¡Felices vacaciones!

Good morning. Welcome to our second tour of the streets of New Delhi. Today we are looking at Indian people’s clothes. You can see some Indians are wearing clothes like you or I wear every day, but you can also see people in more traditional clothes. Many men wear dhotis. These are simple trousers. The dhotis are large and loose. Now look at that woman, she’s wearing a beautiful sari. Saris are long dresses and are usually very colourful. If you look at the other woman’s forehead, you will see her kumkum. The kumkum is a round, red dot in the middle of her forehead. Clothes in India are usually light and comfortable because the weather is so hot.

A Dear Kate, The weather in India is very hot, but I’m having a great time. The streets are always busy and the traffic moves very slowly. There are cows everywhere! (Imagine cows on our city streets!) Right now I’m waiting patiently to go into the beautiful Taj Mahal. There is a rickshaw shop nearby. I want to buy a sari. I hope to bring a few home as gifts. Hi guys. What’s up? This place is so scary! We don’t think so. It’s such fun. I love the loud noises and the strange smells. I don’t! I can’t breathe in here and there are so many frightening things. Yeah! While we were looking at the judge, a man came up behind us and really gave us a fright. We turned around and there was Jack the Ripper. Well, I don’t know why you were so afraid, he’s just an actor. That’s true. But also there is so much blood everywhere. I can’t believe they used to execute people in the centre of town. Yes, that’s awful. Life was terrible in those times. Let’s not waste time talking. OK, let’s go on that ride to Traitor’s Gate.

Hello David. Congratulations! I believe that you won the Iceland Marathon last Sunday. Thank you. Actually, that was the third Iceland Marathon that I have won. I love coming here. Why? What else do you do here? I always go to my favourite fish restaurant. The fish in Iceland is delicious. Also, there are really great nightclubs. I haven’t been this time yet, but last year I had a brilliant time. Wow, I’ll have to go dancing, too. What about the nature trails? Have you been on any of them? Sure! Yesterday I went on an exciting jeep trip. It was unbelievable! And the day before that my friends and I went climbing in the mountains. That’s great! I have never been mountain climbing. What else have you done here? I have cycled around the island a number of times. It can be very difficult as the land is quite rough at times. Did you really cycle all around the island? I’m not surprised you won the marathon. I wish you good luck with any future races. Thank you very much.

Hi Annie, what are you thinking about? Hi, I’m thinking about the summer holiday next month. So what are you going to do? Well, if I had enough money, I would go on my own to an island somewhere, far away from everything and everybody. That’s boring. If I had money, I would travel around Europe, from city to city, the whole summer. Well, you’d be so busy, you wouldn’t have time to have a rest. I would take a boat and sail around until I found the island of my dreams. And if I’m lucky, I’ll land on an island with buried treasure. Well, let me know if you find the buried treasure, I’ll leave my busy holiday in the city and join you there as soon as possible.

Good evening and welcome! Here we are at the Bat Caves, the summer home to thousands of bats. Every evening they all fly out together into the sunset and every morning they return home. As they fly out, they turn and dive very fast. Even the baby bats, born in the early summer, fly along. It’s a fantastic sight and sound. You will be happy you stayed to watch. Where are all these bats going? Well, they are going out for their dinner, and you can be sure they’ll find lots of juicy insects to eat near areas of water. The bats always feed at night and return to sleep in the caves during the day. In the winter months, these bats leave these caves, but they always return the following summer. Look, the sun is setting and the bats are going to come out of their caves any minute now. Are you ready? Look, you can see them coming. Can you hear them too? Isn’t it incredible?

Hi Kimberly! Are you pleased you were chosen to go on the Ruta Quetzal expedition? Oh yes! I am having the most amazing time. How have you managed with all the Spanish-speaking people? Well it wasn’t a problem as Spanish has always been my favourite subject and I speak quite well. Obviously my Spanish has improved quite a lot now. Right! What was the highlight of your trip? It’s hard to say, but the fact that we were received by the King and Queen of Spain in Madrid was very special. Which was your favourite country? Peru ... Yes, I think that Peru was my favourite. What did you enjoy there? The archaeological sites. I love history and it was made so interesting by actually seeing those places. Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.

Sports Update brings you another exciting piece of news about Robbie Knievel, the well-known motorcycle stuntman. Last week, Robbie Knievel told a crowd of 400 people and a television audience of almost 20 million that his latest stunt would be his toughest jump. He also told Krysten and Karmen, his two daughters, that he loved them. Krysten sang the national anthem before the crowds. And then he climbed onto his motorcycle and jumped 228 feet in the air over the 1,500-foot deep Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, Robbie’s motorcycle crashed after his famous jump and he was carried to a helicopter and taken to hospital. Just imagine! By helicopter! After the crash he said that he was thankful to be alive. His mechanic told reporters that Robbie hurt himself, but it wasn’t serious. When Robbie left the hospital he said that he had plans for another jump over the Grand Canyon, but he would have to throw the old motorcycle away and do the jump on a new motorcycle.

Welcome to the Muizenberg Surfing Club. Now don’t you all look great in your shiny wet suits! Here, take surfboards and let’s start. I’m a bit afraid of the deep water and the big waves. Don’t be afraid! Firstly, we are going to get used to the boards. We are going to put them in the water and lie on them. Then we are going to practise in very small waves. That sounds boring!!!!! Not at all! It is very important to begin that way. Afterwards we can go into the deeper water. By the end of the day you will all be surfers! Wow, are we going to be in the sea the whole day? What about lunch? I have to have my food ... I could eat right now! Of course – don’t worry – you’ll get lunch and there will be other breaks during the day – with food! Oh come on, let’s get going. Rightyo – grab your boards and let’s go.

A 22 January Today is Sunday so I had a bit of a rest. We got up at 7.30, washed, cleaned our rooms and then had breakfast. After church, we played football for a while before lunch at 12.00. (Lunch, now that’s a joke! I miss the food that my wife used to cook.) I washed my clothes in the afternoon and now I am going to find my friend who is waiting to play dominoes with me. At 8.00 pm, I must be back in my cell.
