Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR/NOTAS DEL PARROCO On Thursday of this week, October 1, we celebrate the memorial of one of the most beloved saints of all times. The fact that she is known at all is one of the miracles of her life. St. Thérèse of Lisieux, who died at the young age of 24, could hardly have had a more unassuming and obscure life. She was born in 1873 and suffered the loss of her mother when she was just four years old. Her family was very pious and her two older sisters entered the Carmelite Order as soon as they came of age. Thérèse never had the slightest doubt that she wanted to follow them, but of course the local Bishop and the superior of the convent insisted she wait until she was old enough. So determined was her resolve to become a Carmelite nun that on a trip to Rome with her father, she appealed to Pope Leo XIII to waive the minimum age for her. Finally, at age 15, she was allowed to enter the Order. Even in the context of religious life, Thérèse was almost immediately recognized by the other nuns for her special spiritual gifts. This recognition wasn’t because of great visions or intellectual activity on Thérèse’s part, but rather the absolute simplicity of her temperament. She truly believed that Christian perfection was within the grasp of every person and that she would pursue what she called “my little way” to achieve it. By this Thérèse meant that through simply doing the ordinary tasks that are set before us, but by doing them entirely for God, we could reach the highest levels of holiness. Of course, she was devoted to the Eucharist, to reading the Bible and to such spiritual authors as St. Francis de Sales, St. John of the Cross and Teresa de Avila. She also dreamed of going as a missionary to Vietnam, but her poor health prevented her doing so. Thérèse at 22 began to experience the first sign of the tuberculoses. Her physical and spiritual sufferings were excruciating, but she continued to offer herself to God. At the urging of her superiors, while bedridden Thérèse began to compose her great spiritual testament, The Story of a Soul, from which we derive much of our knowledge of her inner life. She died in 1897, and her cult spread at an extraordinary rate. Soon there were churches everywhere dedicated to her. Thérèse had written that she would spend her life in heaven doing good on earth “as long as there are souls to be saved.” At the time of her death there was a fifty-year waiting period before a cause for sainthood could be initiated, but in her case this was waived and Saint Thérèse was beatified in 1923 and canonized in 1925, only twenty-seven years after her death. In the homily for her canonization, Pope Pius XI said that Thérèse had achieved sanctity, “without going beyond the common order of things.” Because of the large numbers of people who flocked to her place of burial, a large basilica was built in Lisieux, France in 1926. Thousands of pilgrims conFr. Ulysses tinue to visit her shrine each year.
