We are happy you have decided to marry in the Catholic Church and will be receiving the Sacrament of Matrimony. There is education and preparation for all the sacraments of the faith, and this guide will help you choose the best class for you.
The name “PreCana” comes from the Wedding Feast at Cana, where Jesus performed his first public miracle, changing water into wine. Pre means before, so before your personal Wedding Feast at Cana, your own wedding day, we help you prepare for the sacrament and start on your journey to a happy, healthy, and holy lifelong marriage.
Getting Married in the Archdiocese of Chicago Schedule and introductory meeting with your priest or deacon
Meet with your priest or deacon before you commit to a wedding date, and read through your parish’s marriage guidelines. You can ask about appropriate music for the ceremony, and begin to fill out some of the required paperwork. If you are getting married outside of the Archdiocese of Chicago you will have to meet with the priest preparing you for marriage (local) and be in contact with the priest witnessing your ceremony (remote).
Take a premarital inventory
The inventories recommended by the Archdiocese of Chicago are both research and scientifically based with a Catholic understanding of marriage. They are the Catholic Couple Check Up, available at pvm.archchicago.org, or FOCCUS. Both inventories can be taken online.
Attend a marriage preparation class
Classes are listed on the next page. Register online at pvm.archchicago.org or call 312.534.8351. In addition to taking a PreCana class, you may also be interested in our supplemental videos about topics unique to your own experience. Videos about ceremony planning, cohabitation, children of divorce, forming a step-family, inter church and interfaith, military, second marriages, and African American marriages are available on www.familyministries.org.
Attend a natural family planning class
Learn about the only method of family planning morally acceptable to Catholic teaching. Information about this can be found on pvm.archchicago.org.
Follow-up with your priest or deacon
Discuss any concerns raised in your marriage preparation class, share the results of the premarital inventory, and review the ceremony details with the priest or deacon that will be presiding over your ceremony. Complete the required paperwork and review the readings and music you have chosen.
Purchase a marriage license and attend the wedding rehearsal
Be sure you buy your marriage license at least, but no more than, 60 days before your ceremony. The wedding rehearsal takes place at your church with those involved in the ceremony as determined by your priest or deacon.
Enjoy your wedding day as you receive the sacrament of matrimony

Precana
Engaged couples can attend a one day PreCana class held on a Saturday and led by a trained married couple at a variety of parishes. Through short talks, sharing of the facilitators’ own experiences, group exercises, and personal reflection, couples are guided through topics useful for a successful future marriage. Some of the topics presented are: the sacrament of marriage, couple prayer, family of origin, couple adjustment and growth, Catholic faith, natural family planning, conflict management, finances, and children. Class starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. with a one hour lunch break. You will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the day which fulfills the marriage preparation requirement in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The fee for PreCana is $195 per couple. This covers the cost of the program, continental breakfast, handouts, workbooks, resources, and site rental. If you are separated by distance and unable to attend a gathered PreCana, you may get permission from your priest or deacon to take the class online at catholicmarriageprepclass.com.

This seminar is about the Vocation and Sacrament of Marriage. It can help you rediscover or discover for the first time the beauty, truth, and goodness of the Catholic faith relating to marriage. The pedagogical approach to the seminar is threefold: presentations teach and assist couples to see how the Catholic faith relates to marriage and family life and are then followed by reflection, discussion, and prayer. Natural Family Planning A Healthy Option for a Lifetime of Love
Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for natural, healthy, and morally acceptable methods of fertility management that follow Catholic teaching to help couples space, achieve, or avoid pregnancy.
These methods are scientific, completely safe, natural, have no side effects, and do not involve the use of any medications, drugs, hormones, or devices. The three methods taught in the Archdiocese of Chicago are: the Billings Ovulation MethodTM, the Sympto-Thermal Method, and the Creighton Model System. Classes are offered in English, Spanish, and Polish at a variety of locations. You are encouraged to learn NFP four to six months before your wedding. Precaná
La Arquidiócesis de Chicago ofrece dos tipos de clases de preparación matrimonial: PreCaná Regular y PreCaná Especial.
PreCaná Regular es para las parejas que no viven juntas y no están casadas por el civil. PreCaná Especial es para las parejas que están casadas por lo civil o están viviendo juntas y ahora desean casarse por la iglesia. La clase comienza a las 8:30 a.m. y termina a las 5:30 p.m. con una hora para el almuerzo. Podrán traer su propio almuerzo o algún dinero extra para comprarlo. Su inversión de $180 por pareja cubre el costo del programa, el manual, un libro de oraciones y material para la clase y la renta del centro. Ustedes recibirán el certificado de participación al finalizar el día. Sin ese certificado no podrán contraer matrimonio. Si por motivos de distancia ustedes no pueden estar juntos en su clase de PreCaná, pueden tomar la clase en línea en la página preparacionmatrimonialcatolica.com. Planificación Familiar Natural Una opción sana para una vida de amor
Planificación Familiar Natural (PFN) es un término general de los métodos naturales, que ayudan a las parejas a manejar su fertilidad de una forma sana, saludable y moralmente aceptable según la enseñanza Católica, para espaciar, lograr o evitar el embarazo. Estos métodos son científicos, totalmente naturales, no implican el uso de medicamentos, drogas, hormonas o dispositivos, son seguros, y no tienen efectos secundarios. 1. Wstępne spotkanie z księdzem lub pomocnikiem duszpasterskim. 2. Ewaluacja przedmałżeńska i dyskusja. 3. Uczestnictwo w kursie przedmałżeńskim organizowanym przez parafię lub Archidiecezję. 4. Dodatkowe materiały filmowe dostosowane do różnych sytuacji życiowych. 5. Wykład na temat naturalnego planowania rodziny. 6. Konsultacja z księdzem lub pomocnikiem duszpasterskim. 7. Naturalne planowanie rodziny Zdrowy wybór dla miłości na całe życie
Naturalne planowanie rodziny (NPR) jest ogólnym terminem obejmującym różne naturalne metody stosowane w celu zajścia w ciążę, odłożenia jej na później lub w celu całkowitego zrezygnowania z posiadania potomstwa. Metody te oparte są na wynikach badań naukowych i stałej obserwacji naturalnie powracających znaków i symptomów dni płodnych i niepłodnych w kobiecym cyklu miesięcznym. NPR szanuje godność ludzkiej osoby w kontekście małżeństwa i życia rodziny. Pozwala pozostać otwartym na samo życie oraz ułatwia głębsze zrozumienie wartości, jaką jest dziecko. Dzięki wzajemnemu obdarowywaniu się miłością i dawaniu życia, NPR pogłębia i zacieśnia także więź między mężem a żoną. Istnieją różne metody naturalnego planowania rodziny, ale najbardziej nowoczesnymi i najczęściej stosowanymi są Metoda Owulacji Billingsa (Billings Ovulation Method), metoda objawowo-termiczna (Sympto-Thermal Method) oraz Model Creighton’a (Creighton Model System). Wykłady prowadzone są w języku angielskim i hiszpańskim w różnych miejscach na terenie naszej archidiecezji.
