SYNOPSIS As we follow a mother (Jennifer Connelly) and her son (Cillian Murphy), we delve into a past marred by an accident that tears them apart.

She will become a renowned artist and healer, and he will grow into his own and a peculiar falconer who bears the marks of a double absence.

In the present, a young journalist (Mélanie Laurent) will bring about an encounter between the two that puts the very meaning of life and art into question, so that we may contemplate the possibility of living life to its fullest, despite the uncertainties littering our paths.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE A mother who abandons her child for the common good; a son who abandons himself and his own ability to feel in order to bear the weight of tragedy; and a woman who abandons her life to follow her one obsession of curing herself. Three characters reveal themselves to us, reflecting on the difficult balance of creating a full life while assuming its fragility and uncertainties. Aloft journeys through the worlds of art and nature to explore the meaning of healing and death as it forces us to confront the immensity of such concepts as love, order, chaos and faith, which at times are impossible to understand through rational thinking alone. Does art heal? Is nature a variable? Aristotle said that humans feel pain when they act against their nature. (Cycles, seasons, renovation and change). In the end, we learn that understanding our own nature is the most difficult task in life and that, perhaps, art can help us by offering the possibility of catharsis and sublimation. Nana Kunning (Jennifer Connelly) explores that concept through her acts, aware that the exploration is not to be found in the piece of art (the object) itself, but in the process of its creation. Aloft forces the viewer into that journey. The same journey that Ivan, her son, (Cillian Murphy) will embark upon to find her. A journey to the infinite, into the absolute whiteness where there is nowhere to hide. A journey back to ourselves. Claudia Llosa.

The film won several accolades at national and international film festivals, including Best Debut Film at the Basque Cinema Awards. In 2004, Ibon and his partner, Angel Durandez, expanded Infinity Films into Arcadia Motion Pictures, and began structuring new private sources of funding, both national and international, for its projects. PRODUCTION IN CANADA The landscape and climate of Canada was embraced by the filmmakers of Aloft.

Aloft was shot

primarily in rural Manitoba and included locations in Stonewall, Marquette, Selkirk and throughout the Interlake region of the province. Many of the film’s stunning sequences were also shot on frozen Lake Winnipeg near Beaconia Beach and Patricia Beach. The City of Winnipeg also appears in the film, with locations such as the Osborne Hotel, known locally as “the Zoo”, and the historic Louise Bridge. "Manitoba was the perfect match for the director's vision," says producer Phyllis Laing. "Our icy cold landscape was the perfect place for this film. Winter has never looked so spectacular. That might be a hard pill to swallow, after a hard winter, but this film shows our winter in such a spectacular way. “ Director Claudia Llosa commented, "It's incredible. It's such a cinematic place," she said. "The people are amazing and everybody's so kind. I felt so welcomed since the very beginning." Preparation for the first day of filming – of the ice road scenes – began in early March, 2012 with the construction of an ice road on vast Lake Winnipeg, and more construction to get the filming equipment and crew on to the icy surface.

On the shoot day, two engineers constantly tested

the thickness of the ice, and calculated the weight of the crew and equipment.

Everyone was

dressed in their hardiest winter gear, facing high winds, low temperatures, and a surface so slippery that metal ice-grippers on boots were a must. Many crew members from Winnipeg were inspired by the enthusiasm of the filmmakers from warmer climes. Llosa, her Spanish production team, and Mexican production designer Eugenio Caballero seemed to revel in the cold, the wind, the snow and the sun.

The only performers

who complained were the trained falcons, who were reluctant to work in high winds and snow. As winter turned to spring and ground started to warm, logistics became even more complicated for the shooting of one of the film’s climactic scenes, where a whirling swing in the woods acts as a transformative experience.

The winter road that was planned for transporting a 10-ton 10

articulating condor turned to sinking mud, and crews laid down seemingly endless sheets of plywood to provide support and traction for the equipment. From a muddy spring thaw, to a frozen, windswept lake, Manitoba played an integral part in realizing the filmmakers’ vision of a journey through seasons, through nature’s cycles, and into primal human emotions – the perfect setting for Claudia’s “ journey to the infinite, into the absolute whiteness where there is nowhere to hide.”
