From the Desk of Fr. Pat

Desde el Escritorio de P. Pat

On Monday, June 3, our Right to Life Group and some parishioners, accompanied by Fr. Tarcisio, will be traveling to Albany for a Right to Life March protesting New York’s pro abortion law. Although many of us cannot be with them, we accompany them in spirit and support them with our prayers and fasting. Just a couple days ago, someone came to see me at the office asking for some clarification about the Catholic stand on abortion, particularly regarding situations of rape and incest. After we talked for a while, she said to me she knew what I would say, but found she was second guessing herself because of so many contrary voices. She thanked me and then said; “Father, someone needs to tell us clearly what the position of the Church is!” so, taking a cue from her here are a few thoughts. First, I think it is important to remember that abortion is not a “Catholic” issue; it is a human issue. Abortion is wrong not because I am Catholic; it is wrong because I am a human. Instinctively and naturally everyone of us knows it is wrong to take an innocent, defenseless human life. I don’t have the right to kill you because I find you inconvenient to live with. I don’t have the right to kill you because you may be a threat to me. I don’t have the right to kill you because, through no fault of your own, you entered into my life in a way that was unjust or even harmful. All of this may be painful and makes me angry, but it never gives me the right to kill an innocent, defenseless human life. I don’t have to believe in God to know this, I just have to be a human being. My Catholic faith supports what is already written in my human nature. Second, in this discussion today, it is important to remember that even from the point of view of science, we know that from the moment of conception we have the beginnings of human life. In that initial cell, all is present that will develop into a fully formed human being. It is a wonder of nature confirmed by science! In the light of this then, the Church, who does not make the law, but tells us we have to follow the law of our nature which was put there by God who created human nature, teaches: “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person— among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.” (Catechism #2270). We can be clear: abortion, in every circumstance, is always wrong. I do not have the right to kill innocent, defenseless human life. Having said this, there is a final, very important note: the clarity of this teaching does not ever restrict the mercy of God. It is not for us to judge anyone. We need to be clear and know the truth: abortion is wrong. And we need to be clear and know the truth that God’s mercy, love and pardon is greater than any wrong or sin we commit. The Catholic Church always welcomes and is ready to help and support and share God’s mercy and forgiveness! God bless you!

No tengo derecho a matar vidas humanas inocentes e indefensas.

A minha fe defende o que o meu humano me diz.

Called To Be A Catechist

LA PARROQUIA DE SAN JUAN BOSCO LOS INVITA CORDIALMENTE A

Our catechetical formation and Religious Education Program is a journey toward a deeper understanding of our Catholic beliefs and traditions. It is an awareness to accept the faith in which we have been baptized and the effective catechesis (teaching) of God's word. The gospel is passed on person-to-person, not book-to-book. The catechist who passes on the message of the gospel is OUR GIFT. The gospel tells the stories, but the catechist must make them real in the way they interact with the children. Think about accompanying our children and young people on their faith journey! Pray on it! Classes are offered in the afternoon and evening on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Our Special Religious Ed Program meets on Sunday Morning. Please Contact the Religious Ed Office at 914-881-1404.
