This Friday, August 4, we’ll celebrate the birthday into heaven of one of the Church’s most interesting saints, Jean Vianney, also know as the Curé of Ars. Jean Vianney is considered the patron saint of parish priests, and he is especially honored by seminarians and those who minister in local parishes. Jean Vianney grew up in the worst days of the French Revolution, that period of time which historians call The Reign of Terror. In Paris, many of the clergy and religious were thrown into jail and killed. Others escaped and went into exile. Many simply left their vocation and took up a secular life. All the churches were boarded up and services were forbidden. It was in this atmosphere that Jean Vianney received his call to priesthood. Of course, he had to study in secret for the seminaries had also been closed. Unfortunately, Jean Vianney was not an especially talented student. In fact, he had no gift for Latin at all, and in those days, everything was taught in Latin. But his superiors had the wisdom to recognize his deep piety, and eventually he was ordained. After that, he was sent to the poorest and most miserable parish in France, a small town called Ars. Because religion had been suppressed for so long, the people had entirely fallen away from the practice of the faith. When Fr. Jean Vianney arrived, he found that they knew nothing at all about their Catholic religion, so he went about visiting his parishioners one by one, encouraging them to return to church and giving catechism lessons in very simple language. The town was so poor that Jean Vianney had virtually nothing to live on. It is said that he existed on potatoes for six years. And yet, his holiness caught on, and bit-by-bit, people began coming to him. He became famous as a confessor and a healer. It seems extraordinary, but his reputation spread so widely that people began to come from all over, 300 visitors a day. He established a routine of preaching at 11:00 a.m. after which he would began to receive people in the confessional, often spending as many as twelve hours a day counseling and consoling his penitents. When the dark days of the Revolution had passed and Napoleon allowed the religious orders and priests to return, the government gave a Medal of Honor to Jean Vianney, but he immediately sold the honorary robes and the medal and used the money to establish an orphanage. He died, worn out by his labors, on August 4th in 1859. Pope Pius XI canonized him in 1925, and on the centennial of his death in 1959 Pope John XXIII wrote an encyclical called “The Foundation of our Priesthood” extolling Jean Vianney as a model of service for all priests. In a little catechism he prepared, Jean Vianney wrote: “It is the duty of God’s children to pray and to love, and that’s where our happiness will be found. Prayer is union with God. Through sincere prayer, we receive a taste of the heaven to come, and we prepare ourselves to dwell there forever.” Fr. Ulysses

Religious Education Program We will be registering for our First Communion and Confirmation programs all the Sundays of August on the porch of the church. Registration will also take place in the Parish Center -Tuesday to Friday from 9:30a.m to 5:00p.m. (except lunch time). To register your child in the program you need to bring a completed registration form, photocopy of your child’s Baptism Certificate, and the registration and materials fee. GOOD GRIEF MINISTRY The loss of every loved one creates many changes, challenges and pain. “Good Grief”, an ongoing support group, meets every Thursday at the Parish Center, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. We care. We share. Do come.

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY If someone in your family is homebound, lives nearby and is unable to attend Mass, but would like to received the Eucharist, please contact Julie O’Leary at (650) 361-8681. Communion ministers are needed to bring the Eucharist to homebound parishioners. Please call Julie O’Leary if you would like to participate in this worthy ministry.
