The Reason for our Hope

I

have had the privilege of serving you, the people of the Diocese of Phoenix, for over 11 years. I am ever more grateful to God for His call to serve Him and for your patience, forgiveness and prayers. St. Peter writes in his first Epistle, “Always be ready to give…a reason for your hope.” I would like to write of five things which Pope Francis has been teaching us about Jesus; five things that are pivotal for the Church in Arizona; five things that give me reason for hope.

1. Jesus and His disciples serve the poor. I am deeply grateful that we have parishes, religious orders, many lay organizations and other apostolates that provide support for those in need. So many of you witness to Christ’s love through your generous service and your financial support.

2. Followers of Jesus live as though the truth were true. We have been blessed to have had, here in Phoenix, two of the greatest witnesses to the truth of the 20th century: St. John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa. They inspire us to treasure our faith and to make the sacrifices needed to provide education and formation in the faith for our young people and for all who yearn to encounter Jesus.

3. Jesus’ Body, the Church, works for peace and welcomes strangers. In Arizona, we are blessed to welcome refugees and immigrants from all over the world. We defend their dignity, meet basic human needs, and help them preserve family unity. Our Catholic Charities and many of our parishes have played a vital part in this Christian and humanitarian effort.

4. The Church proclaims God’s plan for marriage and family life. So many in our diocese are playing a vital role in providing excellent Marriage Preparation, Natural Family Planning and instruction on the Theology of the Body. Young people, when presented with the truth about human sexuality, respond gratefully to the challenge. When we teach God’s plan for marriage, when married couples live His plan joyfully and faithfully, we are fulfilling a vital mission in the world.

5. Christians are always seeking new and better ways to tell the Good News of Jesus. We are blessed to have had more young men entering the seminary this fall than for many years; we also are seeing a real increase in the number of young women entering consecrated life. What is most important is that we are developing, in our faith formation programs, a healthy awareness that every person has a vocation from God. This Annual Stewardship Report, in numbers and pictures, is our accountability to you on how we have used your gifts in 2014 to accomplish these five things, and so much more. With your support and prayers and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit the future of the Church and the Diocese of Phoenix is bright. That is why I am filled with hope. Sincerely yours in Christ,

+Thomas J. Olmsted Bishop of Phoenix

La Razón de Nuestra Esperanza

H

Serving the Poor / Servir a los Pobres Catholics support and care for those in need through Paz de Cristo, Catholic Charities, Foundation for Senior Living, and other charitable organizations. Each day, those in distress are assisted by rent and utility assistance, food boxes, clothing and prayer. One such example is St. Joseph the Worker’s Mobile Success Unit, which brings resources for job-seeking clients to shelters and other locations. Some 2,500 clients secured employment this year. The mobile unit stops at places like Verde Villas, a new 336-unit affordable housing community. A collaborative effort between Catholic Charities, the Foundation for Senior Living and others, it provides permanent housing to needy families and individuals.

A host of new apps for smartphones debuted, including one for the All Saints Catholic Newman Center that guides students to Mass and confession times, as well as ministries and activities, while a Life Teen conference in June attracted hundreds from around the country to learn how to better share the Gospel. The St. Paul Street Evangelization group began taking the Gospel to the streets of Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, giving out thousands of rosaries and faith-filled pamphlets. Thousands of homebound elderly share in the Holy Mass via TV, radio and YouTube each Sunday. This year saw the launch of the Mass broadcast in Spanish.

Billy Hardiman/CATHOLIC SUN

Living the Truth / Vivir la Verdad It’s impossible to live the truth unless it is first known. Forming Catholics of all ages is a daily effort — through parish religious education, Catholic schools and a growing number of Catholic universities. More than 14,000 students in the 29 Catholic elementary schools, six high schools and seven stand-alone preschools continue to learn the faith through an integrated Catholic curriculum. Another 25,000 youth study the faith through parish religious education programs. Bishop Olmsted ordained three men to the priesthood and eight men to the diaconate. There are 31 men currently studying to become priests! The truth of the faith is even more accessible with the launch of The Catholic Conversation, a new weekly radio program which focuses on helping the community by providing Church teaching in the context of current issues. Listen at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays on 1310 AM. Ambria Hammel/CATHOLIC SUN

Celebrating Marriage and Family Life / Celebrar el Matrimonio y la Vida Familiar

Catholics packed Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral in August to pray for the persecuted Christians of Iraq after ISIS took control of Mosul and surrounding Christian villages. In September, Catholics here joined in prayer with those around the country for holy hours of prayer in reparation for a planned “black mass” in Oklahoma City. Catholic volunteers and staff visited unaccompanied minors fleeing violence and poverty in Latin America, bringing the Gospel message of faith, hope and love to the detention centers where the youths are being held. And through its prison ministry, the Church continues to reach out to thousands of incarcerated men and women throughout the diocese, including those on death row.

Efforts to strengthen and uphold the sanctity of marriage and the family are central to the life of the Church, particularly in the lead up to the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this coming fall. Parish nights for married couples offer childcare, and outreaches such as Catholic Academy for Life Leadership continued to prepare today’s youth to be tomorrow’s leaders. Love, life and family was the focus of a Spanish-language congress hosted by the Office of Family Catechesis in May. Some 800 Catholics received guidance and encouragement on evangelization, marriage preparation, chastity and pro-life efforts. In September, many turned out for Mass and lunch with Bishop Olmsted, who recognized couples celebrating milestone anniversaries.

Message from the CFO Happy New Year! In October the Diocese of Phoenix completed the audit of its financial reports for the Fiscal Year that ended June 30, 2014. We are happy to present a summary of our financial performance here. This financial information is based upon our audited financial statements for the fiscal years ending June 30, 2014 and 2013. For each of these years we received a “clean” audit; that is, our auditors have determined that the statements fairly present our financial position in all material respects. The information presented in this report represents the operating activities of the Diocesan Pastoral Center. These activities include the administrative functions surrounding the Office of the Bishop but also include many efforts of a pastoral, apostolic, educational, or formational nature. They also include several large programs created to meet the operating needs of the parishes, schools, and several other institutions of the Diocese of Phoenix: clergy and employee health insurance, property and liability insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, priest retirement needs, parish and school development needs. These large diocese-wide programs account for more than half of the operating revenues and expenditures of the Diocesan Pastoral Center. At the same time, contributions from the faithful of the Diocese of Phoenix provide the bulk of the funding for our diocesan offices and apostolic activities. We are very grateful for your continued support of our efforts. As Pope Francis wrote in Evangelii Gaudium, “Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: ‘We have always done it this way’. I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.” (Paragraph 33) We here in the Diocesan Pastoral Center make every effort to ensure that we use your gifts effectively and responsibly, continuously rethinking how we might use the resources available to us to best serve those in spiritual and physical need in our Diocese. Again, thank you! And please pray for us that we might be faithful and effective instruments of Our Lord’s design. Humbly, Joseph Anderson Chief Financial Officer
