Dear Parishioners, Come, Lord Jesus! That is our simple prayer that is in our hearts this Advent season, but it is a powerful prayer. With this prayer, we are saying that we have faith in Christ’s promise that he will return and usher in his Kingdom; we are saying we acknowledge Christ as our king, and desire his return; we are saying that we are ready for him to judge the living and the dead. That is what we pray when we say during the Our Father, “Thy kingdom come.” That is what we look forward to during the season of Advent. Are we ready to say that? Imagine for a moment that we woke up one morning, and we were told with absolute certainty that Jesus was coming tonight. Would we be filled with joy and say we’re ready, or would we panic and rush to apologize to those whom we’d sinned against, find a food shelf or homeless shelter we could support, and scramble to find a time we could go to confession? If we’re in the latter group, then it’s time to get ready. We may have more than a day to do all the things we need to do, but then again, we may not. We have scheduled extra times for confession before our weekly Masses, Tuesday through Friday, penance services with many priests on Tuesday, December 13 at 10:00am at St. Joseph campus and 7:00pm at St. John campus, and we have our normal confessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Now is the time to put our relationships in order, with each other and with God, so we can say: Come, Lord Jesus! Fr. Liekhus
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration—Our Need Is Urgent! Is Christ calling you? In order to have Perpetual Adoration, our parish needs all hours covered. The Chapel depends on all of us and our commitment to pray one hour with Jesus.

Parish News First Sunday of Advent (November 27, 2016)
Isaiah 2:1-5, Letter of St. Paul to the Romans 13:11-14, Matthew 24:37-44 Are you ready for Christmas? Today's gospel and Paul's letter to the Romans both speak about preparing for the coming of the Lord. But it is not about the coming of baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It is about the second coming of the Lord at the end of time. Indeed, Christmas would have no meaning for us if it were not for the promise of this second coming. These two events are very different. One important difference is that we know when Christmas will come. It will be December 25. We also know pretty much how it will go. Many of us have already made holiday travel plans or decided how we will decorate our house. We really “own” this holiday. It is mostly under our control. Not so with the Lord's return! In today's gospel, Jesus makes it sound a little scary. It will happen without warning – like a thief in the night. And it will be a violent disruption in our lives, with some of us “taken” and some of us “left behind”. He compares it to the coming of the flood in the days of Noah. How different this is from the image of a baby who comes with very little fanfare and causes hardly a ripple in the events of the day.
Paul's letter gives some very specific advice on how we should prepare. He mentioned vices that should be avoided and virtues that should be cultivated. And even though Paul spoke of the Lord's return as imminent, he still suggested these permanent lifestyle changes, which is consistent with an indefinite period of readiness. The first reading from Isaiah has a less frightening image of the coming of Lord. It is not so much about the Lord's coming as a sudden event. It’s more about the fruits of His return. This is where we hear that famous saying about beating swords into plowshares and the end of war. Rather than being taken unawares, this reading talks about “many peoples” willingly turning to the Lord and submitting to his instruction. This should make us all hopeful, especially in these days when, for many, hope seems to be in such short supply. For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949. Reflection Questions: Do you find it hard to “stay awake” and ready for the Lord's coming? What steps should I be taking to bring about “swords into plowshares” and “spears into pruning hooks”?
Families Moving Forward updates. St Gabriel’s will be hosting FMF three weeks in 2017: April 2-9 (Lent), June 25-July 2 and October 8-15, 2017. When considering a Service Ministry to support, please prayerfully consider FMF. We here at St Gabriel’s have a solid FMF leadership team and have developed a core of regulars. We do have one key position to fill on the leadership team: the couple responsible for recruiting and scheduling families with children to come and have supper with the guest families and then play with the children until 8:00pm. The important requirement for this position is that you are a couple with children that know other couples with children. If you would like to learn more about this position, contact me: email,
[email protected] or phone (952) 935 8530. God Bless, Deacon Francis

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
