Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notas del Párroco

On Friday of this week, we will celebrate the memorial of a saint who has only been on the Church Calendar for five years. When a saint is assigned a date in the liturgical calendar, it is customary the date of the saint’s death. But for Pope (now Saint) John XXIII, October 11 was chosen. It was on this date in 1962 that Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council, the most important event in the Church in many centuries. The Holy Father was at the time 80 years old, so it surprised everyone that he would undertake such a momentous task at his age. Nonetheless, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Pope John felt strongly that the Church needed what he called an aggiornamento, an updating and a fresh outlook so that the Church could respond to the many challenges of the the 20th century. Born in 1881 into a poor family of sharecroppers with thirteen children, no one could have guessed that this boy named Angelo Roncalli would one day lead the Church of Rome into a new era. He early discerned a vocation to the priesthood. His pious family struggled to send their son to the seminary which was a big expense for them as well as the loss of another breadwinner for the home. Angelo was an excellent student, so much so that after graduation he was sent to receive a doctorate in theology. Once ordained, he quickly showed himself to be a capable administrator as well as a holy and effective priest. Recognizing his talents, Angelo’s superiors continue to task him with greater responsibilities. He was eventually named papal nuncio to Bulgaria where he worked tirelessly both to make accords with the Orthodox Church as well as to preserve Church freedom. Eventually, he was elevated to the post of Cardinal Archbishop (or Patriarch) of Venice. On the death of Pope Pius XII 1958, Archbishop Angelo Roncalli was called to Rome along with the other cardinals to elect a new pope. He was surprised and humbled when he was chosen. Though his reign as pope was only 5 years, John XXIII (as he named himself) has had a lasting effect on our Church, especially as regards the reform of the Liturgy of the Mass, the openness and encouragement of lay ministries, the ecumenical bond with other Christian churches as well as with the Jewish faith. He will be remembered always for his exuberant personality and the great love and concern he demonstrated to others. Pope John XXIII was canonized together with Pope John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27th, 2014. As extraordinary as it was to be canonizing two popes in the same ceremony, it was equally amazing and unprecedented to have two living popes, Benedict XVI and our current Holy Father, Frances I, both as celebrants at the liturgy. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises
