Office of the Bishop   Brothers and Sisters in Christ,  Today, Pope Francis has released the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (“The  Joy of Love: On Love in the Family”). This rich and inspiring document brings to a  close  the  process  of  consultation,  dialogue  and  discernment  on  matters  of  the  family  that  began  with  Extraordinary  Synod  in  2014  and  extended  through  last  year’s Ordinary Synod on the Family. In that sense, we should all feel a sense of  participation  in  this  process  through  surveys  and  discussions  that  took  place  in  our Diocese during the Synods, at the request of the Vatican.  Amoris  Laetitia  is  an  expansive,  deeply  pastoral  writing  that  warrants  our  time  and study. I encourage you to read the document in its entirety and not rely only  on summaries or second hand interpretations. Read, reflect and pray over what  our Holy Father seeks to teach us through his writing.  By its nature, this Exhortation does not change the dogma of the Catholic Church,  as some may have speculated that it might. Still, it is significant in its call for us to  address  the  complexities  of  family  life  without  judgement,  but  with  compassionate,  pastoral  hearts.  This  tone  is  consistent  with  past  writings,  homilies and speeches of Pope Francis, who urges us to seek out and care for the  marginalized, including those in our own families and faith communities.  I look forward to the continued study and integration of this Exhortation into the  life of our local Church. May your Easter Season continue to be blessed with new  life in the Risen Lord.    In Christ,  Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes

Oficina del Obispo   Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,   Hoy,  El  Papa  Francisco  dio  a  conocer  la  exhortación  apostólica  Amoris  Laetitia  ("La alegría del amor: Sobre el amor en la familia"). Este documento profundo e  inspirador  trae  a  su  fin  el  proceso  de  consulta,  diálogo  y  discernimiento  en  los  asuntos de la familia que se iniciaron con el Sínodo Extraordinario en el 2014 y se  extendió el año pasado en el Sínodo Ordinario sobre la Familia. En ese sentido,  a  todos nos convendría sentirnos partícipes en este proceso a través de encuestas  y debates que tuvieron lugar en nuestra Diócesis durante los Sínodos, a petición  del Vaticano.  Amoris  Laetitia  es  una  escritura  extensa/amplia,  profundamente  pastoral  que  merece nuestro tiempo y estudio. Los animó a leer el documento en su totalidad  y no depender solamente de los resúmenes o interpretaciones de segunda mano  Lean,  reflexionen  y  oren  sobre  lo  que  nuestro  Santo  Padre  busca  enseñarnos  a  través de su escritura.  Por  su  naturaleza,  esta  exhortación  no  cambia  el  dogma  de  la  Iglesia  Católica,  como  algunos  han  especulado  que  podría  hacerlo.  Sin  embargo,  es  significativo  en su llamado a que abordaremos las complejidades de la vida familiar sin juzgar,  pero  con  corazones  compasivos  y  pastorales.  Este  tono  es  consistente  con   escrituras anteriores, homilías y discursos del Papa Francisco, que nos impulsa a  buscar  y  cuidar  de  los  marginados,  incluyendo  aquellos  en  nuestras  propias  familias y comunidades de fe.    Espero  el  estudio  continuo  y  la  integración  de  esta  exhortación  a  la  vida  de  nuestra  Iglesia  local.  Que  su  temporada  de  Pascua  sigua  siendo  bendecida  con  nueva vida en el Señor resucitado.      En Cristo,  Reverendísimo Gerald R. Barnes
