CALL FOR REGISTRATION OF INTEREST AND ABSTRACTS Contemporary surveillance is characterised by ambiguities and asymmetries. Surveillance results from different desires and rationales: control, governance, security, profit, efficiency but also care, empowerment, resistance, and play. Furthermore it can have both positive and negative outcomes for individuals and these may lead to intended or unintended consequences. Surveillance is never neutral. Surveillance is always about power and that power is increasingly asymmetric. Surveillance practices are also changing and as 'smart' surveillance systems proliferate utilising and generating 'Big Data' new forms of ambiguity and asymmetry arise. Please title the Email "SSN Barcelona 2014" and include the following information: • Name • Country of residence • Institutional affiliation • Institutional address • Telephone number • Email address For paper givers a 300 word abstract will be required by 25 September 2013 and can be submitted on the following website: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ssn2014barcelona FEES AND LOCAL INFORMATION This is a non-residential conference and participants will need to make their own arrangements for accommodation (we will provide advice for this in due course). The Conference will be held at the University of Barcelona. The conference web site will be up and running from July providing full details of the emerging conference programme, transport and accommodation advice, payment details and a final booking form. The Conference Fee is 320 euro per person, which includes refreshments and

lunch and an optional 30 euro for two years' membership of the Surveillance Studies Network. The membership fee will be used to promote the charitable activities of the Surveillance Studies Network, support the continued publication of the Journal of Surveillance and Society and give other benefits to members. There will be 12 discounted places for PhD students which will be allocated on a first-come first serve basis to PhD students with an accepted abstract. The Organising Committee will also explore ways to offer reduced rates and facilitate participation of local participants, post docs and others who might not have access to academic resources. These will be announced in due course and will be allocated on a first-come first serve basis, so please register your interest as soon as possible. Desde el Panóptico y Gran Hermano, pasando por la integración de tecnologías de control remoto en el mundo de la seguridad y la recopilación masiva de datos gracias a las redes sociales y dispositivos móviles, la capacidad para vigilar es hoy más horizontal y cotidiana que nunca. En este contexto emergen lógicas de control, gobierno, seguridad, beneficio y eficiencia, pero también de cuidado, empoderamiento, resistencia y juego. El impacto de estos procesos puede ser positivo o negativo, previsto o imprevisto, pero la vigilancia no es jamás un proceso neutral. La vigilancia implica siempre mecanismos de poder, y el poder establece siempre relaciones asimétricas. Los espacios y prácticas de vigilancia están también en constante evolución, y la emergencia de las tecnologías inteligentes [smart] y del fenómeno del ‘Big Data’ genera nuevas formas de ambigüedad y nuevas asimetrías. COSTE DEL REGISTRO E INFORMACIÓN LOCAL

Las personas participantes deberán organizar su propio viaje y alojamiento (se proporcionará información al respecto en su momento). La conferencia se celebrará en la Universitat de Barcelona (UB) y la página web irá informando de las direcciones y el programa, así como sugerencias de transporte y alojamiento. El formulario de registro y los detalles para el pago del coste de inscripción estarán también disponibles a través de la página web. El coste de inscripción para la conferencia (dos días) es de 320 euros por persona, que incluyen las comidas y catering durante las pausas, así como los materiales de la conferencia. Los 320 euros incluyen también los 30 euros del coste de formar parte del Surveillance Studies Network durante dos años. Esta opción es voluntaria y las personas participantes pueden optar por no incluirla. Aquellas personas que la abonen estarán contribuyendo a las actividades del SSN y a la publicación de la revista académica Surveillance & Society. Se proporcionarán 12 plazas en la Conferencia SSN 2014 a estudiantes de doctorado a un precio reducido, que se asignarán por orden de registro y sólo en caso de propuestas aceptadas. Las personas interesadas deben registrarse lo antes posible y enviar su propuesta antes del 25 de septiembre de 2013. El Comité Organizador de la Conferencia SSN 2014 publicará otras opciones de registro con descuento en el momento de apertura del registro formal (30 de septiembre de 2013), que de nuevo serán asignadas en base a las circunstancias particulares de los participantes y por orden de registro.
