MILLER BECOMES HEAD OF ITF SCIENCE & TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT

The ITF announced today, that, effective 1 January 2006, Dr. Stuart Miller, currently Technical Manager, is being promoted to Head of the newly created Science & Technical Department that takes over the management responsibility for the ITF’s Anti-Doping Programme. Miller, a Ph.D. from Manchester Metropolitan University, has worked for the ITF since 2001. ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “This decision was made in part because of the increased activity that will arise due to the agreement made by the ITF in October with the ATP to take over management of drug-testing at ATP-sanctioned events from the start of 2006. When we considered how best to structure the Anti-Doping Department, we felt that Stuart’s scientific and academic background made him the ideal choice. During his tenure, we have noted his achievements that have helped to make the ITF Technical Department and Laboratory the gold standard in this area. He has also contributed through his work with the ITF Technical Commission and Sport Science & Medicine Commission. We expect Stuart’s leadership to help us greatly in the fight against doping in tennis.” Jonathan Harris, currently Administrator of the ITF Anti-Doping Programme, will continue to play a key role in the Department and will also fulfil his other legal and constitutional responsibilities. Ricci Bitti continued: “Jonathan’s expertise and experience in anti-doping is an invaluable asset to the ITF. Stuart and Jonathan will make an outstanding team as we expand our role in the Tennis AntiDoping Programme to include the ATP-sanctioned events.” Jamie Capel-Davies will be promoted to Coordinator in the newly created position of Senior Project Technologist and will take day-to-day responsibility for many of the Technical Centre’s activities, reporting directly to Stuart Miller.

--------------------------------------ITF LAUNCHES TENNIS ANTI-DOPING PROGRAMME WEBSITE The ITF has launched a dedicated ITF Tennis Anti-Doping Programme website. The new site, which expands the ITF’s online family of sites under the ITFtennis.com portal, is available at www.itftennis.com/antidoping. From the start of 2006, the ITF is responsible for the management of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme at all men’s professional events, including ATP-sanctioned tournaments. The ITF will continue to manage the Programme at the Grand Slam events (men and women), Davis Cup and Fed Cup, ITF Men’s and Women’s Circuit tournaments, and at Junior and Wheelchair tennis events under its authority. The new website will be the leading source of information on all aspects of the Programme, including tribunal decisions, statistics, advisories and rules relating to the ITF Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. Documents and forms, such as the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme Wallet Card and Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) forms, are available to download. The site is intended to be a transparent and user-friendly resource for players, media and fans. Visitors are invited to sign up for the ITF Tennis Anti-Doping Programme newsletter, which will communicate advisories, announcements and rule changes. The site is also offered as an educational resource, with information on banned substances and their dangers, nutritional advice and injury prevention tips. The site will expand to include the introduction of an FAQ section. Information on the WTA’s management of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme at its own events will continue to be available at www.wtatour.com.

The twelve day long course which was organised in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) began on December 5th and was conducted by Miguel Crespo, ITF Research Officer, and Machar Reid, ITF Expert. Since the introduction of the ITF Level 2 Course syllabus to Asia in 1998, more than 100 coaches have been certified as Level 2 coaches by their National Association. Sixteen of these coaches, from eight different countries, were selected to further develop their high performance coaching skills. The participants, who included a number of Davis Cup captains, former Davis Cup and Fed Cup players, Technical Directors of Federations and Head Coaches of National Training Centres, were exposed to and assessed regarding their understanding / application of tactics, biomechanics, psychology, physical conditioning, teaching methodology and planning at the elite level. The Rama Garden Hotel afforded the course participants and experts fantastic hospitality to complement an exhausting but rewarding two weeks. Suresh Menon, ITF Development Officer for Asia, who participated in the course said ¨All of the sixteen coaches enjoyed an incredible two weeks. They are among the leading coaches in their countries and the information they have learned will hopefully lead to a blossoming of player development in the region. Again, with the cooperation of Olympic solidarity, the ITF looks forward to holding more Level III courses in more regions in the future.¨

ITF/OS LEVEL 1 Coaching Course, Lautoka, Fiji By Dan O’Connell, ITF Development Officer, Pacific Oceania Over the years, Pacific Oceania has benefited from three Olympic Solidarity Tennis Courses. With this support our coaches have come a long way! In 1983, Louie Kapp (USPTR) conducted a course in PNG. Four coaches attending Louie’s course eventually became President’s of their National Tennis Association. In 1997, Dave Porter (USPTA) conducted a course in Fiji. All coaches share fond memories of Dave’s course. Our teamwork continues to this day as four Pacific Oceania tennis players are currently receiving tennis scholarships at the university where Dave is coaching. During the last week of November, Kawaljeet Singh (ITF) conducted the ITF Level 1 Course at the Dr. Robin Mitchell Tennis Centre. Living in the ITF House allowed coaches to study together in the evenings. Each day, I could see our sixteen coaches, from twelve different nations improving their teaching skills. There is no question in my mind that in the years to come, our coaches will look back at this course as one of the most important events of their coaching careers. Kawaljeet is a friendly, giving person who inspired our coaches. The coaches and I would be delighted if our leader Kawaljeet returned to assist us again. Sincere thanks to Fiji Tennis Association President John Shannon for always helping. I am sure our coaches also want to thank John for the tremendous closing ceremony he provided! This course was an outstanding ITF experience – we all shared another ITF lifelong memory!

Thank you Olympic Solidarity. And special thanks to our teacher Kawaljeet!
