¡Felices vacaciones!

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii! Uh...hello? Is that what aloha means? Yes. Hello, aloha! What type of dancing is this? It’s keiki hula. Keiki hula? What’s that? It’s a special type of dancing for children. ‘Keiki’ means child in Hawaiian, and this is a dance school for children. The Hawaiian word for school is ‘halau’. So ‘hula halau’ are hula schools? That’s correct. How old are the children in the hula schools? They’re up to thirteen years old. There are boys and girls in the schools. The boys are ‘kane,’ and the girls are ‘wahine’. The girls have got such colourful costumes. Yes. Our ‘wahine’ wear traditional Hawaiian hula styles. And what is your job? I’m a ‘kumu’. That means ‘teacher’. I teach the dances in groups of all girls or all boys. Here is a chair for you. Stay and watch. Thanks!

I never cook at home! What? You never cook at home! No Owen, I don’t. It’s easy, first you wash the vegetables and cut them up. What do you do next? You put water in the pot. Then the vegetables go in the water and we put the pot on the fire. Now you know how to cook, Callum. Is it ready yet? I think so. Let’s try some. Ouch! It’s hot. But tasty... Mmmm...

Hello? Hi, Julie! It’s Gavin speaking. What’s new? Not much. It’s very boring at home. So why don’t you go skiing? Are you crazy? Its 25o C outside. There isn’t any snow here. Oops, I forgot. It’s summer there. Come to Coronet Peak. There’s a lot of snow here. I don’t understand... You see...New Zeland is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons aren’t at the same time as in England. January is a summer month for us and July is in the middle of winter. What happens at Coronet Peak during the rest of the year? Spring begins around September and the ski resort closes for the New Zealand summer. Then at the end of autumn, around May, it starts to snow and the new skiing season begins. Wow! It really is an upside-down world summer in January...winter in July!

I’m sure you can feel it’s wet down here and very hot. Man: Excuse me, please can you tell me - how old is the mine? Guide: Men found gold here over 120 years ago and the mine opened in the year 1887. Man: How big was Johannesburg then? Guide: Johannesburg wasn’t here at all. There was nothing here. First the mine opened and then people came to live here. The city of Johannesburg grew around the mine. Man: Is there still gold in the mine? Guide: No. The mine closed in 1971. Now where was I?...

Can you tell me who some of these people are? Well, the lady with the big red hat is Countess Ludmilla. Do you mean the one next to the man in the big blue hat? No, that’s Bonnie Burlington. Oh - I see Bonnie’s talking to Lord Daveshaw. Fancy that! So which one is Countess Ludmilla? Ludmilla - over there - she’s the shortest lady in the crowd. Ah, I see her now. She’s with Annie Archer. Ooh, she’s wearing a red hat and she’s got red hair. I think it looks awful! Why is she wearing it? Well, red is the most fashionable colour this season. Oh, I see... Who’s the other man - the older one? That’s Earl Edgar Strut - he’s very rich. He owns many of the horses here. How interesting. Let’s talk later - the race is beginning now.

So put the money in here. But I haven’t got one pound twenty exactly. What shall I do? This machine gives change. You can put in two pounds and get the 80 pence back. Alright, one pound, two pounds. Now what? Now press on the name of the station you want to go to. Let’s see – Piccadilly Circus – Russell Square ... Here it is. South Kensington. Now, where’s my ticket? At the bottom of the machine. And my 80p change? There you are! Well, thanks for helping me. You’re welcome. Bye! Bye!

Listening CD Script Many people think that Stonehenge was a temple of the Druids. Who are the Druids? Are they people with special powers? No. Druids are ordinary people like you and me. Most of them work in ordinary jobs during the year. They are teachers, shopkeepers or office workers. Druids have got families. They live in ordinary houses and wear ordinary clothes. They only wear their special white tunics when they go to a Druid meeting or ceremony. Few people know that the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was a Druid. Like many Druids, he knew a lot about science, astronomy and old traditions. The most sacred place to Druids is Stonehenge, and their most important ceremony of the year is on midsummer’s day.

I’ve got a great story, everybody. Listen to this! One summer day an old man was sitting in his garden. He was sitting at a table, under his favourite tree. The man was very hungry. His wife was in the kitchen making dinner. Suddenly, a big fish fell onto the table. “It’s a present from God!” the man shouted. The man’s wife heard him shouting. She ran outside and saw the fish. “How did that fish get here?” she thought. The man’s wife looked up at the sky and saw a big bird. Then she understood. “The bird caught the fish in the lake near here and flew away with it. As the bird was flying over our garden, it dropped the fish. The fish fell onto the table and now I’m going to cook it for dinner!”
