Gianfranco Foschino

Gianfranco Foschino is a key figure in a new generation of artists from Chile. Foschino sets up a fixed camera (often in a landscape, but also in urban settings) and captures the subtle movements that occur in front of the lens. Filmed from a distance, the scene increases in intensity as the minutes pass by with no sign of the narrative one has come to expect from video. Many of the works are framed and hung flush to the wall, with the cords hidden, further blurring the line between cinema and photography. Foschino received his degree in Cinema Studies at the UNIACC University in Santiago, Chile, in 2008. In 2005, he studied Image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires and later completed an artist residency with the filmmaker and visual artist, Paula Gaitán. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions, including: Unsettled Landscapes, SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico (2014); 14th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice Biennale (2014), which was awarded the Silver Lion Prize; Videosphere: A New Generation at Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2011); 54th Venice Biennale (2011); and Contemporary Art Museum, Santiago, Chile (2010). Foschino currently lives and works in Santiago de Chile.
