Dear United ISD Parents/Guardians:

Whether you are a returning family or new to United ISD, we warmly welcome you the 20192020 school year. The number of campuses in our district continues to grow, and this year we are opening the doors to two new campuses built under the charge of the Bond 2013. Those campuses include the Lyndon B. Johnson High School 9th Grade Campus and the brand new campus for Salinas Elementary. Throughout the year, we also expect to see great progress on the construction of Elementary #31 at The Coves and our state-of-the-art Aquatic Center, located on the grounds of the United ISD Student Activity Complex. The summer months have been a busy time for United ISD teachers and administrators who have been preparing classrooms, lesson plans, and projects that will lead to another successful and productive school year. The first day of school for all United ISD students will be on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, and this Back to School Parent Connection is designed to serve as a guide for you and your child. I courteously ask that you take a few moments to review the valuable information contained within this publication. Should you have any questions about any of the information in this guide, please contact your child’s campus administrator or our administrative offices. I also ask parents to pay close attention to the information that your child brings home for your review. Please complete and sign all forms that require a parent /guardian signature and return them promptly to the school.

I believe our students deserve a bright future and a lifetime of success and achievement. As Superintendent of United ISD schools, I will continue to maintain high expectations for our faculty with the understanding that continued cooperation between colleagues, administrators and parents is essential to helping our students reach their goals. In closing, I would also like to accentuate the value of community involvement as it pertains to student success and security at our campuses. I implore parents to establish strong lines of communication with their child’s teachers, and ask them to communicate suspicious activity at school or on social media to a United ISD Administrator or the United ISD Police Department. Provisional : “All immunizations should be completed by the first date of attendance. The law requires that students be fully vaccinated against the specified diseases.” A student may enroll in school provisionally, if the student has received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine. In order to remain enrolled the student must complete the required subsequent doses of each vaccine within 30 days from enrollment. “If, at the end of the 30-day period, a student has not received a subsequent dose of vaccine, the student is not in compliance and the school shall exclude the student from school attendance until the required dose is administered” according to the Texas Department of State Human Services.

Conscientious Objector students will be registered if all documents are in place including TB test.

Prescription Medications in School Nurses across the district have seen a rise in students carrying their own medications. To ensure that all students are kept safe, it is United ISD’s policy and proactive approach to prohibit any student from carrying any kind of medication, prescribed or over the counter, without proper documentation from a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas. Medications students are not allowed to carry are, the following but not limited to: cough drops, any chewable medications, throat sprays. Students who have pre-existing medical conditions that require a school nurse to administer medications are encouraged to communicate their needs to school personnel prior to the start of the school year to ensure that all the proper documentation is submitted on time. In addition, all over-the-counter medications must be labeled, so the nurse can administer the medication to the child. Parents are responsible for keeping school personnel up to date and informed of any potential allergic reactions to medications or foods and any medical conditions.

Since United ISD policy prohibits students from carrying their own medication, it is required that a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas complete all District Medical Administration Forms needed for campus nurses to administer the medications, whether prescribed or over the counter. Children whose doctors recommend that students carry their medications due to a pre-existing condition will need to pick up a Self-Administration Medication Release Form from their school and have their physician’s office complete the form. After having a doctor complete all the necessary paperwork parents will need to bring in the medication in a properly labeled container. For prescription medication, it is required that the pharmacy label accompany the medication. All physician orders must match the orders on the container of the prescribed medication. Only when all of the proper documentation is received will school nurses administer or allow students to carry and self-administer their medications. These practices are set to protect all students. It is our effort to ensure that students’ needs are met while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all.

UNITED ISD SCHOOL BOND 2013

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS UPDATE

United ISD is proud to report significant progress in a number of projects funded by School Bond 2013. The following campuses will be completed between August 2019 and August 2020.

Salinas Elementary School

Opening A

3611 Alfredo Cantu Drive

The new Salinas Elementary campus is an impressive prototype of modern design. The full masonry single story 104,445 square foot veneer building will easily accommodate approximately 950 young students. The main building entrance incorporates a security station manned by district police officers who monitor day to day activities and control the entry and exit of students, parents, employees and other visitors. Over 45 classrooms overlook an enclosed courtyard which includes 28 standard classrooms and 16 early childhood classrooms. This campus also includes two special education classrooms, two state-ofthe art computer labs, a multi-purpose room, a science classroom and a music room. The campus also has a multi-purpose gymnasium that serves as a stage for school events and performances, as well as a spacious and efficient library and staff areas.

The campus also has a perimeter vehicular loop that services strategic drop-off points to each wing. There is ample visitor parking near the main entrance and separate parking for staff. Salinas Elementary School is located at 3611 Alfredo Cantu Drive, and will open this August.

Lyndon B. Johnson 9th Grade Campus 5511 St. Luke Blvd.

The new Lyndon B. Johnson 9th Grade Campus is a standalone two-story masonry veneer building with a detached FFA building totaling 201,346 square feet. The new structure accommodates 1,200 students, and includes a parking lot design that accommodates approximately 250 vehicles. The facility has 30 classrooms, six science lecture labs with three shared prep rooms, six Business Information Magnet Labs, and an Introduction to CTE Magnet Lab.

Finally, a yet-to-be-named elementary campus (#31) is under construction in the Coves at Winfield. Specifications for this project are identical to those of the new Salinas Elementary School. The campus is expected to reach completion in time for the start of the 2020 school year.

The Fine Arts Department includes two Art Labs and a dance studio, and Athletics and P.E. share a competition and practice gym with access to outdoor sport fields. Security for the campus will start at the perimeter with a guardhouse- followed by a security station located in the main entrance foyer. The Lyndon B. Johnson 9th Grade Campus is located at 5511 St. Luke Blvd. and will open this August.

United ISD Aquatic Center Ready to Make a Splash in 2021 Opening J a n u a ry 2021

The United ISD Aquatic Center will be a 49,000 sq. ft. space encompassing two aquatic venues that feature an eight-lane fifty-meter competition pool and a fourlane eighteen-meter adaptive pool. The center also provide adequate facilities for interscholastic, and potentially intercollegiate competitions of any aquatic discipline and future diving programs. The design of the building will provide seating for 800 spectators and an additional 700 seats for participants and coaching staffs. Moreover, the facility will be furnished with professional-grade timing equipment. A customized adaptive pool will meet the needs of handicapped and special-needs swimmers. Total estimated cost for the project is 18.5 million dollars, which will be paid with monies from the County School Land Fund and the United ISD General Fund. The facility is scheduled to open by 2020.

Perfect Attendance Program Continues for all Students

Student success begins with daily school attendance. This is why United ISD will once again be implementing its “Every Day Counts” perfect attendance incentive program for the upcoming school year. Any elementary and middle school student, who works to attain perfect attendance every six weeks, can be eligible to win prizes at their respective campus. All students at an elementary or middle school are eligible to be entered for the grand prize drawing at their campus if he or she has had perfect attendance (no excused or unexcused absences) for the entire six weeks period starting with the 1st six weeks period (in all classes). Additionally, students at each high school will have a perfect attendance incentive as well. Called the “Never Be Absent” program, students who have perfect attendance have a chance to have their name entered to win an allexpense paid trip to San Antonio which includes a four day, three night stay at the J.W. Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, four season passes to Fiesta Texas, and four movie passes to Santikos Palladium IMAX Theatre. This program, is being done in conjunction with the Sames “Kia in the Klassroom” car give-a-way program, where a high school student can win a brand new Kia. With the inception of the new accountability system in 2018, United ISD continues to surpass the state and Region I in performance at the approaches level on STAAR for grades 3 - 8 in all content areas. In 2018 United ISD was 1 of 153 districts earning an “A” rating from TEA and the only district with comparable demographics to earn an A. Final ratings will be made public on August 15, 2019 for all campuses and districts in the state of Texas. 8th & 9th Grade Students to Receive Dell ChromeBooks United ISD continues to enhance the learning environment for students by introducing a student 1:1 Mobile Learning Device initiative starting Fall, 2019. The initiative will include all 8th and 9th Grade students in addition to Middle School STEM cohort students at United Middle, LBJ Early College High School and the Biotechnology Life Science Innovative Academy. Middle School 8th graders will have the option to use this new plan as well as every new cohort of 9th graders. At the end of a student’s four-year high school term, their devices will be available for purchase at a nominal fee. While the device will be issued at no cost to the student, parents/guardians will be responsible for maintenance, repairs, and a replacement costs for the device if it is lost, stolen or broken. The district will only handle warranty issues. Participating middle and high school campuses will offer parents the option to review and accept the District’s new 1:1 Mobile Learning Device Guidelines. This new initiative will provide students with a new Dell Chromebook to use in school and at home. Students will be able to access their web-based textbooks, resources, their electronic academic portfolios and any other online instructional materials including the Districts Content and Learning Management System.

Additionally, students will be able to view, complete and submit daily assignments and work collaboratively on projects using the Google Cloud environment. Whether students are on the districts network or accessing the internet via a personal provider, the district’s filtering system will continue to monitor their use to keep them safe. This new initiative along with carts of Chromebook’s in grades 3-7 will support the District’s technology integrated curriculum and also the College, Career and Military Readiness indicators that are part of our state accountability standards. Placing a device in the hands of students for school and home use will allow them to do their work in class and to collaborate and communicate from anywhere with other students and their teachers. With more than 37,000 Mobile Learning Devices already in the hands of over 43,000 students, the District’s decision to transition into a personal student device was made based on great results at pilot studies conducted at LBJ High School Early Colleges and the United Middle STEM Program.

United ISD Enhances Security Throughout the District In an effort to enhance security measures, United ISD has incorporated the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). This program is complete with a set of preset plans, commands, and responses to critical incidents that may arise during the school day. The five simple commands, encompassed in the manual and featured in the poster, make it easier for students and staff to understand their role and expected response to and during an emergency. The goal of providing students with a standardized approach to safety is to minimize anxiety and confusion during an emergency situation. By standardizing the response and actions taken by campus personnel, law enforcement can respond using the same plan, the same language, and what actions will be taking place for each type of emergency that may occur. The key to SRP is that there are simple commands used throughout the program between students, staff, and first responders using common terminology which allows everyone to operate and respond in a coordinated manner. Each action has specific set of instructions on what to do if you find yourself in a crisis and each action is followed by directives on how to achieve that. The District understands the importance of keeping parents informed on what measures are in place within our schools. Be a Parent Si gn up tod ay! United ISD values parental involvement and encourages parents to be an approved parent volunteer at their child’s campus. Approved parent volunteers may participate in scheduled field experiences with their child and their classmates, assist with class events, and coach various sports offered through the Boys and Girls Club. New Parent Volunteers to the District: In order to be a new parent volunteer at United ISD for the 2019-2020 school year, parents are required to complete an application and clear a no-cost Criminal History Record Form provided by the District. Additionally, new applicants must provide proof of a recent T.B. test. Returning Parent Volunteers: Parents who were approved volunteers during the 2018-2019 school year will be renewed for the new school year after meeting the following condition: • Complete the no cost Criminal History Record Form and submit to your child’s campus. Once form is processed and applicant is cleared, the campus will be advised of clearance and name of volunteer will be added to approved list of campus volunteers. The application process for the 2019-2020 school year begins on August 1, 2019. Applications for parent volunteers can be printed out for completion by visiting www.uisd.net and clicking on the “For Parents” section. Applications may also be picked up at school campuses or at the District’s Admissions/Attendance/Drop Out Recovery Office located at 201 Lindenwood Drive. 2020 League of Legends Program Announced At United ISD, learning and success go far. As such, the United Independent School District would like to recognize extraordinary alumni whose achievements exemplify the values and the foundation that their high school education has contributed towards their success.

United ISD continues to honor Distinguished Alumni. United ISD will begin to accept nominations for the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Class from October 1, 2019 through January 15, 2020. If you know of any outstanding United ISD Alumni please submit their nomination to the Office of the Superintendent. CRITERIA: An alumni who is being nominated for the award must have graduated from a United ISD High school at least 5 years from date of nomination. This recognition can be earned by demonstrating, outstanding service to our country, community or to others in need; also for achieving recognition, having made exceptional contributions to his/ her profession or career; and lastly for philanthropy, those who have made significant contributions in their field/ community; and/or to any worthy cause. Members of the community may nominate an individual who fits the criteria. The individual making the nomination shall submit details/resume about the individual including the achievements of the individual. The documentation shall include references (such as written documentation or personal reference) that can verify the achievement(s).

dosis requerida (se recomienda una dosis de refuerzo Meningococcal* 1 entre los 16-18 años de edad) Información para los residentes de Texas: El padre o tutor legal debe presentar una declaración jurada firmada indicando que rechazan las vacunas por razones de conciencia, incluyendo las creencias religiosas de la persona. La declaración jurada será válida por un periodo de dos años. El estudiante que no haya recibido las vacunas requeridas por razones de conciencia, incluyendo creencias religiosas, podría ser excluido de la escuela en caso de una emergencia o epidemia declarada por el comisionado de salud pública. Se permiten exenciones médicas, así como exenciones para miembros del servicio activo de las fuerzas armadas estadounidenses.

“Todas las vacunas deben ser aplicadas antes del primer día de asistencia. La ley requiere que los estudiantes estén completamente vacunados contra ciertas enfermedades”. El estudiante puede inscribirse en la escuela de forma provisional si ha recibido al menos una dosis de cada vacuna pertinente para su edad. Para continuar inscrito, el alumno debe recibir las dosis posteriores requeridas de cada vacuna antes de 30 días a partir del momento de su inscripción. “Si al final del periodo de 30 días el estudiante no ha recibido las otras dosis de la vacuna, no cumple con los requisitos establecidos y la escuela lo excluirá de asistir a clases hasta que se apliquen las dosis requeridas”, de acuerdo con el Departamento de Servicios Humanos del Estado de Texas.

Los estudiantes que se rehúsen a vacunarse serán inscritos si todos los documentos están en regla, incluyendo el examen de la tuberculosis.

Administración de medicamentos recetados

Las enfermeras del distrito han visto un aumento en los estudiantes que llevan sus propios medicamentos. Para preservar el bienestar de todos los alumnos, la política de United ISD y un enfoque proactivo prohíben que los estudiantes traigan consigo cualquier medicamento, recetado o de venta libre, sin la debida documentación de un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas.

Los medicamentos que no se permiten que los estudiantes lleven consigo son, pero no se limitan a los siguientes: pastillas para la tos, cualquier medicamento masticable, aerosoles para la garganta, etc.

Se exhorta a que los alumnos que padezcan una enfermedad médica pre-existente que requieran de la administración de un medicamento por parte de la enfermera escolar, comuniquen de manera proactiva sus necesidades al personal antes de iniciar el ciclo escolar para asegurar que toda la documentación requerida se presente oportunamente. Además, todos los medicamentos de venta sin receta médica también deben contar con una etiqueta para que la enfermera pueda administrar dicho medicamento al menor. Los padres son responsables de mantener al personal escolar actualizado e informado de las posibles reacciones alérgicas a medicamentos o alimentos y cualquier padecimiento médico.

Debido a que la política del distrito prohíbe que los alumnos lleven consigo sus propios medicamentos, es muy importante que un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas llene todos los formularios de administración médica del distrito requeridos para que las enfermeras escolares lo administren, ya sea recetado o de venta libre. Los estudiantes, cuyos médicos recomienden llevar consigo los medicamentos debido a una enfermedad médica pre-existente, tendrán que recoger en su escuela un formulario de Autorización para la auto-administración de medicamentos y llevarlo con su médico para que lo llene.

Después de que el médico haya contestado la documentación necesaria, los padres necesitan llevar el medicamento en un recipiente debidamente etiquetado. Se recomienda que los medicamentos recetados traigan la etiqueta de la farmacia donde se adquirieron. Todas las órdenes de los médicos deben coincidir con lo escrito en el envase del medicamento. Solamente cuando se hayan recibido todos los documentos requeridos, la enfermera escolar administrará o permitirá que los alumnos lleven consigo sus medicamentos para su auto-administración. Se establecen estos requisitos no solamente para proteger a su hijo, sino a todos los estudiantes. Es nuestro esfuerzo asegurar que se cumpla con las necesidades de los alumnos mientras se mantiene un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y positivo para todos.
