Pollution studies carried out in the last 30 years have reported: - Occurrence of heavy metals in water, sediments, SPM and organisms of the BBE (even no critical values have been observed) - Occurrence of POPs : PAHs, OCs, BTs - Decrease of several pollutants (i.e., Hg) along the studied period - Identification of incipient ecosystem responses to CGC

Next steps planned on these studies: - Application of indicators strategies (bioindicators and geoindicators) - Use of early warning systems (i.e. biomarkers) - Assessment of groundwater effect and influence on the estuary - Comparison of the identified processes with those from tropical estuaries
