Introduction: I´m a teacher of ELE (Spanish as a foreign language). Most of my students speak English who struggle with the Spanish verbs. In preparing this lesson, I have taken into account one of the key factors that professor John Macbeath presented: “Learners and their learning are the centre of all planning”. Therefore, my proposal for this lesson plan is about Spanish verbs and for learning to take place, we will see an explanation which comes along with several games that will help my students to practice them so the lesson will be more enjoyable and students will engage easily. Or at least, I hope so.

Lesson Plan: Spanish verbs, present simple. (For A1 level) Vebs are words that in most of the cases we use to express actions. For example: Run (correr), jump (saltar), live (vivir), etc. While there are others that are not actions, such as for example: be (ser/estar), have (haber/tener), among others.

4

The main caracteristic of the Spanish verbs is that there are many changes in them that complete the information and generate changes in their meaning. These changes are produced at the end of the verb and they give us information about: - Who is speaking (singular or plural, personal pronoun) - In what tense (present, past, future) - If the action is completed or not (perfect or imperfect tense) - The frame where the communication is being produced. (Description, wish, order) (Indicativo, subjuntivo e imperativo) In Spanish we have what we call “Formas no personales” and these are: infinitive (infinitivo), past participle (participio) and gerung (Gerundio).

The infinitive is like the name of the verb and we have three different endings. - Ar (1st conjugation) cantar (sing), hablar (talk), plantar (grow) - Er (2nd conjugation) leer (read), comer (eat), tener (have) - Ir (3rd conjugation) sentir (feel), exprimir (squeeze), vivir (live)

5

The gerund is the verb ending in _ing in English and it conveys the idea of a progressive action. You can form it by adding to the root –endo or –ando. For instance: Cantando (singing), comiendo (eating) The past participle Depending on the conjugation there are different endings as well. Here it is the most complicated aspect, because every form of the personal pronoun has an ending. The regular vebs follow the same pattern but we will find irregular verbs that have some variations in structure. Let´s see the regular first. In this lesson we will have a look at the present simple. (presente simple del modo indicativo)

1st conjugation AR Sing (cantar) -Yo cant -o - tú cant –as - él cant –a

6

- nosotros cant –amos - vosotros cant –áis - ellos cant –an 2nd conjugation eat (comer) - Yo com –o - Tú com –es - Él com –e - Nosotros com –emos - Vosotros com –éis - Ellos com –en 3rd conjugation live (vivir) - Yo viv –o - Tú viv –es - Él viv –e - Nosotros viv –imos - Vosotros viv –ís - Ellos vivi –en

7

If you have noticed the regular verbs have a part or root that doesn´t change (lexema o raíz). Usually you can get that root when you take of the infinitive the –AR, -Er or –IR. Cant/ar, com/er, viv/ir Afterwards, you add the different endings, depending on the conjugation. There are different ones according to the tense we are using but for now we are seeing the present. Below you have a sort of cheat sheet which will help you to remember and practice the regular and irregular verbs.

Put together both pages, the first one on the second like if it was a book and you are ready to start. Let´s see now the irregular vebs. We can group them according to the vowels present in the root or lexeme. - Completely irregular: ser (be), ir (go), estar (be) - Vowel change in the base: Here I give you a slide that will help you to remember them easily.

13

And finally, we are going to see, when to use the present (presente simple del modo indicativo) It is used for: - To describe actions or situations simultaneous when speaking or in a conversation. (Presente actual). - To express actions that are happening while we are speaking and are extended for a while without interruptions. (Presente durativo). - To express routines, habits or actions repeated frequently. (Presente habitual). - To present future facts that the person who is speaking is sure about its fulfillment. (Presente con valor de futuro).

I know, it is not very easy but with practice you will

get it.

To help you out I´m going to attach some games and activities will help you to learn them and have fun. 1)

K

Describe the following picture using present simple.

15

2)

Using the following picture, can you explain to your classmate what can you do in summer?

16

For example: Este verano puedo ….  Teacher´s note: explain the meaning of the vocabulary found in the image such as for example: mojito, tatuaje, bengala or Perseidas) Now among all the things that are listed above can you talk to your teacher or collegue about things you like or dislike. Follow these structures: En verano, me gusta… En verano, no me gusta… 3)

darte Sin miedo a que lo puedas romper. Aunque lo puedas romper Aunque lo puedas romper Aunque lo puedas romper. - Do you like animals? Do you have any pet? While I was listening to this song, it reminded me my dog Noah, who died some years ago but I have some of my best memories next to him. Do you want to share with us how is your relationship with your pet? For example: Mi mascota favorita es… Me gusta porque….. 4)

Game: Juego de la oca. All together. The group can participate. You have a board with different squares. In each one of them, there´s a verb. We through the dice and advance according to the number we get and in the square where we are, we have to conjugate the verb. If it´s regular we will get one point and if it´s irregular and we do it well, we´ll get two points. The winner will

22

be the player who finish the race getting the best score. (You will need a dice and game tokens).

Good luck! Enjoy it!!!!!

23

Personal reflection: Meditating and reviewing on what I presented as my lesson plan, I realized that there were some aspects that I did not pay too much attention to and this time as a final project, I decided to include. For example, I care some details in the presentation and design of the unit, I have also included on the first page a summary about the kind of student who is addressed and objectives that are presented basically. That is, what my pretensions with this unit are and I finally added some exercises that include the practice of composition and writing, use simple expressions and present, which was the backbone of my unit; all it designed with the intention that they learn playing and participating with other peers so that students do not feel that loneliness that sometimes accompanies the student of a foreign language. The lengh of the unit could be more than an hour so, I need to be adaptable and depending on the progress of the class and how the students feel, I will choose to remove some of them.

The feedback received during the course and other partners has helped me a lot and I am very grateful. Teaching and learning are something that are experienced in the company of others.
