Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

On Monday of this past week we began our liturgical journey (until Ash Wednesday on February 10th) through what the Church has named “Ordinary Time.” In English and in Spanish the word ‘ordinary’ generally means something common, something not at all special. But the Latin word from which it is derived refers not to what is boring, but rather to that which is ordered or numbered. We use the same term when we speak of ordinal numbers: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etcetera. So the Sundays of Ordinary Time are identified by their number. This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time occurs between the great Seasons of the Church year which are Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Advent and Christmas celebrate that period during which we are anxiously awaiting the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus, as well as the time immediately after Christ’s nativity. Lent/Easter is that period when we prepare ourselves through fasting, prayer and acts of charity to celebrate the greatest feast of all, the Paschal feast of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection from the dead. The Gospel readings at Mass in those seasons are focused, then, on the first and last periods of Jesus’ life. On the other hand, during the many weeks of Ordinary Time we have an opportunity to reflect on the ministry of Jesus, his relationship with his disciples, his extraordinary miracles and cures, and his preaching of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Old Testament readings during Ordinary Time are carefully coordinated with the Gospel readings to show how Jesus’ life and teachings are a fulfillment of God’s ancient covenant with his chosen people. We also read the letters of St. Paul to his communities of converts, letters which offer a profound theological and spiritual background to belief in Jesus Christ as our Savior. So there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is very much like our own lives. Between the great events that we celebrate or remember in a special way -- our birthdays, our wedding anniversaries, the deaths of our cherished loved ones and so on -- we also must honor the day-today, the regular rhythm of work and chores and leisure and sleep. For all of us who do our best to live as Christ taught us to live and to follow him daily, there is much that is to be discovered in ordinary time -- the precious hours we spend with family and friends, the great good that we can do as Christians simply by being kind to one another, by helping whomever we can, even by merely offering, as Jesus said, a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty. In such ordinary moments as these, our lives are made rich and our souls can touch the infinite. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises

January 17, 2016 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mary, whom Catholic tradition names “Mother of Mercy,” at Cana intercedes with her Son to show mercy toward the bridal couple: “Son, they have no wine.” But he does more! Jesus’ transformation of water into wine is a “sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus’ person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.” During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God’s mercy.—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
