This joyful Eastertide

Alec Wyton

This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sorrow! My Love, the Crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow. Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst his three-day prison, our faith had been in vain; but now is Christ arisen. Death’s flood hath lost its chill, since Jesus crossed the river: Lord of all life, from ill my passing life deliver. My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber, till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number. A Mighty Fortress is our God

Bp. Curry: The Scriptures tell us that our Savior Christ spent the whole night in prayer before he chose and sent forth his twelve apostles. Likewise, the apostles prayed before they appointed Matthias to be one of their number. Let us, therefore, follow their examples, and offer our prayers to Almighty God before we ordain Jennifer for the work to which we trust the Holy Spirit has called her.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

MINISTERIO DE L A PAL ABRA

First Reading Isaiah 61:1-8 Seated The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines; but you shall be called priests of the Lord, you shall be named ministers of our God you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. Because their shame was double, and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot, therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Pueblo: Demos gracias a Dios.

Himno 377 De Pie

Second Reading 1 Timothy 3:1-7 Seated The saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an apt teacher, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. She must manage her own household well, keeping her children submissive and respectful in every way— for if someone does not know how to manage her own household, how can she take care of God’s church? She must not be a recent convert, or she may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, she must be well thought of by outsiders, so that she may not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Pueblo: Demos gracias a Dios.

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

Bp. Curry: God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come to pass: We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings, and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen.

Ob.

The Presiding Bishop and other bishops now lay their hands upon the head of the bishop-elect, and say together

Therefore, Father, make Jennifer a bishop in your Church. Pour out upon her the power of your princely Spirit, whom you bestowed upon your beloved Son Jesus Christ, with whom she endowed the apostles, and by whom your Church is built up in every place, to the glory and unceasing praise of your Name.

To you, O Father, all hearts are open; fill, we pray, the heart of this your servant whom you have chosen to be a bishop in your Church, with such love of you and of all the people, that she may feed and tend the flock of Christ, and exercise without reproach the high priesthood to which you have called her, serving before you day and night in the ministry of reconciliation, declaring pardon in your Name, offering the holy gifts, and wisely overseeing the life and work of the Church. In all things may he present before you the acceptable offering of a pure, and gentle, and holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and power and glory in the Church, now and for ever. People: Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving:

Enriching our Worship II. Standing Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Bishop: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Bishop: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Bishop: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing

Obispo: Demos gracias a Dios nuestro Señor. Pueblo: Es justo darle gracias y alabanza.

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.

Gloria y honor y alabanza a ti, Dios santo y vivo.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all, for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.

Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Oremos como nuestro Salvador Cristo nos enseñó.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Bishop Baskerville-Burrows’ consecration vestments are a gift from the people of the Diocese of Indianapolis, designed and executed by the Rev. Tom Honderich, priest affiliate at All Saints, Indianapolis. The vestments are executed in white silk with “New Gold” dupioni silk trim. The metallic thread embroidery is based on an 8th century cross found inscribed in the stone foundations of Canterbury Cathedral. Bishop Baskerville-Burrows’ rochet and chimere are a gift from the Ordained Women of the Diocese of Indianapolis. The rochet is the flowing white vestment worn by a bishop when presiding in a service that is not Eucharist (Holy Communion) or when the bishop is not in a presiding role at the Eucharist. It is gathered at the sleeves and trimmed in red. The chimere is the sleeveless red vestment worn over the rochet. Bishop Baskerville-Burrows’ cassock is a gift from the Episcopal Bishops of African Descent. The cassock may be worn by both clergy and lay people in services other than the Eucharist. A bishop’s cassock is traditionally purple, while others are black. The Episcopal Bishops of African Descent have also given a gift of an Ethiopian Coptic pectoral cross. This silver cross dates to the early 20th century. Bishop Baskerville-Burrows’ ring and pectoral cross were designed by Ms. Sherry Bender of The Goldsmith in Chicago. Ms. Bender has designed several rings for bishops of the Episcopal Church. The ring is a gift of the people of the Diocese of Chicago. It features the seal of the Diocese of Indianapolis surrounded by small purple diamonds. The pectoral cross is a gift of Trinity Church in Indianapolis and St. Richard’s Episcopal School. It is gold with an amethyst in the center. Bishop Baskerville-Burrows’ traveling crosier is a gift of the Union of Black Episcopalians and was designed by renowned sculptor Ed Hamilton who is also a lay leader in the Diocese of Kentucky. Some of Mr. Hamilton’s best known works are in Louisville where he lives. They are: The Abraham Lincoln Memorial at Waterfront Plaza, a life-size frontier family sculpture titled “Migration to the West” in the lobby of the Frazier Historical Arms Museum. and “York” an 8-foot bronze statue of the slave belonging to William Clark who was a vital part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806.

About the bread, liturgical furniture, and Eucharistic vesselsThe communion bread (all gluten free) was baked by Marie O’Neil, a parishioner at St. Paul’s, New Albany. She ran a wholesale bread business from the Parish House at St. Paul’s from 1990-1998. She started baking the Altar Bread at part of her time/talent and continues that ministry to this day. She is very involved in many aspects of parish life at St. Paul’s and is “very happy to be able to share her talent with the diocese on this very joyous occasion.” The altar, lectern and backdrop for the service were designed by Andrea Broxton of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Inspired by the theme of “baptismal waters” to suggest the colorways, Broxton designed the set to coordinate with the designs of the new bishop’s ordination vestments. The color pattern is also reflected in the chalice and paten commissioned for the consecration. The chalice and paten were created by David Berg of Beech Grove, Indiana. Although he currently works as a molecular biologist for Eli Lilly and Company, David Berg delights in creating detailed and beautiful stoneware pottery. He began learning the craft at the age of 10 and refined his skills through elective ceramics courses in college and by working for Bloomington Pottery Company after college. He departed from this hobby for about 20 years before opening a studio in 2004, and he hopes to work full-time in his studio some day. The glass chalices were designed and created by Slate Grove. Grove received a B.F.A. from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and a M.F.A. from Illinois State University. He has been celebrated as a Rising Star at Creative Glass Center of America’s at Glass Weekend in Wheaton, NJ; chosen as a top 10 Young Sculptor through Miami University; and nominated for a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. Grove is currently employed by Ball State University as the Glass Facilities Manager.
