How Does Your Garden Grow? Using math and science and technology, we will plan and plant our Liberty garden. We will use art to design planter signs. We will do experiments in engineering and design a new watering system to keep our garden going. Students will then be able to use the class design to build a rain barrel style watering system for the garden. Session 1: Weed Abatement- What is a weed? We will learn our gardening vocabulary. Students will learn to recognize the difference between a weed and a valued plant The garden will be weeded. Session 2: What to grow? We use the computers to research what plants will grow well in our area. Students will consider what types of plants can be drought tolerant and which beds will be dedicated to which types of plants. We will use math skills to plan out our garden beds and decide which seeds or seedlings we need for planting. Session 3: Planting- Students will follow their design plans to plant the garden. They will also design planter signs for each garden bed. Session 4- Engineering/Art- Students will do an experiment in engineering and build a miniature watering system. We will look at the best designs for our full scale watering system. Students will also work on painting their signs for the garden beds. Session 5- Engineering- Students will use large plastic trashcans and garden hoses to construct a Liberty Water Tower. They will work together to build a system to collect our El Nino rain water and, using gravity, create a sustainable watering system for our garden.
