ASSIGNMENT #1: Remembering Baptism, Anticipating your Confirmation (in Fall 2019) Instructions: Parents and youth should look over these basic and deeper questions together. After discussing each of these questions together, please have your candidate/child write a report that reflects on your discussions together. (250 words minimum; Be creative. Be expressive.) Be sure that the report does two (2) things: 1) Recalls the important details, people, and events of the candidate’s baptism, including why these are important. (Who, what, where, when, why, etc.) 2) Connects what happens in the Sacrament of Baptism with preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. (What will happen in Confirmation and what does that mean? How is this connected to what happened during baptism? How are these examples of God’s presence in our lives?) BASIC QUESTIONS (for your child to answer with your help) 1. Where were you baptized? Is this an important place to you or your family? How is this place an example of God’s enduring presence in your lives? 2. Who was at your baptism? Do these people still play an important role in your life? 3. What kinds of people were chosen to be your godparents? Is there someone who is close to you who can play a similar role now in your Confirmation as your sponsor? DEEPER QUESTIONS (for your child to answer with your help) 1. Have you seen a baptism celebrated at Christ the Redeemer or elsewhere? Why do you think people bring their children to be baptized into the Catholic church? 2. Name some things that happened during this/these baptismal celebration(s) and what they mean? (What rituals or symbols are used, for example). 3. Why do you want to bring yourself to meet the Bishop to be Confirmed in the Catholic church? Why does the church choose to welcome you in this way? What rituals and symbols will be used for this celebration? BONUS QUESTIONS 1. Consider the 7 traditional Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Pick one or two that you are drawn to at this time. Are these gifts particularly strong in you now? Or would you like them to develop more? (See page 23 of Your Child’s Confirmation for a list of these Gifts or page 8 of The Bishop’s Questions online). 2. Describe how you have used these gifts in your life currently or want them to grow more in the future. WHEN IS THIS REPORT DUE? Parents should hand in this assignment when they come to the February Meeting: TUE FEB 19 or THU FEB 28.
