Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

On Thursday of this week, we will celebrate the memorial of the youngest person ever to have been canonized a saint, Maria Goretti. Maria was born into a family of peasant farmers in Italy in October of 1890. Eventually, her father lost his own farm and was forced to become a tenant farmer, sharing a residence with a widower and his son, Alessandro Serenelli, who also worked the land. The conditions were very poor and the farm unfavorable and marshy. When Maria was only nine years old, her father was bitten by a mosquito and died soon after of malaria. As a consequence, the Goretti family fell into into even deeper poverty. Maria’s mother went out to replace her husband on the land while Maria was obliged to tend the house, cook and watch the other children. One day Maria, who was only eleven years old at the time, was mending clothes in the kitchen. Alessandro Serenelli, then 20, returned to the house and began to make sexual advances toward Maria. He became more and more aggressive as she fought him off. Angry at being rebuffed, he repeated stabbed Maria repeatedly with a knife. Maria died of her wounds the next day, July 6, 1902, but not before forgiving her attacker, as she said, “For the love of Jesus.” The conclusion to the story of Maria Goretti is extraordinary. The young man who, of course, was known to everyone in the area was arrested and sent to prison for many years. Unrepentant, he one day had a dream in which Maria gave him some lilies which burnt in his hands. He called for a priest, confessed and took up a life of prayers. Once he was released from prison, he sought out Maria’s mother. He begged her forgiveness and he emotionally expressed to her his great sorrow for the terrible sin he had committed in his youth. Maria’s mother, knowing that her daughter had forgiven him, felt she could do nothing less. Amazingly, the man lived to see Maria Goretti beatified in 1947, and he was invited to be present at her canonization to sainthood in June of 1950. The Mass celebrated by Pope Pius XII attracted over 500,000 people, mostly youth. So vast were the crowds that Maria’s canonization became to the first to be celebrated outdoors in St. Peter’s Square. Maria Goretti, truly exemplifies the fortitude and the blessedness that comes to those who hold fast to virtue, to chastity, and to principles of right-living, and most especially forgiveness. Like Jesus himself, Maria remained loving and charitable, even to the one who had harmed her. Such saints show us that our real strength is in faithfulness to God, and that the reward of goodness, though not always visible here on earth, is an assured place among the blessed in God’s heavenly kingdom. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION

Parish Facilities This collection helps us to maintain our church and other parish facilities in good condition, to do the repairs and upgrades that are needed, and to cover the gardening needs of the Parish.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Doctrine of Purgatory The Patroness of this parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, while more commonly associated with the sacramental called the Brown Scapular, also has a traditional association with the doctrine of Purgatory. Purgatory was often, in Medieval Church iconography, depicted as a place of flames and torment where souls, denied the bliss of heaven, suffered for the sins of their earthly lives. Indeed, it was not uncommon to find statues of Our Lady of Mount Carmel hovering above these flames as the poor souls in Purgatory appealed to her mercy. This image and this idea has more recently been rejected by the Church. More correctly, the Church holds that Purgatory is a sort of intermediate state in which souls, encumbered by the less than mortal sins of their lives, undergo a sort of purification and period of repentance before being admitted to the heavenly kingdom. Rather than a place of torment, Purgatory is a generally necessary stage since most of us die not entirely unstained by venial sin. So we will no longer find images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel pulling souls from the flames, but we should still consider her, and the wearing of her Scapular, as helps along our road to salvation.
