Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

In the Gospel reading this Sunday, as he walks along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus calls his first disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John. These four, and the other eight men mentioned by name in the Gospels, became part of Jesus’ closest inner circle. Jesus, who gathered hundreds of followers in his lifetime, needed a special group of disciples to help in his ministry and to carry on his message after his death. He commissioned these chosen ones by a ‘laying on of hands’ so that they would be empowered to bless, to cure and to preach in his name. These disciples were also given a unique name – Apostles. The word Apostle means ‘one who is sent out,’ especially one who is sent on a mission. This week might be called the week of Apostles because we’ll also be celebrating the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, as well as the Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, all of whom are known as apostles. St. Paul had never personally known Jesus; in fact he had been a great persecutor of Christians. But after his dramatic conversion, Paul was so filled with the spirit of the Risen Christ that he became the most significant missionary of the early Church. He established Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire, and worked tirelessly until his martyrdom to spread the message of salvation. Some of Saint Paul’s followers became important Apostles themselves, among them St. Timothy and St. Titus. We know from St. Paul’s Letters that St. Timothy was a Jewish Christian who had been converted by Paul along with Timothy’s mother and grandmother. He became the head of the Church in Ephesus. Titus, on the other hand, was a Greek pagan before his conversion to Christ. Paul trusted Titus to help him reconcile the many conflicts and differences that developed among the early Christian communities. For all of us, this is not meant to be just a history lesson but rather an inspiration to carry on Christ’s Apostolic mission today, It is urgent that we continue to proclaim the Good News of Christ as the end of time draws nearer. Jesus said, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” To be a laborer for Christ does not mean that we must have a special college diploma or that we need to join a religious order or wear a clerical collar. It only means that each day we should pray, ‘Lord, I am here at your disposal; show me what you want me to do; let me be your hands, your feet, and your voice among my family, friends and community.’ Then, as Christ’s instruments, we can help to gather in that harvest of souls who yearn (often without knowing it) for the joy and hope we gain when we are part of God’s holy people.

San Pablo nunca había conocido a Jesús. DearCommunity: While I will try in the next week to reply personally to all the many people who wrote Christmas cards to me, who sent me checks or gift cards or who handed me bags with candy or cookies or other kind presents – some with names and addresses, others anonymous -- I don’t want to let even another week go by without expressing my profound gratitude to all of you. I treasure with all my heart this vocation of priesthood that God has given me, and the opportunity to serve in a parish such as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is a great deal of work, to be honest, particularly in these days when the shortage of priests means we have to take on more will less help than in the past. But the love I have felt from so many of my parishioners makes it all worthwhile in every way. May all who read this know of my love and concern for you, the people I’m privileged to serve, and may God bless us all in this coming year and give us peace. Fr. Ulysses
