisine in Acapulco
The variety offered in Acapulco restaurants make this resort one of the most appealing beach destinations in the world. Most of the restaurants have an outdoor terrace and many have spectacular views of Acapulco Bay. The port’s typical food is an inspiring crossbred gastronomy which conjugates pre-Hispanic and European tastes. EVENTS AND CONVENTIONS IN ACAPULCO Acapulco has more than 260 hotels and 18,000 available rooms, of which 6500 are four stars and up hotels, ideal for business tourism. Acapulco International Center is strategically located in the heart of the hotel zone of Acapulco. It can serve up to 15,000 people. One of the rooms has an area of 6.320 meters column-free square. It also has two multi-purpose rooms for 5,000 meter each an outdoor theater with a capacity of 2,000 people, an indoor theater with capacity for 1,200 people and gardens and terraces that can be used for large dinners and other events. THE NEW ACAPULCO NEW AIRPORT TERMINAL The airport operator started construction of the new passenger terminal for the Acapulco Airport with an investment of 547 million pesos. The new terminal building will encompass 19,000 m2, and will increase the capacity from 1 million to 2 million passengers per year. The project emphasizes operating efficiency, vanguard architectural design, energy savings, modern technology, and a sustainable building.
MACROTUNEL The city is upgrading its transportation system with a 3.2 km long macro tunnel, the longest in the country and one of the three largest in Latin America. The project has an investment of 3,700 million pesos and is designed to decrease the travel time between the Diamante and Traditional zones. In the first stage, the Brisamar junction will connect with Cayaco-Av. Tecnológico junction, and will be ready on March 31st, 2017. In the second stage, the Cayaco-Diamante highway and will be in operation on June 30th of the same year.
ZIPLINE Acapulco is set to welcome XTASEA, an over-water zip line more than a mile in length that will reach speeds of up to 75 mph at an altitude of 328 feet. The zipline will cross the Puerto Marquez Bay and is the largest in the world. MUNDO IMPERIAL GROUP INVESTMENTS Mundo Imperial Group has a Master Plan in Acapulco and projects are expected to be completed between 2017 and 2022, creating 10,000 jobs. The $1 billion investment will be spread across different segments: the construction of Diamante Retirement Homes; the Princess Medical Center, a third-level hospital (offering tertiary care) that would handle all sorts of specialties and operations; the Premium Shopping Center, with the best selection of internationally recognized brands; an adventure/safari park, a 200-acre parcel of land; a Tennis Stadium with a capacity of 7,500 spectators; and the Princess Univrsity, specialized in tourism, hospitality and gastronomy.

NEW BEACH CONCEPT The new Beach Concept goes from Las Hamacas to the Krystal Hotel. The project is divided into three phases and includes: walkways, a bike path, nice squares with services for the beach, improvement of the image in the Fishermen’s Zone, creation of commercial areas such as the Seafood Market, a new concept of Public Beach with various recreational activities such as skateboarding, beach and water games and public places for tourism. In terms of tourist safety, the Municipal Government has strengthened and renovated the Acapulco Tourist Assistance and Protection Center (CAPTA). This agency is responsible for coordinating the various government institutions related to the tourism sector. The Center has specific operating systems and procedures to meet the visitors needs. It has been so successful, that this model is going to be implemented in other destinations by Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism.

Escénica, Pie de la Cuesta, Puerto Marqués, and Revolcadero Beach. Zonatur has a call center that operates 365-days a year where any problems related to public services can be reported.
