Reading Mastery Plus, Level 5/Home Letter 1 (at Lesson 1) Dear Family, This year your child will be learning many new vocabulary words and comprehension skills in Reading Mastery Plus, Level 5. This is the year that your child will discover how exciting reading can be by reading full-length novels! Your child will also learn some very important skills necessary for research and for reading in a wide range of areas such as social studies and science. The skills taught in the Reading Mastery Plus, Level 5 lessons will reinforce good study habits and encourage a strong desire for learning about the world. Researchers have studied what makes students successful. They have discovered that when the family encourages the child to do well and gives the child home support in school work, the child does better in school. Any help you can give your child this year will make a big difference! Several times throughout this school year, I will be sending you the Reading Mastery Plus Home Letters to give you timely information on topics such as





information your child has been learning; vocabulary words to review; books to read together; an activity to help your child learn at home.

Even though the school term is just beginning, there are some things you can do now to help your child get started right.
Provide a quiet place for study. Set a regular homework time and encourage your child to stick to it. This will establish good study habits.
Ask your child what his or her homework assignments are. When your child states that homework is finished, ask your child to show you the completed work.
If the homework involves studying for a test or quiz, ask a few questions to make sure your child knows the information.
If your child has a project that is due after a period of time, write the date on a calendar and check progress daily. This will help prevent rushing at the last minute.
If your child doesn’t have a library card, take your child to the library and get one. You can help your child develop important skills for using the library by introducing him or her to the reference librarian. Reading Mastery Plus, Level 5/ Home Letter 5 (after Lesson 120) Dear Family, Your child has completed Level 5 of Reading Mastery Plus! We have worked on many reading, writing, language, and research skills this year. Your child is proud of the accomplishments made in these areas. Even though the school term is ending, there are many things you can do to help your child continue to improve on the reading, writing, language, and research skills learned this year.
Schedule regular visits to the library for your child to borrow books and magazines. Ask the librarian to recommend an author who is popular with children of your child’s age and then challenge your child to read as many books by that author as he or she can.


Encourage your child to spend time reading silently every day. Your child is now capable of reading a wide range of novels and nonfiction materials independently. Model the value of reading by choosing and reading a book yourself.
Continue to read to your child and have your child read to you, even if it is for only a few minutes each day. Share a good book together.
Keep paper, pens, and pencils available for writing. Ask your child to write something each day. Your child can write a journal, labels in a family photo-album or scrapbook, memoirs of family events or holidays, letters to friends and relatives, notes to you, lists of jobs to be done, items to be purchased at the grocery store, or to a pen pal.
