October 4, 2018 Dear Friends, Grace and peace to you, in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ! In the days since Hurricane Florence crashed across the Carolinas, I have watched with a mix of horror and deep joy. Horror at the devastation caused by wind and water, with lives lost, homes destroyed and crops ruined. Deep joy as people have banded together to rescue neighbors, as friends and strangers have served meals to the homeless and hungry, and as donations and offers of assistance stream in from across the country and the world. In these first weeks, most of our efforts have been directed at local relief work in our own communities. Now, as the cameras shift away from us, we must continue to care for all who have been displaced while also beginning the long hard work of recovery. And so I write to ask for your support. At present, we know that Trinity Center, the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry, and twenty-three of our congregations have filed insurance claims. Others may also have suffered serious property damage. We are not yet certain how much it will cost to complete repairs and pay deductibles. But we do know that financial help will be welcomed from the rest of the diocese and from the wider church. None of our congregations or ministries should be left to fend for themselves! We will also need your support to engage in the work of recovery that will be taking place in so many communities across our diocese. As they did after Hurricane Matthew, our Diocesan Disaster Relief and Preparedness Commission will make grants to congregations who partner with others in their community to rebuild lives. These grants will also be funded from gifts from the wider church, and possibly from Episcopal Relief and Development. Unless a gift is designated for a specific purpose, our leadership will allocate gifts to assist where help is most needed. Alone, each of us could easily become overwhelmed by the challenges we face in so much of eastern North Carolina. But in Christ, and together with one another, we have been given by God every good gift that we will need.
