episcopal DAYSCHOOI-
Dear Rising Fifth Grade Parents and Students,
Summer 2019
Fifth grade prides ourselves in being unique and authentic. You'll find that our summer
assignments are in keeping with that reputation. Our goal is for you to continue learning and have fun with more interest based assignments that you can share with us and help us get to know you. We are strong advocates for much-needed downtime, but research shows that up to one month of learning loss can take place during the summer months. To preserve your academic progress and prepare for the upcoming year, please commit to completing the activities and information outlined in this package. Summer Reading
Students are required to read three novels.
1. All fifth grade students are asked to read Turde in Paradise by Jennifer R. Holm. Students will use this novel for discussion and assessment in class when the school year begins.
2. The additional two books are up to the reader's choice but should meet the following criteria:
o Current EDS students will submit theic plan for summer reading prior to school dismissal in May. Together with the 4th grade teachers, Mrs. Boyles will obtain each child's "Wish List" and verify their books' reading levels for students individually. Books in the Middle Grades genre of a strong literar}' value (award winning tides and or authors) are encouraged. o Book #2 should be a newly published book (copyrighted 2018 or later),
o Book#3 is encouraged to be a childhood middle grade favorite of the student's parent from the same stage of life.
3. Students will send Mrs. Boyles 3 postcards-one for each book- over the course of the summer. Postcards are provided from the school and will be sent home in the last week of 4th grade or are available in the school office over the summer. For a video including instructions check out Mrs.
Boyles on YouTube https://vout:u.be/\T'Z/>L-8F\'\^v o To alter a book choice or for students new to EDS,please email Mrs. Boyles prior to
reading by sending an email to
[email protected]. o How to write a Reader Response Postcard for Language Arts—NOT A SUMMARY • Mention the author and tide in your first sentence, introducing me to your book. • State your overall opinion of the book
• Provide reasons for your feelings and opinions, sharing examples and details from the book.
• Suggest someone else or a "type" of person who would like this book.
• The format of what you write should be a letter, including a salutation, body, and conclusion, all directed towards Mrs. Boyles • The postcards will have a space for student artwork. Please provide an alternate cover design or create a detailed character portrait of one of the characters. THESE SHOULD BE PROJECT-LEVEL DRAWINGS UTILIZING YOUR SKILLS OF PERSPECTIVE AND FORM AS LEARNED IN ART CLASSES.
Keyboarding- Skills
Students will receive a designated school chromebook early in the year for work in a near "paperless" classroom setting. Keyboarding skills are critically important to this transition and will reduce frustration and increase time management. Students able to type 40 or more words a minute wiU receive a special treat upon starting school.

Math
All students are expected to have mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts prior to entering 5th grade. If these facts are not truly mastered, the student will be at a disadvantage starting 5th grade.
Choose one of two options for summer practice: 1. Khan Academy: www.khanacaclemy.org:log in with your school google account. Complete 10 hours of practice during the summer weeks. Teacher will be able to see progress. 2. Complete the included practice sheets. If 100% accuracy is reached in the first half of a page, please feel free to move on to another activity. Please bring completed sheets to school by Friday, August 16,2019. Dig Deeper Project
To get you thinking along the Hnes of student-centered project-based learning in 5th grade, we would like to ask you to explore one of the listed projects included in the packet over the summer. We don't give you a lot of detail because we don't want to limit your creativity, and we would love to see what you can do with one of these ideas. You parents can assist you in background information as needed. Look over the project options included in this packet. CHOOSE ONE. Save your work in a way that can be shared with the class upon our return to school in August. We will present these in our first 2 days of class.
Episcopal Day School is committed to fostering a community of lifelong learners whose educational pursuits extend beyond the school day. We are looking forward to our year with you! Sincerely, Fifth Grade Team
Laura Boyles and Jerome Delacruz
5th Grade Summer/Back to School Dig Deeper Project: To be presented Day 1.2. and 3 of school. Options: Choose One: Follow the directions specifically for each project 1. Devise a business plan for something you could make and sell. Use Google Slides for presenting: Who is your target buyer? What would be the production process? What are your production costs? What is your suggested retail price? How would you advertise? Slogan? Logo? Commercial? Are there other details you feel are relevant?
2. Design a family road trip for a 1 week vacation. Indicate routes, accommodations, restaurants, activities and sights to see. Determine gas mileage and costs for the trip. You can create a Google Slide Show or a scrapbook. This can be a real trip or imaginary one.
3. Write a mock letter inviting a student from another country to be an exchange student with your family in Pensacola. Your letter should sell the best things about our town and encourage him or her to take a chance on adventure. Aim for 400-500 words in an organi2ed persuasive style and letter format. It should be typed and saved in your google drive.
4. Choose a popular song and write your own lyrics for it. Keep your theme consistent. Record it using a device. Save to your google drive. Provide the written lyrics for your teachers, with a 150-200 word explanation of what the song means to you. You can even try to teach the listener a science or history topic through the song. Have fun!
5. Plant a garden, large or small. Calculate the cost per pound of your returns. What will you plant? What will you need? Get started. Keep a journal of progress. Keep track of what you harvest(by counting items or weighing them). Divide the total cost of the project by the weight of your produce. 6. Interview someone about his or her job that you'd be interested in. Inquire deeply about his or her trainmg, start up, current position, and things he or she might change. Prepare questions ahead of time, and ask follow up questions throughout the interview for funher explanation. Record video or take notes during your interview. Provide the questions and notes to the teacher, and give a report to your classmates about this person.
7. Record family history from an older family member. Ask him or her to tell you stories. Try not to interrupt and ask them to provide as much detail as possible. Ask about major historical events during his or her lifetime. Ask about generations that preceded your relative (his or her grandparents, etc). Create a video or compile a document that can be used as a family history based on the information you receive. 8. Monitor the cost of gas over the summer at one gas station that you see frequently using Google sheets. Then create a chart of your results on a line graph using google charts and graphs. You can even google how to create the charts and graphs. They have great tutorials, and you can be the expert in the classroom once you've taught yourself something new! Write a 300-400 word article about the use of fossil fuels.
9. Create an original "5 Minute Craft" video for something you know how to do. Be sure to plan ahead before you film and edit it so that it makes sense. You can use a variety of softwares to do this(We use WeVideo in 5th grade, and a free trial is available for students) but whatever program you have access to and are interested in practicing or learning more about is fine. Save the file to your school Google drive.
