Dear parents, students, families and community members, Yesterday evening, District 104 experienced a great loss, and it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Bernabe Tovar, a teacher from Heritage Middle School. Mr. Tovar spent the last 13 years teaching science to our students, and aside from his role as a teacher, Mr. Tovar was a leader outside the classroom. He coached the HMS boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, encouraged parent involvement through the HMS PTO, and the organization of the 8th Grade Leadership Council that brought the opportunity to go skiing to our students. He will be dearly missed by his colleagues, his students, and all who met him. Our students and staff will react in different ways to the death of one within our school community. We all should expect and try to understand that there will be a variety of emotions and responses to what has occurred. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage an open expression of feelings. At the school, we have implemented a plan for responding to this tragic event focused on helping our students and their families get back to learning and everyday activities as soon as possible. We have consulted with experts in field and have followed their recommendations to support our approach. Our teachers and counselors will be receiving information regarding our plans and the guidelines for discussing death and reactions to it. There will be district personnel and other professionals available to students who need attention and support. We will try to maintain as normal a routine and structure as the situation and people allow, and we encourage you to do the same. If you feel that your child or family needs some assistance, please contact us, and we will do everything we can to help you. Estimados padres, estudiantes, familias y miembros de la comunidad, Ayer por la noche, hubo una gran pérdida en el Distrito 104, y es con gran pesar que anunciamos el fallecimiento del Sr. Bernabe Tovar, un maestro de la Escuela Secundaria Heritage. El Sr. Tovar pasó los últimos 13 años enseñando ciencias a nuestros estudiantes, y aparte de su papel como maestro, el Sr. Tovar fue un líder fuera del aula. Entrenó a los equipos de fútbol de niños y niñas de HMS, alentó la participación de los padres a través del PTO de HMS y la organización del Consejo de Liderazgo de 8º Grado que brindó la oportunidad de esquiar a nuestros estudiantes. Sus colegas, sus estudiantes y todos los que lo conocieron lo extrañarán muchísimo. Nuestros estudiantes y el personal de la escuela reaccionarán de diferentes maneras ante la muerte de uno de los miembros de nuestra comunidad. Habra una variedad de reacciones a lo que ha ocurrido. Es importante apoyar y alentar a todos que se expresen sus emociones. En la escuela, hemos implementado un plan para responder a este trágico evento enfocado en ayudar a nuestros estudiantes y sus familias a regresar al horario de clases y a sus actividades diarias tan pronto como sea posible. Hemos consultado con expertos en el tema y hemos seguido sus recomendaciones para respaldar nuestro enfoque. Nuestros maestros y consejeros van a recibir información sobre nuestros planes y las pautas para discutir sobre la muerte y las reacciones a la misma. Habrá personal del distrito y otros profesionales disponibles para los estudiantes que necesiten atención y apoyo. Intentaremos mantener una rutina dadas las circunstancias.
