PUERTO RICO - OFICINA ESTATAL DE CONSERVACIÓN HISTÓRICA / STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE PROGRAMAS La OECH/SHPO desarrolla una variedad de actividades en su sede en el Cuartel de Ballajá, San Juan, y a través de los municipios de Puerto Rico, en atención al compromiso de educación y divulgación sobre aspectos relacionados a la conservación de nuestro patrimonio histórico/arqueológico. Estas actividades, orientadas a diversos sectores sociales, se llevan a cabo subsidiadas por el Fondo para la Conservación Histórica/ Historic Preservation Fund, asignado anualmente por el Congreso de EUA para el cumplimiento del mandato del National Historic Preservation Act (1966). Actividades Especiales Atender a grupos escolares de distintos niveles educativos y de diferentes municipios ha sido una de nuestras prioridades. A esos efectos se llevan a cabo actividades especiales en los meses de mayo Mes de la Conservación y noviembre – Mes de la Arqueología. En mayo, bajo el concepto Construyendo y Conservando Nuestra Comunidad, los estudiantes diseñan comunidades o construyen réplicas a escala de edificios, en sus pueblos, que están en el NRHP. En noviembre, con el tema de Detectives del Pasado, los estudiantes excavan en cajas o en bandejas (esto para niños con impedimentos) y descubren y clasifican artefactos precolombinos, coloniales o modernos. Otra tarea de divulgación claramente importante lo ha sido iniciar un programa de visitas y charlas o talleres en escuelas (K-12). A la fecha se han visitado 17 escuelas en 11 municipios.

Actividades de Divulgación Desde 2013 se están impartiendo, todos los meses, conferencias y charlas sobre investigaciones conducentes a nominaciones o proyectos de documentación de propiedades históricas (34 proyectos), subsidiados por el Historic Preservation Fund. En ese período, han sido alistadas en el NRHP 17 nuevas propiedades, en 13 municipios de PR. Se ha realizado también un congreso de Arqueología Industrial, se publicó la revista de la OECH y están en proceso otras publicaciones que complementan las tareas de divulgación.

PUERTO RICO - STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE / OFICINA ESTATAL DE CONSERVACIÓN HISTÓRICA PROGRAMS In order to realize its commitment to education and outreach on issues related to the preservation of our historical / archaeological heritage, the State Historic Preservation Office of Puerto Rico/ Oficina Estatal de Conservación Histórica has initiated various programs, both at the premises, in the Cuartel de Ballajá , San Juan, and throughout the municipalities of Puerto Rico. These activities aimed at all sectors of our heterogenous society, are subsidized by the Historic Preservation Fund / Fondo para la Conservación Histórica, allocated annually by the US Congress to fulfill the mandate under the National Historic Preservation Act (1966). Special Activities One of our priorities has been effectively addressing the needs of islandwide groups of different educational levels. We have given continuity to the traditional SHPO activites in the months of May Preservation Month, and November - Archaeology Month. In May, with the theme Building and Preserving Our Community, students design cardboard communities and build scale replicas of buildings, in their hometown, which are listed in the NRHP. In November, with the theme Detectives of the Past, students experience a “dig” in sand boxes or trays (disabled children) and discover and classify pre-Columbian, colonial and modern artifacts. Additionally, we have established a program of visits, lectures, and workshops in schools (K -12); to date we have visited 17 schools in 11 municipalities.

Outreach Activities Since 2013, we began a program of monthly conferences and lectures on the research and documentation projects funded by HPF. These studies have as an end result nominations of historic properties of Puerto Rico (34 projects in the last 3 years). During that period, 17 new properties in 13 municipalities have been listed in the NRHP. Another outreach effort is the publication of the OECH magazine and two books that are now in progress.
