A Zoning Code establishes the regula ons for development and land use ac vi es in a city. Zoning controls what kind and how much development can occur. Zoning Code regula ons are based on the long-range vision and policies set forth in a city’s General Plan.

A Zoning Code generally consists of a map and text. The map, commonly referred to as the Zoning Map, shows the zoning districts on all proper es in a city. The text describes the types of land use ac vi es and the amount of development allowed in each zoning district.
