Monitoring EU Agri-Food Trade: Development until January 2017

January 2017 – EU agri-food exports start at high level into the new year The monthly value of EU agri-food exports in January 2017 reached a level of EUR 10.3 billion, which is almost EUR 1 billion higher than in January 2016. Highest increases in monthly export values (January 2017 compared to January 2016) were recorded for the USA (EUR +206 million) and China (EUR +120 million). Remarkably, EU agrifood exports to Russia recovered in January by EUR 116 million year on year, and also exports to Japan, Korea, South Africa and Switzerland increased significantly. Export values went down in particular to Egypt (EUR -56 million), Iran (EUR -52 million), Morocco, and Ethiopia.

The highest increases in monthly export values compared to the previous year were achieved for wine (EUR +127 million), pork (EUR +112 million) and spirits and liqueurs (EUR +83 million). On the other hand, monthly export values in January 2017 compared to January 2016 went down in particular for wheat. In January 2017, agri-food imports to the EU increase to a value of EUR 10.2 billion from EUR 9.4 billion in January 2016. The highest increase in monthly import values was from Argentina and Indonesia, followed by Ukraine. Imports from the USA went down most.

USA remains most important destination for EU agri-food exports

EU trade surplus in agri-food at EUR 19 billion over 12 months

For the 12-months period February 2016 to January 2017, EU agri-food exports reached a value of EUR 132 billion, corresponding to an increase by 2.2% in value terms compared to the same period one year ago.

Agri-food imports from third countries in the 12months period February 2016 to January 2017 came into the EU at a value of EUR 113 billion, i.e. a decrease by 0.7% compared to the same period one year ago. The export surplus for the 12-months period thus increased to more than EUR 19 billion.

Major gains were achieved in values of agri-food exports to the USA (EUR + 1.4 billion; +7%) and China (EUR +1.0 billion; +10%), although exports to Hong Kong went down significantly. Increases were also recorded in agri-food exports to Japan (EUR +0.5 billion; +9%), Korea (EUR +346 million; +15%) and Switzerland (EUR +298 million; +4%). Exports to Israel and Australia, each increased by more than EUR 200 million in the twelve-month period, and exports to Norway, Morocco and India increased by 150 million. EU agri-food exports to Russia slowly recovered, from EUR 5.5 billion (Feb 2015 to Jan 2016) to EUR 5.7 billion (Feb 2016 to Jan 2017), i.e. an increase in values by 3.6%. Thus, Russia remains on rank number 5 of EU export destinations for agri-food products, behind the USA, China, Switzerland and Japan. On the year-on-year basis, export values reduced importantly to destinations such as Hong Kong (EUR – 0.7 billion), Egypt (EUR -0.5 billion) and Saudi Arabia (EUR -0.3 billion). Analysing the EU export performance per product category over the last twelve months, export values reflect in particular the recovery in pig meat exports (EUR +1.3 billion; +34% compared to export values in the 12-months period one year ago), meat offal, other meat and fat (EUR +0.6 billion; +24%), wine (EUR +421 million; +4%), olive oil (EUR +414 million; +18%), and infant food (EUR +400 million; +6%). Similar to the development recorded for previous periods, raw hides and skins (EUR -1 billion; -39%) as well as wheat (EUR -0.9 billion; -15%), other cereals (EUR -1.0 billion; -36%) and milk powders (EUR -554 million; -13%) lost most in export values over the last 12 months.

(extraction date for statistics: 22/01/2017)

On the year-on-year basis, the value of agri-food imports from Ivory Coast increased most (EUR +428 million, +13%), followed by import values from Argentina (EUR +346 million; +6%) and Peru (EUR +280 million; +14.5%) and to a smaller extend by Vietnam, Costa Rica and Madagascar. On the other hand, the value of agri-food imports from Brazil decreased by almost EUR 1.4 billion (-10%) and imports from other important suppliers, the USA, Turkey, Tunisia, India and Malaysia went down compared to the previous 12 months period. Looking at imports per product category, the highest increase in values over the last 12 months was for cocoa beans (EUR +833 million; +21%). Import values also increased in particular for fresh vegetables (EUR +410 million; 10%), vegetable oils other than palm and olive oil (EUR +342 million; +17%), oilseeds other than soya beans (EUR +288 million; +9%), and citrus fruit (EUR +258 million; +15%). The strongest decrease in import values was registered for oilcakes (EUR -941 million; -11%), followed by olive oil (EUR -367 million; -52%), raw tobacco (EUR -367 million; -14%) and fruit and vegetable preparations (EUR -318 million; -8%).
