Inglés

Asociación

Español

last night yesterday the day before yesterday

ANOCHE AYER ANTEAYER

last; past last year last week

PASADO/A el AÑO PASADO la SEMANA PASADA

suddenly since; from one time; once two times; twice

DE REPENTE DESDE UNA VEZ DOS VECES

until already; just

HASTA YA

¿Oíste de que le pasó a Julio?

Past tense; tells what happened -ar

-er/ir

yo

-aste

-iste

él/ella/Usted

-ió

nosotros (as)

-amos

-imos

vosotros(as)

-asteis

-isteis

ellos/ellas/Ustedes

-aron

-ieron

notice that the –ar and -ir nosotros form is the same in the preterite as it is in the present.

I eat.

Yo como.

She sings.

Ella canta.

I ate.

Yo comí.

She sang.

Ella cantó.

What about those verbs that end with –car, -gar, or –zar? Don’t they sound weird when you conjugate them in the yo form?

sacar

sacé

No sauce!

To keep that hard “k” (or “g” or “z” sound,) we change the spelling:

-cé

qué

saqué

-gé

gué

jugué

-zé

almorcé

an important spelling change in the preterite

You can’t have 3 vowels in a row, so…. …if you notice 3 vowels in a row….. …change the i to a y! For example:

creí

creímos

creíste

creísteis

creió

creieron

creyó

creyeron

ALSO, because the i is weak, you need an accent on all of the other i’s to break up the diphthong

(this only can occur with –er or –ir verbs in the él/ella/Ud or ellos/ellas/Uds form because their preterite endings already have 2 vowels.)
