GOVERNING BOARD CANDIDATE STATEMENT TANQUE VERDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 13

I’m Susan Fry. I am running for re-election to the Tanque Verde Unified School District (TVUSD) Governing Board after joining the Board just over one year ago. As the only Board member with young children, and as an active participant in school activities, I am uniquely informed about the effects of district policy down to the lowest level. I have also worked on education policy at the highest level, when I ran a statewide taskforce on behalf of the Arizona State Superintendent, researching the potential for development and implementation of an Arizona Kindergarten Developmental Inventory. Through that work, I gained a unique perspective about issues facing school districts throughout the State, many of which are facing TVUSD. I strive to use these unique perspectives to inform thoughtful solutions which balance the needs of students, parents, teachers, and staff, in order to secure the best possible future for our children, our district, and our state. During my time on the Board, I have been an independent thinker with the courage to ask difficult questions, and work with the other Board members to develop reasonable solutions. Over the last year, the Board has worked together to reach agreement about various issues, including school year 2016-2017 Proposition 123 funding, of which the Board directed approximately 85% of the funds to raise teacher salaries and increase classified (hourly) staff wages. In addition, the coming year will bring a leadership change to the District, as the current superintendent will be retiring. We must be thoughtful in our approach to hiring a new leader, and open to community feedback and conversation. Also, the District is considering establishing an early childhood center (preschool). I represent the Governing Board on the preschool committee, and my background in early childhood is valuable during this important decision making process. I am a Tucson native, and my background is in philanthropy and public health. I attended Stanford University, and then completed a Master’s degree in Philanthropy at Indiana University, and later a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Arizona (UofA). I grew up in a family that put a heavy emphasis on education, as my father was a longtime engineering professor at the UofA. I am a small business owner, and over the last twenty years I have worked in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors across Arizona, running large grantmaking

programs, overseeing statewide early childhood programs, and assisting with education reform initiatives and public health focused projects. As a parent of three young children and a child advocate in my work, I want the best for students across Arizona, and especially within TVUSD. Over the last year, I have provided leadership on critical issues, and much needed perspective as a parent with young children in the school district. I would be honored to continue to serve on the TVUSD Governing Board, and would appreciate your vote in the General Election on November 8, 2016.

DECLARACION DEL CANDIDATO A LA JUNTA DE GOBIERNO DEL DISTRITO ESCOLAR UNIFICADO NO. 13 DE TANQUE VERDE

Soy Susan Fry. Me presento a ser reelegida para la Junta de Gobierno del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tanque Verde (TVUSD) después de haberme unido a la Junta justo hace un año. Como la única miembro de la Junta con hijos jóvenes, y como una activa participante en las actividades escolares, estoy especialmente informada sobre los efectos de la política del distrito hasta el nivel más bajo. También trabajé en política de educación al más alto nivel, cuando dirigí un equipo de trabajo en todo el estado en nombre del Superintendente del Estado de Arizona, investigando la posibilidad de desarrollar e implementar un Inventario de Desarrollo de Jardines de Niños en Arizona. A través e ese trabajo, obtuve una exclusiva perspectiva de los problemas a los que se enfrentan los distritos escolares en todo el estado, a muchos de los cuales se enfrenta el TVUSD. Me esfuerzo en usar estas exclusivas perspectivas para formular soluciones bien pensadas que equilibren las necesidades de los estudiantes, padres, maestros/as y personal, con el fin de asegurar el mejor futuro posible para nuestros niños, nuestro distrito y nuestro estado. Durante mi tiempo en la Junta, he sido un pensadora independiente con el coraje de tratar difíciles cuestiones y trabajar con los otros miembros de la Junta para desarrollar soluciones razonables. Durante el último año, la Junta ha trabajado unida para llegar a acuerdos sobre varios temas, incluyendo la financiación de la Proposición 123 del año escolar 2016-2017, de la cual la Junta dirigió aproximadamente el 85% de los fondos a aumentar los salarios de los maestros/as y a aumentar los salarios del personal clasificado (por hora).

Además, el próximo año traerá al Distrito un cambio en el liderazgo, ya que el actual superintendente se va a retirar. Debemos ser deliberados en nuestro método para contratar a un nuevo líder, y abiertos a las opiniones y a la conversación con la comunidad. Además, el Distrito está considerando establecer un centro de niñez temprana (preescolar). Yo represento a la Junta de Gobierno en el comité preescolar, y mi experiencia en niñez temprana es valiosa durante este importante proceso de toma de decisiones. Soy una nativa de Tucson, y mi experiencia es en filantropía y la salud pública. Asistí a la Universidad de Stanford, y después obtuve un título de Maestría en Filantropía en la Universidad de Indiana y más tarde un título de Maestría en Salud Pública de la Universidad de Arizona (UofA). Crecí en una familia que ponía un gran énfasis en la educación, ya que mi padre fue profesor de ingeniería por mucho tiempo en la Universidad de Arizona. Soy propietaria de un pequeño negocio, y durante los últimos veinte años he trabajado en sectores de filantropía y de beneficencia en toda Arizona, dirigiendo grandes programas de subvenciones, supervisando programas de niñez temprana en todo el estado y ayudando con las actividades de reforma de la educación y proyectos enfocados en la salud pública. Como madre de tres niños jóvenes y abogada de los niños en mi trabajo, deseo lo mejor para todos los estudiantes en Arizona, y especialmente dentro del TVUSD. Durante el año pasado, proporcioné liderazgo en temas esenciales, y una perspectiva muy necesaria como madre con niños jóvenes en distrito escolar. Me sentiría honrada de continuar sirviendo en la Junta de Gobierno del TVUSD, y le apreciaría su voto en la Elección General del 8 de noviembre del 2016.
