Six weeks is a very short time to adapt fully to a new culture and learn a new language, but the experience of many students who have gone before you is that it´s a great way to get a head start or perfect the language skills you already possess! You can make a lot of progress in your foreign language skills while you enjoy the direct contact with the culture of our country. We hope your summer course will be an enjoyable learning experience for you, and encourage you to come back for a full school year later on, if you can work it into your academic plans.

However, in the case of deliberate disobedience to any of these rules, the student will receive a letter of reprimand and he or she may be subject to loss of privileges, such as that of going off campus. If the school discipline committee considers the fault to be of extreme gravity or if there is another incident on the student’s part, he or she may be expelled and sent home before finishing his or her program of studies, at his or her own expense and without receiving any kind of refund. The price of the program includes transportation to and from the local airport or train station at the beginning and end of the program, tuition, books, meals, room, bed linen, laundry services, use of bicycles, Email service, day trips and cultural visits. The student only needs to bring money to cover his own personal expenses. However there might be a few optional activities, at an additional cost, that will be specified in the calendar given at the beginning of the course. There is no extra charge to students arriving 2 or 3 days before classes start, nor for those who stay 2 or 3 days after the closing ceremony. Besides these times, however, there is a charge per day per person, for room and board. How can my parents send me money? 6 Bienvenido a la ESDES! Estamos muy contentos de contar contigo en nuestro programa de este verano. Sabemos que será un gran desafío para ti encontrarte repentinamente sumergido en la lengua y la cultura de otro país durante seis semanas. Hemos preparado estas orientaciones para ayudarte a conocer nuestra escuela, adaptarte a la vida aquí y sacar el máximo provecho de esta nueva experiencia educativa. ¿Qué es la ESDES? La Escuela Superior de Español de Sagunto es un departamento universitario del Centro Universitario Adventista de Sagunto (CUAS), que pertenece a la Iglesia Cristiana Adventista del Séptimo Día. Nuestros profesores y todos los miembros del personal ofrecen una educación que abarca los distintos aspectos de la vida: la salud, los conocimientos y la vida espiritual. Nuestro programa de verano está abierto tanto a alumnos de secundaria como a universitarios. Contamos con una buena disposición de tu parte para que se puedan respetar las normas de convivencia necesarias en un Centro Educativo como el nuestro.

We encourage our students to participate in the afternoon and evening activities that have been scheduled for them, and all students should request special permission from the program director before making plans for independent activities during the times of scheduled activities. Normally, during the summer session, there are no overnight campus leaves. Any exceptions must be previously approved by the program director and communicated to the dormitory dean. Other rules: Being that Sagunto is a Christian campus, we expect students to behave according to standards of Christian lifestyle. Students will be fully informed about the rules and regulations during orientation and at the dormitories. SPECIAL DANGERS: You must not cross the highway on foot, use the bicycles after dark nor walk along the offcampus roads alone, especially at night.

Llegadas y Salidas No hay ningún recargo para los alumnos que lleguen 2 ó 3 días antes del comienzo de las clases, ni para los que se queden 2 ó 3 días después del final del curso. Fuera de estos días habrá un recargo por concepto de habitación y comida. ¿Qué clases tomaré? Todas las mañanas tendrás 4 horas de clase: gramática, composición, conversación y cultura, según tu nivel de dominio del idioma. Podrás completar tu formación a través de diversos talleres de música, cocina española, sevillanas, teatro, manualidades, etc. en las actividades de tarde. Se necesita tu presencia ya desde el primer día. Así obtendrás toda la información indispensable para tu orientación.

What disciplinary system is there? When you apply for admission to our summer school program, we understand that you accept the rules that control campus life at our school. We sincerely hope that your own sense of responsibility and Christian principles will suffice.

Animamos a nuestros alumnos a participar en las actividades organizadas para ellos por la tarde y en las veladas, y debéis pedir autorización del director del programa antes de hacer planes para salir del campus durante las actividades programadas. Normalmente, durante el curso de verano, no hay salidas para una sola noche pero sí para fines de semana enteros. Cualquier excepción debe ser autorizada previamente por el director del programa e informada a los preceptores. Otros Reglamentos: Esperamos que nuestros alumnos tengan en todo momento un comportamiento adecuado que se ajuste al estilo de vida cristiano. Durante la orientación y en el internado serán informados de las normas correspondientes. PELIGROS ESPECIALES: No debes cruzar la autopista, utilizar las bicicletas de noche, ni caminar solo fuera del campus, especialmente de noche. ¿Cuál es el sistema de disciplina? Thank you for joining our intensive summer program. We know it will be a big challenge to you to find yourself suddenly and completely submerged in the Spanish language and in a new country for six weeks, so we have prepared these guidelines to help you through this exciting and educational experience. What is Sagunto College ESDES? ESDES is a department of the Centro Universitario Adventista de Sagunto (CUAS) belonging to and run by the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Our teachers are committed Christians, and the program is designed to provide an education that includes the intellectual, physical, and spiritual aspects of life. Our summer program is open to both high school and college students. We expect you to be mature enough to adapt to this situation. And in agreement with these circumstances we hope that you will respect the school regulations in following a Christian lifestyle. Arrivals and Departures There is no extra charge for students who arrive 2 or 3 days before classes begin, or for those who stay 2 or 3 days after the end of summer course. Outside of these days, there will be a fee for room and board. What classes will I take? According to your language level you will be registered to attend 4 hours of classes each morning: grammar, composition, conversation, and Spanish culture. In the afternoon you will be able to attend diverse workshops such as music, Spanish cooking, Sevillanas, theater, crafts, etc. Your attendance is needed from day one. Do not be absent. You will receive all the pertinent information for your orientation.

8 ¿Cómo se forman los grupos de clase? Tras una prueba de nivel que incluye preguntas orales y escritas se te asignará al nivel Inicial (A1), Intermedio (A2) o Avanzado (B1). ¿Qué pasa si me colocan en un nivel equivocado? Durante la primera semana, si un alumno cree que se le ha asignado un nivel equivocado, puede solicitar un nuevo estudio de su situación AL DIRECTOR DEL PROGRAMA. ¿Qué pasa si falto a clase? Se espera de los alumnos que asistan a todas sus clases (a menos que estén enfermos) y que cumplan con las tareas asignadas. Las ausencias no justificadas o trabajos incompletos bajarán la nota final del alumno. Tres retrasos en la misma asignatura se considerarán una ausencia no justificada. ¿Y si no viene el profesor? Se requiere que los alumnos esperen a que llegue el profesor un mínimo de 15 minutos; después, si el profesor no se ha presentado ni ha enviado ningún recado indicando que le esperen, pueden indicarlo en secretaría. ¿Qué créditos me darán? A.

Personal electronics are allowed as long as you use earphones, but no televisions or any type of small appliances are allowed in the dorm rooms. Non-residents of the dormitory are not allowed to enter the rooms of either dormitory without special permission from the corresponding dean. Dress Code: Informal clothing is quite acceptable during the summer course; there may be a bit of cool weather at the beginning of your stay, but most of the time it will be very warm. T-shirts and modest shorts (bermudas) or jeans are acceptable to wear in classes. For Sabbath worship services (both Friday evening and Sabbath morning), students are asked to dress with special care and respect. Boy-girl relationships: A Christian school is a wonderful place to make new friendships, and many of them will last a lifetime. But we ask you to always maintain an attitude of mutual respect in any boy-girl relationships while attending ESDES. Campus leaves: Our younger students (under 18), must request permission from their dormitory dean before leaving campus, and must be accompanied by their monitor or an adult.

Para los alumnos procedentes de los E.E.U.U. o Canadá (a través de A.C.A.): Los alumnos de nivel secundario recibirán una unidad «Carnegie» de crédito en Lengua Española. Recibirán una sola nota que reflejará el trabajo realizado en todas sus asignaturas. Los estudiantes de nivel universitario recibirán una sola nota si están en nivel Inicial (A1-100)o Intermedio (A2-200), o una nota en cada asignatura si están en el nivel avanzado (B1-300). En cualquier caso recibirán un total de 9 créditos trimestrales o 6 créditos semestrales.

Whenever an older student (18 or over) makes plans to leave campus—unless it is for an activity organized by the school—he or she should mention to the dean that he or she is going to be off campus.

20 How are the class groups formed? Se permite el uso de reproductores multimedia siempre que se utilicen auriculares, pero no se permiten ni televisores ni otros aparatos domésticos en las habitaciones. No se permite la entrada de personas ajenas a cada internado en las habitaciones del mismo sin el permiso expreso del preceptor correspondiente. Vestimenta: Es aceptable el uso de ropa informal durante el curso de verano. Se permiten camisetas, pantalón vaquero o bermudas en clase. Para los servicios religiosos del sábado, tanto el viernes por la noche como el sábado por la mañana, se espera que el alumno se vista con especial cuidado y respeto.

Through a placement test that includes oral and written questions that serve as a guide in placing students in one of the following levels: Beginning (A1), Intermediate (A2), or Advanced (B1). What if I get placed at the wrong level? During the first week, any student who feels that they have been placed at the wrong level can request that the director review his/ her situation. What happens if I miss a class? Students are expected to meet all class appointments (unless they are ill) and do the assigned work. Unexcused absences or incomplete assignments will lower the student´s grade. Three tardies will be considered an unexcused absence.

Relaciones entre chicos y chicas: Un colegio cristiano es un lugar fantástico para formar nuevas amistades, y muchas de ellas durarán toda la vida. Pero pedimos que se mantenga siempre una actitud de respeto mutuo. Salidas del campus: Nuestros alumnos más jóvenes (menores de 18 años) deben pedir permiso a su preceptor/a para salir del campus, y deben ir acompañados siempre de su monitor o de un adulto (mayor de 18 años). Siempre que un alumno mayor (18 años o más) haga planes para salir del campus—debe avisar igualmente al preceptor/a.

And if the teacher is absent? Students are required to wait a minimum of 15 minutes; after that, if the teacher has not arrived or sent a message for the students to wait, they should inform the secretary. What kind of credits will I receive?

A.

For students coming from the U.S.A. or Canada (through A.C.A.): High school students will receive one carnegie unit of High School credit in Spanish. They will receive just one composite grade for all of their work. Students who have completed high school will receive a composite grade if they are in beginning (A1-100) or intermédiate (A2-200) level, or a grade in each subject if they are in advanced (B1-300) level. In either case, they will receive a total of 9 qtr hours of credit or 6 semester credits.

A.C.A. students are covered by a U.S. insurance company. ESDES will advance the money needed to momentarily cover any costs incurred because of illness or accident, but you will need to fill out the insurance forms at ESDES as soon as possible, for the school to be reimbursed by your insurance. While a student is traveling (apart from school activities), the school cannot pay for any medical expenses. However, if the student turns in the receipts to A.C.A., A.C.A. will reimburse him or her. Students from the European Community should bring with them a letter from the Social Security Offices of their country in order to be able to receive medical attention in Spain (form E111).

¿Qué visitas culturales realizaremos? Se harán varias visitas culturales como parte del trabajo académico del alumno. Se organizarán visitas a Sagunto, Valencia y Peñíscola, y una gira de cinco días a Castilla. Se asignarán trabajos relacionados con estas actividades y tanto la participación como el trabajo afectarán la nota final del alumno. ¿Qué otras actividades habrá? Habrá salidas a la playa, actividades deportivas, preparación de platos típicos, bailes folklóricos y fiestas populares. ¿Tendré que hablar español todo el tiempo? Las sesiones de orientación serán en español pero con traducción al inglés, para que todos puedan comprender bien. Después, se espera que hagas un sincero esfuerzo por hablar siempre español.

Any other students coming from outside of the European Union and the United States of America should request insurance coverage for accidents and illness from their own insurance company before arriving in Spain. What kind of campus rules are there? Worship attendance: The school is part of the Seventh-day Adventist educational system, and as such one of our goals is to help the student grow spiritually. In view of this goal, we consider it important for the student to attend the worship programs organized by Sagunto College (ESDES) and the church. Morning worships are held during the first five minutes of each class in the first class period; and in the evening after dinner all students on campus will meet together for a time of fellowship, meditation and singing. Our students are expected to attend these services. You will also be expected to attend the Friday evening and Sabbath morning services with the local church family, where you will have the opportunity to reflect on spiritual matters and participate in community worship. Rooms and noise: You are expected to keep your room clean and in order, respect other people and their belongings, and refrain from making noise during rest hours (between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. and between 3 and 5 p.m.).

Los alumnos procedentes de otros países deben traer su propio seguro de enfermedad y accidentes. ¿Cuáles son las normas de convivencia? There will be excursions to Sagunto, Valencia and Peñíscola, and a five-day cultural tour of Castilla that includes Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo. Students will be assigned work related to these trips, and both the participation and the work will affect the final grade.

What other activities will be offered?

Habitaciones y ruidos: Se espera que mantengas tu habitación limpia y ordenada, que respetes a los demás y sus pertenencias y que te abstengas de hacer ruido durante las horas de descanso (entre las 23 h. y las 7 h. y entre las 15 h. y las 17 h.)

Will I be speaking Spanish all the time?

We offer trips to the beach, sports activities, Spanish cooking demonstrations, folkloric dancing lessons, and popular holidays.

The orientation sessions will be given in Spanish but translated into English, so everyone will be sure to understand. After that you will be expected to make a sincere effort to speak Spanish all the time. There will always be teachers and other people who can communicate in English in case you are in a pinch, but you should definitely try your best to use the Spanish you are learning.

ESDES ha organizado un sistema de monitores—jóvenes españoles que pasarán con vosotros desde las13:30 h hasta las 22:30 h seis días a la semana. Serán vuestros amigos, compañeros y ayudantes para garantizar el uso del español. ¿Qué dependencias y servicios hay en el campus?

Fax: Fax messages may be sent to the U.S. from the reception office at an additional cost per page. There is no charge for receiving fax messages. The fax number for the school from the U.S. is 011 (34) 96 265-0166. Internet: Students can access the internet in every dorm room. It is available 24 h/a day (except for technical problems) for students who provide their own computer. We encourage you to bring your laptop, if you owe one.

Nuestro campus se abrió en 1974 y tiene los siguientes servicios: Internados: Hay dos o tres alumnos por habitación. Las señoritas tienen ducha y lavabo en cada habitación; los varones tienen lavabo en la habitación y una zona de duchas en cada planta. El centro provee sábanas, almohadas y mantas, pero no las toallas.

Safe for valuables: In each dormitory, there is a safe where students may deposit their valuables. It is not wise to keep money, airline tickets or other valuables in your room.

Is the water safe to drink? Comedor: Es moderno y espacioso. Se sirven tres comidas lacto-ovo-vegetarianas cada día. Rogamos a los estudiantes que no saquen comida del comedor. Los preceptores cuidarán de la alimentación de cualquier alumno enfermo. Bicicletas: Hay varias bicicletas a disposición de nuestros alumnos para que bajen a Sagunto. Se te dará el reglamento correspondiente. Televisión: En cada internado hay una sala de televisión a disposición de los alumnos donde pueden ver programas informativos o deportivos u otros de interés general. Bocasteria: Hay una pequeña tienda donde puedes comprar algunos artículos de alimentación.

All the campus water comes from a nearby well and has been treated and is technically safe to drink. The water with the most complete treatment is available in the cafeteria and at the fountain near the ESDES building. We recommend that you refill your water jug at that fountain. What happens if I need medical attention while at ESDES? If you feel sick, contact your dormitory dean immediately. A doctor will see you if you wish, and if not, the dean will try to make you comfortable and check on your progress. Class absences will not be excused unless the dean has been informed at once.

Te animamos a que traigas tu portátil, si dispones de uno. Existe también una sala de ordenadores donde el alumno puede conectarse a Internet en un horario más restringido. Caja fuerte: En cada internado, hay una caja fuerte a disposición de los alumnos. Recomendamos que no se guarde dinero ni los billetes de avión en la habitación.

¿Es potable el agua del grifo? Nuestra agua procede de un pozo cercano y ha sido tratada para hacerla técnicamente potable. El agua mejor tratada es la del comedor y la de la fuente junto al edificio de la ESDES. Recomendamos que llenes tu garrafa en esa fuente.

ESDES has organized a system of group tutors—Spanish young adults — who will spend the afternoon and evening with you at least six days a week. They will be your friends, companions, and helpers from 13:30-22:30. What other services are there on campus? Our campus is relatively new (opened in 1974), and has the following services: Dormitories: There are two or three students per room. Ladies have a shower and sink in each room; men have a sink in the room and a shower room on each hall. Sheets, blankets, and pillows are provided by the school, but students must provide their own towels. Cafeteria: The dining room is modern and spacious. Three lacto -ovo-vegetarian meals are served each day. Cafeteria charges are on the flat rate plan: students are asked not to take food out. Dormitory deans organize the provision of food to students who are sick and unable to go to the cafeteria. Suggestions from students are welcome, and may be made through the ESDES office, but students should realize that the menus will be different from what they eat at home and should try to adapt.

¿Qué pasa si necesito atención médica durante mi estancia? Si te encuentras mal, ponte en contacto con el preceptor o la preceptora en seguida. Hará los arreglos necesarios para que te vea el médico si lo deseas, y si no, te atenderá y vigilará tu recuperación.

Bicycles: There are several bicycles available for the use of our students, to get them to Sagunto and back (instead of a 30 minute walk). You will be given full instructions on the conditions of their use. Television: Each dormitory has a television room where students may watch news, sports programs or other programs of general interest. Campus store: There is a small store where food items can be purchased.

14 Librería: En Recepción hay una librería donde podrás adquirir los libros de clase y el material escolar que necesites. Lavandería: La lavandería está situada debajo del internado de casados. Además de las sábanas, puedes llevar tus prendas personales (excepto la ropa interior) si están marcadas adecuadamente con tu nombre, pero no se recomienda enviar artículos delicados. Ambos internados tienen lavadoras donde puedes lavar tu propia ropa. También dispones de espacios previstos para tender la ropa. Además, se dispone de una secadora en cada internado con un coste suplementario. Tienes derecho a una lavadora gratis a la semana. Cambio de Moneda: Podrás cambiar dinero en contabilidad de martes a viernes, a la hora del recreo. Teléfonos: Hay teléfonos con contestadores automáticos en cada habitación para hacer la comunicación más eficaz en el propio Campus y con el exterior. Para llamar fuera del campus, el estudiante debe disponer de un código personal con el que puede acceder al crédito establecido previamente con Administración. También hay una cabina telefónica en cada internado. Cada habitación tiene asignado un número de extensión telefónica. Se te informará del tuyo nada más llegar y podrás recibir llamadas a tu habitación. Tarjetas de Teléfono: Se pueden comprar tarjetas de teléfono en ambos internados y en la Bocastería. Informa a tus familiares y amigos de la diferencia horaria con tu país.

Bookstore: At the front desk office of the administration building, there is a small bookstore where school supplies may be purchased. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Laundry Service: The laundry is situated in the basement of the married students’ apartment building. Besides your bed linens, you may take your personal clothing items (except underwear and socks) to the school laundry if they are clearly marked with your name, but we don´t recommend sending delicate items, because accidents occasionally happen, and the laundry is not responsible for lost/ damaged items. Both dormitories have washing machines where you may do your own wash and there are lines where you can hang your clothes to dry. You are also allowed one free use of the washing machine per week. Currency exchange: The school business office will do currency exchange for you Tuesday through Friday, during the morning break. Telephones: There are phones with answering machines in every dorm room to facilitate communication on and off campus. To make off-campus or long distance calls the student must have an access code which will be established previously with the business office. There is also a phone booth in each dorm. Calling Cards: Long distance calling cards may be purchased in both the men´s and women´s dormitories. Each card offers a specified amount of minutes of calling time for the U.S. Receiving calls: Every room has its own extension number. You will be assigned a phone extension as soon as you arrive, and you will be able to receive calls. Your phone number will be the dorm phone number plus your extension number. Be sure to tell your friends or family about time differences so they will know what time it is here when they call.
